Thank you everyone for your amazing work promoting the petition. It all got quite exciting!

What next?

It will stay open till April 20th and its good to keep getting more people to sign. We will try to get some more press coverage of it.

The main thing now is to write to MPs and encourage them to show interest and for them to write to the Petitions Committee and to Kemi. (257 people have already today!)

We have a webinar planned for the end of March on how we think the Equality Act and the GRA interact and why and how the law needs to be clarified.

Happy to answer questions on here too.

Thanks for the update Maya! And congratulations to all at Sex Matters team and all those who got the message out.

MassiveWordSalad · 09/03/2023 19:27

It's been a great day, well done Maya and thank you for everything.

I will send a missive to my MP but I'm not holding my breath what with him being labour in a super safe seat.

EpicChaos · 09/03/2023 19:29

Fabulous news that the target was met!
Well done to everyone on this board for publicising the petition and helping the target to be achieved - you all rock!

ArabellaScott · 09/03/2023 19:30

Maya, you're amazing. Thank you.

I've emailed the MP, but am currently trying to work out if it's worth emailing the Petitions Committee direct. The guidance on the gov website seems a bit vague.

bignosebignose · 09/03/2023 19:31

Great news, well done.

Rainbowshit · 09/03/2023 19:31

Fabulous news. Thank you all! Particular thanks to jk Rowling who revived it just at the right time.

Rainbowshit · 09/03/2023 19:33

My MP is Kirsten Oswald. 🙄 Will write but it'll be a waste of time.

Sugarfree23 · 09/03/2023 19:33

Fandabidoze!
Well done getting that across the line 👏

Emmamoo89 · 09/03/2023 19:36

Well done 👏

Foreversearch · 09/03/2023 19:45

👏👏👏

Thank you

HopRockers · 09/03/2023 19:48

Thank you Maya 💐

Have written to my (SNP, TWAW, useless🙈) MP.

Is it worth writing directly to the committee or Kemi ourselves as well?

mrshoho · 09/03/2023 19:50

😊 Thank you Maya and congratulations. My letter has been sent.

ReadtheReviews · 09/03/2023 19:52

Emailed mp. He's a pretty reasonable one. Fingers xd.

JacquelinePot · 09/03/2023 19:55

Excellent news! I'm afraid I've hit a brick wall with my MP. I thought he was getting it but his reply to the email I sent about S35 was appalling - twaw, people should be allowed to self-determine, it's out of order to interfere in Scottish politics.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 09/03/2023 19:58

Have done this. Strange to know how many in my constituency have also signed.

LuciferRising · 09/03/2023 20:01

I've emailed by MP. My husband and daughter will be too.

littlbrowndog · 09/03/2023 20:03

What do we say in our emails to msps and mp ?

Pearmain · 09/03/2023 20:09

Great news! Sorry if this is a stupid question but why does the government response on the petition page say ‘further clarification is not necessary’? How can we make sure they don’t just say the same that again and not even bother to debate it?

NancyDrawed · 09/03/2023 20:11

Thanks for the update Maya, great news that the Sex Matters petition reached the 100,000 target, I shall write to my MP about contacting the petitions committee.

I'd also like to give a special mention to @ScrollingLeaves who seemed to be on every thread I read this year, signposting where your petition could be found for those who might be unaware of its existence and importance.

HopRockers · 09/03/2023 20:12

littlbrowndog · 09/03/2023 20:03

What do we say in our emails to msps and mp ?

If you click Maya's link it's all set out for you - just fill in your details & those of your MP 👍

This is a U.K./Westminster petition so I wasn't planning to write to my MSP .

Dancingdoggo · 09/03/2023 20:13

There is a typo in that letter

’of there being two sexes’

ThisIsMyGCname · 09/03/2023 20:21

Only 410 in Keir’s constituency. I admit to being slightly disappointed.

ResisterRex · 09/03/2023 20:24

Hello Maya!

I'll be writing to my MP, I want to know how the previous government position was decided on and at what level. Because this petition had a worrying response too:

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/590123

I think this needs flushing out.

But we need a Westminster Hall debate with a clear aim such as - in this case - a route, date, and named Minister for doing this:

"The Government must exercise its power under s.23 of the Gender Recognition Act to modify the operation of the Equality Act 2010 by specifying the terms sex, male, female, man & woman, in the operation of that law, mean biological sex and not "sex as modified by a Gender Recognition Certificate""

And the timeline needs to be as short as possible. No more fucking about. No risk of slippage to the election.

Noshowlomo · 09/03/2023 20:39

Fantastic! Thank you

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/03/2023 20:39

My MP is TWAW but I’m wearing him down. I’ll write on the weekend.
