100,000 signatures on the Equality Act - What next

Thank you everyone for your amazing work promoting the petition. It all got quite exciting!

What next?

It will stay open till April 20th and its good to keep getting more people to sign. We will try to get some more press coverage of it.

The main thing now is to write to MPs and encourage them to show interest and for them to write to the Petitions Committee and to Kemi. (257 people have already today!)

We have a webinar planned for the end of March on how we think the Equality Act and the GRA interact and why and how the law needs to be clarified.

Happy to answer questions on here too.

Thanks. Email sent (so glad it was written for me as I am rubbish at writing letters!)

TeaPleaseTa · 09/03/2023 21:46

Done, only 290 of us in my constituency but I think that’s a good enough number for him to take some notice.

floralpants · 09/03/2023 21:48

Well done and thank you

Excellent work by all!

I wrote to my mp on this subject some while ago and haven't even had an acknowledgement of email received, and as I did it through writetothem I don't see how it could have gone astray. LibDem so of course, a mild letter from a constituent asking what his own personal stance on the subject is, weel I can that that's really tough to answerConfused

rioseco · 09/03/2023 22:18

If your MP doesn't acknowledge the email from sex matters he may not have seen it (discarded by office staff) so try a direct email.

Villagetoraiseachild · 09/03/2023 22:25

Thanks @rioseco for that advice.
I have sent a personalized version of the Sex Matters email to my MP and await response.
If there is no response I will write directly.

Twinedpeaks · 09/03/2023 22:28

I know it's efficient but oleas e don't send the stock letter/email if you have the time to personalise it. It gives them a get out of a jail card where they can legitimately issue a stock response, sometimes even straight to their website rather than as a reply to you.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 09/03/2023 22:29

Petition signed and letter sent. My MP is full TWAW so I'm prepared to be firmly put in my place if I get a response at all, just as I was when I wrote to her about abortion rights.

RhymesWithOrange · 09/03/2023 22:32

Just popping in to say massive congratulations @MForstater. I think you are amazing and this petition is genius.

I plan on doing 2. The stock one above so that at least I know if life gets in the way it's done. But when my brain is working tomorrow i plan on actually doing a letter.

Might even ask him if for once he could answer my email without sending me a page of cut and paste waffle on TWAW and how they are so oppressed.

(And whilst I'm whinging I certainly don't want him to once again insist on telling his constituents on official paperwork his sexual orientation as it has fuck all to do with him doing his job or the issues i email him about. I don't say on my emails to him that I shag men, I wish he'd stop effectively doing it in his replies to me.)

And breathe and relax.

CriticalCondition · 09/03/2023 22:43

Just wanted to say congratulations, Maya. It's a great achievement. I know this isn't about legacies and it's a long haul but what you and Sex Matters are doing is making a huge difference. Thank you. Keep on pulling!

NeedToKnow101 · 09/03/2023 22:46

470 signatures in my constituency .. Catherine West is my MP. Last time I wrote to her I got a reply about the 'most marginalised and vulnerable..' but I'll write again

NeedToKnow101 · 09/03/2023 22:49

Yes absolutely amazing and important work Maya and Sex Matters! 👏👏👏👏👏

BTW I've just started a new job in education and my contract states something along the lines of staff have the right to express unpopular beliefs and not be vilified or reprimanded for it

Iizzyb · 09/03/2023 22:57

Thank you Maya Flowers I've sent my MP the letter. Very safe labour seat here (previously Dennis Healey's seat for 37 years) so not holding out any hope at all but I'd be very happy to be surprised Grin

ScrollingLeaves · 09/03/2023 23:04

Thank you Maya.

morningtoncrescent62 · 09/03/2023 23:10

Thanks, Maya. I've sent a personalised version of the Sex Matters letter. My MP's not a TWAW nutter, but he doesn't care about this issue. If I don't hear from him within a week I'll send a separate email.

Arapawa · 09/03/2023 23:12

Congratulations Maya. I've scrolled through the MPs list several times now and can't find mine (not that she's going to be much good tbh) Sarah Olney, but I need to send it.

Would it be possible to, in future, put the MPs name in alpha order so that it's more efficient to find them?

hellsbells99 · 09/03/2023 23:15

Well done
i have emailed my MP
