Thank you everyone for your amazing work promoting the petition. It all got quite exciting!

What next?

It will stay open till April 20th and its good to keep getting more people to sign. We will try to get some more press coverage of it.

The main thing now is to write to MPs and encourage them to show interest and for them to write to the Petitions Committee and to Kemi. (257 people have already today!)

We have a webinar planned for the end of March on how we think the Equality Act and the GRA interact and why and how the law needs to be clarified.

Happy to answer questions on here too.

Thank you and well done 💐
I've emailed my MP and will be very interested to see her reply.

SueVineer · 09/03/2023 20:44

I’ve written to my mp. Well done maya and all at sex matters.

Boomboom22 · 09/03/2023 20:45

Done, takes 2 seconds if you use the link and know your MPs name.

HorribleNecktie · 09/03/2023 20:51

Letter sent! Thank you Maya

Rightsraptor · 09/03/2023 20:53

So good to have got to over 100 000, it really lifted my spirits today, after all the 'let's focus on men' crap yesterday.

Can I just enter a plea to personalise the letter as much as you reasonably can? MPs are known to ignore communications that they suspect to be mass mailshots, and we really need to make this impactful. I'll be writing to my MP, who is Conservative but receptive, tomorrow.

Well done Maya and everyone 👏 👍

Pearmain · 09/03/2023 20:09

Great news! Sorry if this is a stupid question but why does the government response on the petition page say ‘further clarification is not necessary’? How can we make sure they don’t just say the same that again and not even bother to debate it?

Thanks for raising this, @Pearmain
It’s something that’s been worrying me too.

Because the government were talking out their arse when they gave the first response.

ClaphamSouth · 09/03/2023 21:01

Yes, the response was late and when it came it was very disappointing. Clarity is needed, the judgement given by Lady Haldane in December 2022 about the meaning of sex in the Equality Act 2010 shows that https://www.scotcourts.gov.uk/docs/default-source/cos-general-docs/pdf-docs-for-opinions/2022csoh90.pdf?sfvrsn=8eee302c_1. Hopefully we can get them to reconsider.

Boiledbeetle · 09/03/2023 21:01

Sorry half my reply went puff.

Its easy to try to shut down a petition at 10, 000 with a weasly word response.

Not as easy at 100,000. And the more MPs we spam with letters and emails about the fact we want them to do their sodding jobs for once the better.

At some point the politicians have to stop ignoring 51% of the population.

Thanks for the map link, Boiled. I wish I knew who the other 102 people were who signed in my area!

Villagetoraiseachild · 09/03/2023 21:24

I would venture that if you are unfortunate to be in the same constituency as a fragrant/unresponsive MP, then that could be a legitimate cue to write directly to the Petition Committee, explaining this in your letter/ email.

Remember, they are here to serve, not block or ignore.

Ah, that's useful, thank you. As I've an SNP MP who doesn't even respond to emails any more, I shall do this.

MissPollysFitDolly · 09/03/2023 21:30

Congratulations Maya and well done everyone, 100,000+ signatures is amazing. I'll see about emailing my MP tomorrow.

Villagetoraiseachild · 09/03/2023 21:33

@ArabellaScott , that is shocking, I think they are required to respond, even if it's just a generic response.
I'm going to write to mine and/or attend surgery.

Boiledbeetle · 09/03/2023 21:34

And the signatures just keep rising.

Don't let it be in vain.

Please follow through and write to your MP it takes about as much time as it did to sign and confirm your email when you signed the petition. And the link below has done all the work for you.

So, Just one more thing to do and that is to let your MP know

My MP doesn't respond to 'generated' emails at all but he was absolutely brilliant when I contacted him directly. Totally gets it. Tory of course🙄

Nice work Maya and everyone. I will write again to my MP but he's labour and fully embedded in drinking the twaw coolaid. Keeps saying 'it's complicated' and 'we have to agree to disagree'. He's actually a thoroughly decent MP and does a lot for the local community so I'll keep keeping on in the hope he sees sanity.

Annaissleeping · 09/03/2023 21:39

I am over the moon at over 100k signatures. What a huge achievement.
