Thank you everyone for your amazing work promoting the petition. It all got quite exciting!

What next?

It will stay open till April 20th and its good to keep getting more people to sign. We will try to get some more press coverage of it.

The main thing now is to write to MPs and encourage them to show interest and for them to write to the Petitions Committee and to Kemi. (257 people have already today!)

We have a webinar planned for the end of March on how we think the Equality Act and the GRA interact and why and how the law needs to be clarified.

Happy to answer questions on here too.

My MP is Kirsten Oswald. 🙄 Will write but it'll be a waste of time.

Never a waste of time. Your letter, or it's existence, will be recorded. Do it!

Pterohag · 09/03/2023 23:18

Fabulous, thank you Maya. I've emailed my MP

In 48 hours the petition went from 86457 to 102 259. That's 15802 signatures in 48 hours. That's 329 signatures an hour which is about what we were going to need each day for the next 40 ish days until the petition closes

sighs very happy sigh.

Night night

That is a very interesting petition map. Scotland is angry, we knew that. But I wasn't expecting the cities. It's not just population because it's /relative/ to population.

Sugarfree23 · 10/03/2023 01:15

Edinburgh is even more angry 😠 than Glasgow.

Boiledbeetle · 10/03/2023 01:34

These petition maps are literally Maps of Anger.

Unsurprisingly after Nicola Sturgeon decided men were women, unless they are rapists, that third well known sex of humans! The people of Scotland got rather hot under the collar.

Scotland is a mass of red on more than one petition.

Make your MPs aware that if they don't sort this out the rest of the country will be as red as Scotland

This really is the end you know.
Where women start to see.
And this all falls apart.

Where the wheels fall off,
and the brakes won't work,
and apples tumble from the cart.

There's at least 1 person
who has signed
in every single place,

where there's an MP,
who has an office,
and a name, and a face.

So if you haven't yet signed the petition you still can

Then click on the link below and let your MP know.

Disappointed by the response in Leeds NW where we have Alex Sobel ( Labour)who thinks there is no problem in putting men in women’s prisons and who has been a supporter of Mermaids. Surprisingly quiet recently in his round robins, despite having written numerous times on the issue of women’s rights.
so glad to see this petition continues to gain support. Well done everyone

Rightsraptor · 10/03/2023 05:00

Alex Sobel appears to be a lost cause, @Ramblingnamechanger. It will be interesting to see how he manages the 180 degree turn when it becomes essential.

Once we've all sent our letters, can we turn our attention to the 'Repeal the GRA' petition, which is languishing somewhere? The GRA is not needed any longer and is being a bloody nuisance.

Hello Maya!

I'll be writing to my MP, I want to know how the previous government position was decided on and at what level. Because this petition had a worrying response too:

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/590123

I think this needs flushing out.

But we need a Westminster Hall debate with a clear aim such as - in this case - a route, date, and named Minister for doing this:

"The Government must exercise its power under s.23 of the Gender Recognition Act to modify the operation of the Equality Act 2010 by specifying the terms sex, male, female, man & woman, in the operation of that law, mean biological sex and not "sex as modified by a Gender Recognition Certificate""

And the timeline needs to be as short as possible. No more fucking about. No risk of slippage to the election.

In addition @MForstater maybe we could aim for each MP to have been emailed?

SerotinaPickeler · 10/03/2023 07:48

Mark Garnier emailed. To be followed up by a letter 👋

PatientZorro · 10/03/2023 08:08

MPs are under no obligation to answer letters or emails- and many will ignore ‘standard text’ emails.

PLEASE PLEASE do personalise your email- start with the sex matters email but make it personal to you- that way you are far more likely to get a response, and your MP is FAR more likely to see your email.

(I do this for a job)

well done everyone!!

Gentlyfallingsnow · 10/03/2023 08:28

@LatteToday does this mean it would be better to email from our email programmes rather than through the form on sexmatters? Thank you.

PaterPower · 10/03/2023 08:45

Signed. My MP’s full on TWAW so possibly a waste of effort, but I’ll email him anyway.

Boiledbeetle · 10/03/2023 08:47

Gentlyfallingsnow · 10/03/2023 08:28

@LatteToday does this mean it would be better to email from our email programmes rather than through the form on sexmatters? Thank you.

I'm going for both. The sex matter form is quick easy and Sex Matters will have some numbers of how many people have used the form which will help them.

But I'm also following up with a proper email that's more personal.

lanadelgrey · 10/03/2023 08:48

Underlining the point of emailing your MP. Labour MPs - not sure if it’s all parties - have a system where they log broad subject area of correspondence as it’s a useful way of taking temperature of the country.
