Is Mumsnet shutting down GC views? FAO Justine Roberts

Mumsnet, are you aware that GC views are acceptable and are held by the vast majority of people in the UK?

Why are you using the 'not in the spirit of Mumsnet' argument to shut down discussions?

In the thread about a trans co-worker you allowed pro-trans arguments presumably from the US, Australia and Canada to mount up overnight. When GC women here in the UK countered with facts this morning you shut the thread down. I didn't see a single offensive post — unless you've changed policy and now think using the medical term autogynephilia is offensive.

This is not acceptable. Maya Forstater's case established that GC views are worthy of respect and yet you seem to be censoring open debate.

I missed the last few pages, and was very disappointed to find it gone.

Hagosaurus · 27/04/2023 10:24

I was surprised that got deleted too - I was halfway through reading it, and was finding the arguments quite nuanced and interesting. Where GC posters did overstep, there was quite strong pushback from others. There was another thread deleted yesterday, again with no obvious reason. Or did these both get unreasonable towards the end? If so, why not just delete the offending posts?

Norma27 · 27/04/2023 10:24

I was on page 15/20 and it went puff. Also looks like we have been downgraded again from the quick links.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 27/04/2023 10:25

We had a thread deleted yesterday

hetero couple got married

couple of months later the husband decides he should have been a wife

they take their story to the bbc for some reason

short thread on here about the news article, largely sympathetic to wife 1 as it did feel rather like she’d entered into a marriage that’s going to pan out rather differently to how she may have envisioned it

thread dies, couple of weeks later someone claiming to be wife 1 posts on the thread to inform us we’re all mean terfs

a few responses asking why just because she regards her spouse as a woman now everyone else has to as well

thread shut down as not in the spirit

now, I’d say if you give an interview to the BBC about your marriage, a thread on social media where people discuss the interview you gave is 100% to be expected and 100% in the spirit of a social media site

YetAnotherSpartacus · 27/04/2023 10:26

The monitors are active lately.

Pluvia · 27/04/2023 10:26

It got deleted after an overnight onslaught of posts running to more than 10 pages, IIRC, all saying that of course it was fine for a male-sexed person to use the women's loos. Then the GC women of Terf Island woke up, showered, had their breakfasts and started responding in their usual firm and accurate fashion — and suddenly the thread is gone with a 'not in the spirit' announcement.

And surely by posting, wife 1 was indicating she was up for a discussion?

CosyCoffee · 27/04/2023 10:27

Can we petition Elon Musk to buy Mumsnet next.

Ndd135632 · 27/04/2023 10:30

Censorship of women speaking the truth is alive and KICKING

Fuck no

mumsnet Is owned by a woman and that 100% contributes to how great it is

midgemadgemodge · 27/04/2023 10:30

It is quite possible that it wasn't shut down to silence the GC views - it is possible that it would have been shut down much earlier if it had been during the day when the full mod team is around and perhaps the activists have worked it out that you can get away with a lot more overnight ?

Anyway @mnhq for comment

Cailleach1 · 27/04/2023 10:33

I will never understand how the equivalent of flat earthers have managed to get people to censor those not going along with their falsehoods. It is the era of the snake oil salesman.

Helleofabore · 27/04/2023 10:33

Some people are very rattled.

Why else would they continue to stop a Uni showing a film. A film made by feminists. Those hateful women!

Or is it that there has been a couple of very well known male transitioners who have exposed the doubts of established trans people. Even though with JG it is reading between the lines and the inconsistent responses. Contrapoints is an interesting one.

Then there is Rishi. And Eurovision…

I guess there is a bit on that those monitors want to stop being discussed.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 27/04/2023 10:33

Sadly I don't feel we are allowed to be GC on Mumsnet. It seems it's becoming more like Reddit in that sense.

Pluvia · 27/04/2023 10:33

YetAnotherSpartacus · 27/04/2023 10:26

Thank you for confirming my suspicions. When I took a break from MN things had relaxed and we were being permitted to talk openly and use the language that experts in the field use.

Now I'm back and I've already had deletions and now a thread disappear while I'm participating in it. Most of the great GC posters who I used to see posting here seem to have gone. Have there been bannings?

That is why they start their threads around 22.30 UK time. I am always suspicious of those threads.

Hagosaurus · 27/04/2023 10:35

Pluvia, have they gone, or just name changed?

TeaserandtheFirecat · 27/04/2023 10:36

I wanted to ask who or what organisations are pushing for the eradication of women only spaces and indeed, women as a sex class, and why. Can’t be all MRA and the like, surely?

Who gains financially, as I bet money is the driver somehow.

TheClitterati · 27/04/2023 10:37

you can speak the truth on Twitter these days - its very refreshing

MavisMcMinty · 27/04/2023 10:48

Just noticed the link to the feminism threads has been replaced by “Secondary education” in the Talk Topics, had to go to “I’m on” to find the folder.

Jennifer Bilek has done lots of work on who is promoting the trans agenda. Here is a link to her blog and one of many interviews she has done which can be found on YouTube.

There is definitely money behind it. How else could something so obviously anti-reality gain traction across the western world?

Pluvia, have they gone, or just name changed?

You can never know for sure, obviously. My impression in the last couple of weeks has been that there are fewer old hands who have all the info at their fingertips and an increase in people who haven't got much depth of understanding. The latter I understand. I'm told by people younger than me that TikTok and Insta have turned and that there's a major increase in ordinary, non-political, non-feminist straight women openly taking up the fight. Some will end up here and need to learn, as I did thanks to LangCleg et al.

I'm one of the older lesbians on here who's been in this fight for more than a decade. I've been posting here for years under various names. In recent months I've been very involved in on-the-ground activism and haven't had the energy to explain the vast acres of hinterland to newbies.

What I wasn't expecting on my return was to find MN censoring people for saying things they've been allowed to say a hundred times before, or censoring for tone. One of my deletions was for Not in the Spirit, which I assume means 'Be Kind.' I will not be fucking kind to people who are not at all kind to me.

OP have you reported this thread to draw MNHQ’s attention to it?

Pluvia · 27/04/2023 10:52

I have now!

GoFasterKnickers · 27/04/2023 10:58

It's got fuck-all to do with 'truth' and everything to do with how fucking pathetic those debates get.

The debate drifted from the very legitimate 'single sex spaces are to be preserved' into very blatant transphobia in the form of 'I'd avoid Lucy the man-woman'.

Constant lumping of post-op trans people into the same bracket as fetishists is unhelpful and unkind. We de-legitimise the entire argument when idiots appear using coarse, ridiculous language. Whether people like it or not, trans people exist and have a right to exist. Women also have a right to fully single sex spaces, but if people are so anti-trans it becomes bullying, I want no part of that team.

If we want these pages to stay up then a large chunk of MN need to learn to debate without resorting to foaming at the mouth and horrible name-calling or goady jokes so that those of us with a reasonable point to make aren't wasting our time.
