Idea to solve the toilet/changing room 'problem'

  1. Government consults special interest groups (women, trans, disabled, religious etc.)

  2. Guidance is issued on best practices for designing and building mixed sex, inclusive facilities that work, as best as possible, for all the interest groups. (So you know, that'd likely be wall to floor lockable doors, no steps or narrow spaces, sinks and showers inside the cubicles), cleaners and other staff (or CCTV?) highly visible in shared areas etc etc.)

  3. Organisations when doing refurb or new builds, can choose to (a) implement the guidance, or (b) go for traditional sex-segregated, or (3) gender-segregated facilities depending on their beliefs.

  4. Customers and service users can vote with their feet. (Perhaps there's a register so potential patrons can check in advance what the facilities are like.)

  5. Organisations are allowed to challenge customers who transgress boundaries, and customers who do so should expect to be challenged.

I would assume that publicly run facilities like pools and council buildings etc should go for the mixed sex option, done in line with the guidance.

Can I have your thoughts?

but they still end up smelling and being messy. I'd prefer women's toilets to individual mixed sex cubicles that open on to a hallway.

Have you honestly been in women's toilets that are never smelly or messy? I haven't.

I spent that last 40 years working in old buildings with individual mixed sex toilets, not cubicles a proper room, and they were no messier or smelly than women's toilets.

So if bullying goes on in toilet blocks in schools you think that's OK?

bellinisurge · 25/02/2023 14:46

Just so we are clear. Non-binary is narcissistic bullshit.

My local hospital has self contained toilets, floor to ceiling opening on to a normal corridor. It seems to work. Our local public toilets are all being changed to separate toilets rather than a block with cubicles. The doors automatically unlock and open after a certain time (think its 15 minutes) so people in trouble would be spotted. I prefer them, hate walking into a toilet block particularly at night.

That’ll be LOVELY for people who need more than 15 mins due to I dunno, adjusting medical devices or having a miscarriage or just really bad shits.

Exposed directly to passers by automatic doors as if you are the fucking speedboat prize on an episode of Bullseye.

What the fuck are they thinking?

VoodooQualities · 25/02/2023 14:48

Give over Crypto, there will OBVIOUSLY be a way for someone inside to override the 15 mins timer.

No thanks. Single sex spaces and any interest groups dissatisfied with that can lobby or crowd fund for additional third spaces, just as long as these don't replace or displace any existing facilities. Women are not a special interest group, we are half the human race and I'm tired of being asked to come up with solutions to a problem that's not of our making.

Will there?

Please do point me towards the designs because this sounds like a fucking horrow show waiting to happen.

VoodooQualities · 25/02/2023 14:50

And once again, my idea would make sure that, if there was to be a 15 mins timer, the issue would be raised in the consultation and the right solution would be found.

They take up a lot more space than the tradional toilet set up, though.

Its ok if businesses have the space and money to provide them, but if not, the number if toilets is reduced. That could lead to problems in places like service stations or in theatres in the interval.

Theatres I've been to normally have long queues for women's toilets and no queues for mens. Maybe it would improve things.

Gloucester Services has good toilet facilities and the family toilets are mixed. They have always been immaculate when I've used.

bellinisurge · 25/02/2023 14:50

I don't want to be fucking spotted struggling to wipe my own arse because of MS. If I need help, I'll call for it assuming there is a pull alarm thing.

Blister · 25/02/2023 14:50

Road to hell/good intentions.

This is batshit and still implies that male desire is a female responsibility to fulfill.

EpicChaos · 25/02/2023 14:51

Yeah, about that... No thanks!
I don't see any need whatsoever, to be looking for ways in which to help men inveigle their way into womens spaces!
End of!

VoodooQualities · 25/02/2023 14:32

Right, I am reliably informed: TW and TM can use any toilet they want.

I asked, well what's the point of having two toilets then?

I got a shrug.

Which is why it’s better to let the adults decide.

I've never used a sanisette that had that option in my life.

VoodooQualities · 25/02/2023 14:55

I think this thread has been brilliant so far. There isn't a concensus, that's what I'm seeing, though most are definitely saying I'm batshit and keep things single sex thank you.

Of course, it is for if someone passes out or needs help of some sort. I suppose some people would be happy if you died in there, as long as your the right sex of course.

bellinisurge · 25/02/2023 14:55

If you were observed male at birth, stay the fuck out of women's spaces. Don't care how fragile you are or how much more makeup than me you are wearing.
If you are a transman, you are welcome in women's spaces. I'm afraid because of all the self ID bullshit by men you might get a few raised eyebrows but, as transpeople rarely pass as the gender they identify into, you'll be ok.
Nonbinary is bullshit. Read my first sentence and get the fuck over yourself.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 25/02/2023 14:55

Its a lot of expense and throws up many new problems, just to avoid having spaces where women and only women can be.

Do men really think we are planning a revolution while washing our hands?

Rather than spending this much time and money trying to bend over backwards for men with gender feels, just think what we could achieve for women and girls.

Happylittlechicken · 25/02/2023 14:56

So ok, we have all these gender neutral toilets. Now what? How does this benefit women? What would be even better is sex segregated facilities. As some women for various reasons cannot share spaces With men how does this benefit them?

Tech like this would be far more costly to implement and maintain than just adding an extra third single user space to the existing main male and female provison.

When the electric locks break on a train loo they have to take that loo completely out of service - hence trains having to have an old fashioned kinetic locking loo as well as electric one.

Can’t wait for all the ‘I got stuck inside a council loo when the electrics broke down’ compo face stories in local news papers 🙃

The fire brigade had to get me and DD out of a stick lift once, imagine the indignity of a fire truck full of chaps crowbarring the door open after you’ve done a big 💩

Presumably you could use the disabled facilities. Oh no they aren't single sex are they.

Canyousewcushions · 25/02/2023 14:57

We have a newly built Tim Hortons or two near us with gender neutral loos. All proper rooms so no issue on the privacy front.

However they are utterly rank. Its really horrible to be in an eatery/food place and then go to the toilet and find they stink and the floors are covered in pee. Unless loos are cleaned after every man who goes in, they really need to stay single sex.

My stonewall-arse-licking employer has also converted some loos to gender neutral with full height partitions in the toilet room. Same problem there- I avoid them because guys can't aim and they are just grim.

VoodooQualities · 25/02/2023 14:57

My daughter was the only TRA around to ask. My original point was about young men and women though. Twenty somethings or whatever. There's millions of them, or so it seems from social media. I know a dozen or more personally and I don't seek them out I can assure you.

You unlock them manually within the 15 minutes.

(that was for badbudgeter)

They were designed in line with recommendations at the time; it's a newish building. Toilets that open onto a corridor allow for passive supervision of toilets in schools. Unisex is inclusive etc. I'd personally prefer sinks in the cubicles but having witnessed some childrens propensity for blocking plugs and leaving taps on at central sinks I can understand why they have opted for a central sink that can be covered by cctv.

Problem is some (boys I'm assuming) folk will happily pee all over the seat. So complaints and then they segregate by sex with some laminated signs. I don't think the problem is a bad design so much as some people are disgusting and who have no respect for others. Sadly boys don't necessarily grow out of this even after school so I'd prefer womens facilities where possible.
