Is that good or bad?

RebelliousCow · 27/07/2023 05:37

Commercial surrogacy is definitely not a good thing.

navithefairy · 27/07/2023 05:59

This is a government that has also prohibited registering of children of same sex parents. Horrific.

I don't necessarily agree with the blanket ban on surrogacy but can almost understand it. This, however, is appalling.

We're not talking about that, we're talking about surrogacy.

This is excellent news for women and children and brings Italy into line with most of the rest of Europe.

You can't see things in isolation through tunnel vision.

This government are not doing good things for Italy or Europe.

There's another thread if you want to discuss that

I understand. I just don't want people to read this thread and think that the Italian government are doing good things. They are terrifying.

YukoandHiro · 27/07/2023 06:28

@ErrolTheDragon who made you the discussion police? I

Pointing to a more relevant thread isn't 'policing', it's trying to be helpful.

merrymelodies · 27/07/2023 06:35

Agreed, these are two very different issues.

PuttingDownRoots · 27/07/2023 06:41

You can do a good thing for the wrong reason. Same sort of thing happening in some of the US States.

Well, good.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 27/07/2023 06:53

This is good news.

Clymene · 27/07/2023 06:54

So banning surrogacy is a good thing if the government is left wing but bad if a government is right wing? Confused

ResisterRex · 27/07/2023 06:54

You can't see things in isolation through tunnel vision.

Agree. It's far better to conflate issues and derail threads. Way more fun!

Back to the OP, this is an interesting turn of events. Presumably there will be appeals to the ECHR and so on, which will be worth watching.

The harms of surrogacy are barely known to the general population, so how far some of that starts to become known will also be interesting to see. It's been glamourised and glossed over for so long, that it'll be quite hard to get facts out. Even the Ukraine situation didn't change much. But let's see.

merrymelodies · 27/07/2023 07:01

I know it's an unpopular opinion on MN but I don't believe that surrogacy is always a bad thing.

Maybe not... but this particular ban is international surrogacy which has increased ethical problems.

Boiledbeetle · 27/07/2023 07:12

Just sticking the screen shot in for posterity.

Looks like Italy have banned surrogacy
Tontostitis · 27/07/2023 07:17

When rich, privileged women start being surrogates for poor deprived women I'll change my mind til then I believe banning surrogacy completely is correct. Carrying and birthing babies can have devastating life long complications for a woman's physical and mental health. No should do it for anyone else.

Florissante · 27/07/2023 07:26

Clymene · 27/07/2023 06:54

Yes.

And I agree with @ErrolTheDragon .

StrawberryAmaretti · 27/07/2023 07:56

Agree with the surrogacy ban, just because people disagree with other decisions the government has made doesn't mean they are all wrong decisions.

NotBadConsidering · 27/07/2023 08:15

The Italian government IS doing good things. For example, it just banned surrogacy and seeking surrogates outside of the country.

It is also doing some bad things.

This is the same as every government ever 🙄.

With all the threads on this forum that discuss left wing/right wing, whether it’s surrogacy, trans or whatever, I genuinely wonder how some people cope in real life being unable to accept realities of differences.

JacquelinePot · 27/07/2023 08:17

Excellent news. Surrogacy is abhorrent.
