I live in Rosie Duffields constituency. Just had local election door knock from labour party

He asked what my main concerns were. I said my main issue was that i stood with Rosie and felt that Labour, as a party, from the top down, did not offer her enough support. And my main concern was womens safe spaces.

Man said, well, this is local elections and not about that, and that issue is more complicated than you think. What are your concerns, locally?

I said the local council is involved in issues to do with womens safe spaces. Like the womens refuges, the womans changing room at the local pool, etc. All spaces where biological men should not have access and that womens safe spaces was my main concern.

There followed a debate. And his stance is that its not that simple, i am being brainwashed by the right wing media, and that Rosie is in fact, (drumroll please...), mainly being supported by American right wing anti abortion groups.

Arrrrrghhhhhh. So that is where my local labour door knockers are at. Saying Rosies main core of support is American right wing anti abortion groups and i am being fooled by them. Silly, foolish, female me.

Well done, OP. Fantastic. Even if the bloke was an idiot, it's good to stand up and say these things out loud!

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 22/02/2023 16:11

God that sounds annoying

well done though OP

KatMcBundleFace · 22/02/2023 16:12

Wow, what a vile man. Actually undermining his own party and mp.
Shame on him.

GCMM · 22/02/2023 16:24

I live in the constituency too. I'm hoping to get a knock on the door by canvassers, so I can say the same! If he actually said that Rosie is mainly being supported by American right wing anti abortion groups, I think you should report that to her office asap.

LizzieSiddal · 22/02/2023 16:28

Was he a candidate? I’d write an email complaining about him. He’s spreading malicious info about his own MP.

Redshoeblueshoe · 22/02/2023 16:33

I don't think they will be knocking on my door -ever again. I bought it up and the woman didn't have a clue what I was talking about. So I explained what TWAW means, and that our MP was fully on board. I asked her if she would be happy to share a hospital ward with a TW, she said no. I said that's exactly what they are advocating.

Sausagenbacon · 22/02/2023 16:37

I so want Labour, or LibDem or Greens to canvas me. They won't know what's hit them

MarkWithaC · 22/02/2023 16:37

We had local elections last year and I talked to the Labour person who came round on voting day 'just to check I was going to vote' about women's rights and spaces (I'm in a pretty safe Labour seat).
Well, tried to talk to her. I started from a genuinely open POV and said I was worried about women's rights under Labour but, as a long-term Labour voter, was in a real dilemma about who to vote for. As soon as I started talking about 'women' her face fell, then hardened, and her body language got dismissive.
She said the same thing: about this being local elections and had I come across these issues in the area. I started to try to say what you said – women's refuges, changing rooms etc – and she got more and more dismissive and then downright aggressive, raising her voice, flapping her hands at me and ultimately walking away from me.
I spoiled my ballot and wrote 'Respect my sex if you want my X' all over it. Never done that before. I find myself politically homeless and it's disconcerting.

In your case, OP, definitely report the American right wing anti-abortion groups thing to her office.

TheBiologyStupid · 22/02/2023 16:38

As PPs have said, you should report this to Rosie's office - it's outrageous that she is being slandered on public doorsteps by Labour Party canvassers in her own constituency.

Helleofabore · 22/02/2023 16:43

Well done OP. But yes, I would definitely report that to Rosie.

That was remarkable that this campaigner felt this was appropriate to say.

lechiffre55 · 22/02/2023 16:46

Don't they wear ID on lanyards around their necks so people know who they are? I would ask to take a close look at the ID, and write their name down.

BadgerWadger · 22/02/2023 16:51

How do i report it to her office?

I was literally so flabbergasted about the fact he said shes getting most of her support from right wing anti abortion american groups that i felt the urge to post on mn. Because its wrong. And seemed so insane. And i was shaking once id shut the door.

Grammarnut · 22/02/2023 16:52

What a total prt. Did he bother to explain what was 'more complicated' about not wanting men (people with dcks, like him) in women's spaces?

Sausagenbacon · 22/02/2023 16:52

the office will be able to find out who was canvassing that time, and where they went. So, IF they are so minded, they can find out

LakeTiticaca · 22/02/2023 17:00

They really don't want to be elected do they!!
I'm waiting for election time and fully intend to ask all the canvassers about their stance on single sex spaces, I will take their names and record their responses 😉

dimorphism · 22/02/2023 17:05

Isn't that libellous?

AthenaWhite · 22/02/2023 17:08

Defamation of character surely. I would write and explain what he said in an open letter and ask him to back up his claims.

dimorphism · 22/02/2023 17:11

Sorry posted too soon, I think saying she's funded by American right wing abortion groups is libellous and I hope she sues him for libel.

Is anyone else getting the sense that rather than admit that middle aged, kind, caring women who volunteer, take care of their kids and have been all round nice people and left leaning for decades might have a point about single sex spaces, misogynistic men are willing to believe that we've all had a massive personality change and got taken in by the right wing on this one issue only.

You'd think the lack of logic would floor them but no, misogyny is a powerful motivation to believe the impossible, seemingly. It's conspiracy theory territory really.

Women can't possibly think for themselves and actually want spaces free from male bodies, oh no, it's all right wing anti-abortion propoganda. Could he even HEAR himself? Next time record it.

HagoftheNorth · 22/02/2023 17:12

OP if you go to Rosie’s website then you can email her, if you record the time & general area, as pp says, they might be able to work out who it was 🤞

HagoftheNorth · 22/02/2023 17:13

Well done for standing your ground

StillWeRise · 22/02/2023 17:18

'more complicated than you think' ????
talk about mansplaining
I would have really struggled to remain civil after that
I'm going to hazard a guess that this man was young enough to be OPs son.

On the plus side we are learning their tactics
1 its complicated
2 this is a local election
3 has this actually impacted you personally

so it's easy to reply to those

but report definitely

RudsyFarmer · 22/02/2023 17:22

He said what now?! 😮

dimorphism · 22/02/2023 17:23

Yes, I'd like to see his response to any of:
' There is no point my daughter competing in X sport because a biological boy can say he's a girl and beat her easily' (e.g. Lia Thomas)
' I am / I know other women are self-excluding from mixed sex spaces (which are labelled 'woman's so lying to everyone about what they are) because I have past trauma that means I have a panic attack if alone with a strange male bodied person / my religion prohibits sharing these spaces with male bodied people'.
'Did you hear the woman ex-prisoner who had a coil fitted as she was so scared of being raped by the men who claim to be women incarcerated with her? Don't you think that constitutes a breach of human rights?'

With something a little more detailed than 'it's complicated'. It's not. Women say no. Men don't like that and they frame their refusal to accept 'no' as 'complicated'. We know the type of men who do that.

catandcoffee · 22/02/2023 17:24

What an arsehole he is and how dare he say that about her.
Yes OP report him.

And well done to you.💪

tillyoumakeit · 22/02/2023 17:26

You could tweet her a link to this thread?
