I'm just amazed 1.6k people have it on their watch list!

m.imdb.com/title/tt12637946/

Because it’s stunning and brave…

SinnerBoy · 27/10/2023 04:53

Or perhaps they're stunned after a bump on the head?

dunBle · 27/10/2023 06:59

Well lots of people like rubbernecking at car crashes, don't they?

Datun · 27/10/2023 08:25

Also, Izzard isn't trans in it. They're taking the part of a woman.

Thought that was forbidden???

Startingagainandagain · 27/10/2023 09:01

This is bizarre.

Who exactly do they think will want to watch this?

Eddie Izzards looks nothing like a woman.

I is an interesting idea to change the story and have a female character, but that means an actual woman playing the role.

This is just J and H as a transvestite which is a different story all together.

I have no problem with people transitioning by the way, but it is just ludicrous to expect people to see Izzards as a female actor.

Is the film close to the original plot?

'Jekyll's letter explains he held himself to strict moral standards publicly, but indulged in unstated vices and struggled with shame. He found a way to transform himself [using a serum] and thereby indulge his vices without fear of detection. Jekyll's transformed body, Hyde, was evil, self-indulgent, and uncaring to anyone but himself.'

I know someone who has a Hammer podcast- will ask if they’re covering this.

ArthurbellaScott · 27/10/2023 09:18

Oh, gosh, there are two threads. That's what it was. I thought I was going mad. I've posted on both by mistake. Maybe we should have a naice thread and a BAD thread.

Would that be a Jekyll thread and a Hyde thread?

Yus.

This may be the turkey of the century. I hope so.
And I hope Lindsay Duncan got paid a shed load up front.

Datun · 28/10/2023 08:20

I wonder how many ex comedian women in their 60s would get a film where they play both lead roles.

It doesn't look remotely close to the original plot from the trailer.

It has been ages since I read it but original story is mostly told from the point of view of a lawyer named Utterson who is trying to track down Hyde who is causing chaos in London. Utterson knows Jekyll and doesn't suspect him. You only find out at the end that Jekyll was turning into Hyde in a big plot twist that is obviously slightly spoiled these days because everyone has heard of Jekyll and Hyde. But it's still a great little story - only a bit over 100 pages long and fast-paced. From the look of the trailer, I would recommend an evening spent reading instead.

Sounds like a lot of inexperience behind the camera, from the Times review. Odd as there is a lot riding on it, in terms of reviving the Hammer brand and 'trans' Izzard carrying a film.

As I said on the other thread, I saw nothing wrong with the premise but the execution seemed extremely lacking, even from the trailer.

If I never hear Eddie Izzard, trying to sound arch again, it will be too soon.

ArthurbellaScott · 28/10/2023 10:21

Deborah Ross' Speccy review seems more entertaining than the actual film.

'so basic and plodding that even I, squeamish as I am, was hoping a bludgeoning would happen soon'

How in the fuck is Izzard cast as an actual female?

It’s not as if there aren’t any female actors, is it? 🤦‍♀️

Cosmosforbreakfast · 28/10/2023 15:33

Helena Bonham Carter would have been perfect for that role.

SirChenjins · 28/10/2023 15:55

So many actual women would have been fantastic in that role, but the male entitlement shines bright as always. Men has been invading spaces for centuries and this is just the latest form.

ChishiyaBat · 28/10/2023 16:53

This came up on my youtube feed earlier. Made me think "oh i'm sorry I didn't know trans people didn't have human rights" 🙄 I mean seriously this shit is getting tiring now, what "human" rights don't you have then pal? Oh that's right none because you have all of them you absolute tool!

It's just a tautology.

'Trans people are people!'
