Liz Truss is to introduce a draft law that will seek to ban biological males from entering single-sex spaces and prevent children from attempting to change their gender.

Oh dear! I suspect association with Liz Truss will in fact mean loss of support for these proposals.

The former prime minister also wants her draft legislation to prevent under-18s from changing their gender.

Both labour and the conservatives are saying that SSE should be maintained.

If both main parties want single sex spaces, i dont see why its controversial who brings up the opportunity for both parties to clarify what they want?

This is a really good point

Both say ‘we want to protect single sex spaces’ so why does banning biological men differ?

Great point.

The SNP/Green coalition position is clear: x.com/noxyinxxprisons/status/1731970430427165152?s=46&t=WHoOZ_3Kv5G6-FyQuvE0LQ

The new build toilets that ive seen are a row of cubicles with a row of basins on the other wall, or a two rows of cubicles and basins in the middle.

Both designs having no door to the block, so everyone walking passed can see children queuing up for cubicles and washing their hands.

The design is supposedly to reduce bullying that can occur in closed rooms, but it limits the privacy of children.

It's not like that at the schools in our area (yet.) Lots of issues. I guess time will tell to what the solution will be.

I'm so bored with all of these posts saying because it's Liz Truss it's somehow not worthy.

Nothing I have read on this thread would validate this.

Most comments have been that because her repuration is so bad, those who could make a difference, ie MPs, wont listen to her.

Are you sure you are on the right thread?

As far as I can understand it Liz Truss has now formally put forward what is in fact an Ammendment to the Health and Equality Acts today. But no debate was scheduled.

If anyone can understand this Order Paper as I may have misunderstood please do explain. I find it very confusing https://www.parliament.uk/business/news/2023/december-2023/mps-present-private-members-bills-to-parliament-in-opportunity-to-make-their-mark-on-the-law/

All the private members bills for this sessions were due to have their 1st reading yesterday, which is a formality and means very little.
Private members bills are then scheduled to have their 2nd reading (and an actual debate) on Fridays during the parliamentary session. Typically there are 7 Fridays that are put over to this. This means that the first 7 private members bills in the ballot will be listed each on one Friday to be debated first. The others being scheduled for after those debates and will only get their 2nd reading if those bills debated first don't take long to get through. Truss is no 18 so unlikely to reach that stage.

Thanks @jgw1

I did think they were only discussed on fridays, but you have explained how this happens.

Was intrigued when on that section of the Parliament UK web site that they said 16 Private Member's Bills had become law in the past year!

Last year is an outlier. I suspect because there was so little government business there was more time for private members bills to be debated.

She couldn't have suggested this while she was in power, eh?

How many days was it she was "in power"? Which she never really was as the financial markets, rather than any of us, decided her financial plans were unworkable.

Even if it fails, it does mean that it puts the issue forward for public discussion. But do fear that the general public will just go, Liz Truss, must be rubbish.

I mean, its not just her. The Tories could have done something about this well before now. It was their botched legislation that caused this mess in the first place. They are now desperately pretending none of this mess ( or any of the messes) were their fault, and are suddenly going to fix the Gender recognition Act, the immigration system they wanted, levelling up, even though it was their own policy that they have done nothing about etc etc just before they get turfed out when they had a huge majority and 13 years to do it in.

The GRA underpins this whole mess, via Labour

I thought it was 2014, but I see that was an amendment. They still had 13 years to change it if they wanted.

How would you change it? Do you mean repeal?

Floisme · 07/12/2023 17:58

I agree that the current government have left it far too late to sound convincing. But as far as I can see, the original botched legislation is entirely down to the previous Labour administration, and any argument that tries to wriggle out of that is not one I can take seriously.

Absolutely positive I'm on the right thread.

There have been posters on this thread who've invoked a theory that because Putin would agree that females are entire human beings any other woman who thinks the same is wrong.

Anyone who refuses to listen to the truth because the 'wrong person' says it doesn't care about telling lies.

I'll ask again what the fuck is wrong with Starmer that he won't stand up for women?

In a democratic society women should be worthy. Why do the Labour Party think otherwise?

CranfordScones · 15/03/2024 15:50

The second reading of Liz Truss's bill was filibustered by Labour this morning. So it's dead.

Labour MPs basically ran down the clock debating the Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill and the Public Procurement (British Goods and Services) Bill which left no time for anything else.

Just to be clear, there where 32 Private Members Bills on the Order Paper today, and Liz Truss's amendment was third up. Normally that would have a very good chance of being debated. So Parliamentary game playing at its finest. In any other job, people would be held to account for their inefficiency.

Meanwhile these Titans of debating voted themselves an inflation-busting payrise yesterday. That issue didn't attract time-wasting tactics, for some reason...

I heard about the filibustering but hadn't realised it was Labour MPs.

That is really depressing that they should stoop to using the tactics of usually loony tune Tories.

It would have been so easy to let it pass (maybe) and then once it got to proper discussion in the HoC as part of Bill ammendments, Labour could have participated democratically to point out what they thought would or would not work as part of an ammended Bill.

Does anyone have a list of the MPs who talked it out?

OP posts:

On the other thread they are claiming it was just as many Tories as Labour who talked it out.

Kemi Baddenoch tweeted:

Just now Labour MPs prevented debate on a new law to protect children and single sex spaces. Instead they used parliamentary time to discuss ferret name choices. @KeirStarmer
is terrified of debate on safeguarding & his MPs actively work to ignore the concerns of constituents.

Have just checked the list of Private Members Bills scheduled for 22nd and it doesn't seem to be there. And there are so many cant see how any more could be fitted in.

It had been suggested ministers could back Ms Truss’s Bill, with a Government aide saying Ms Badenoch was "very supportive of the aims of Liz's Bill".

Downing Street would not be drawn on whether the Government would back it but reiterated ministers welcomed its sentiment.
