Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I live in Rosie Duffields constituency. Just had local election door knock from labour party

He asked what my main concerns were. I said my main issue was that i stood with Rosie and felt that Labour, as a party, from the top down, did not offer her enough support. And my main concern was womens safe spaces.

Man said, well, this is local elections and not about that, and that issue is more complicated than you think. What are your concerns, locally?

I said the local council is involved in issues to do with womens safe spaces. Like the womens refuges, the womans changing room at the local pool, etc. All spaces where biological men should not have access and that womens safe spaces was my main concern.

There followed a debate. And his stance is that its not that simple, i am being brainwashed by the right wing media, and that Rosie is in fact, (drumroll please...), mainly being supported by American right wing anti abortion groups.

Arrrrrghhhhhh. So that is where my local labour door knockers are at. Saying Rosies main core of support is American right wing anti abortion groups and i am being fooled by them. Silly, foolish, female me.

Reject feminism? Is that you Russell-Moyle?

The claim that Rosie Duffield “rejects feminism” is pretty odd, too.

I chatted to her when we were both on our way to the biggest women’s rights conference in Europe last year.

I’m surprised she didn’t mention it.

You seem to have difficulty with thinking IJClark.

  1. Your number one problem is the supposed neo-Nazis who turn up to threaten 'women and children' inside a library. As staff at the library, you would have a protocol to keep users safe and immediately call the police I presume?
  2. Your second problem is the police IF they fail to solve this alleged neo- Nazi infestation.
  3. Of course you follow up with your MP and other sources eg the media if the police is completely inept. Neo-Nazis are threatening library users is pretty serious. A series of letters to the MP sounds pretty effete as a response
  4. I have tremendous difficulty believing 1 and 2 occurred without evidence.

“the supposed neo-Nazis”? Neo-Nazis aren’t really neo-Nazis is quite the argument. You are opposed to Neo-Nazis, right?

Of course it isn't - there are chromosomes, reproductive organs, hormones etc.

My point was it is simple to determine and NOTHING to do with gender ideology. But then I think you already knew that.

Hmm. It’s not actually simple to determine as it happens. If only it were!

That’s funny. CRG often gets complaints that people aren’t allowed to be racist on there. I do hope that fact isn’t why you think it’s a cesspit?

As you and I both know (as you also regularly post on the CRG) the CRG is a cesspit where people could literally have an argument about whether grass is usually green (if well hydrated).

Certainly used to be bad, but it’s got a lot better now all the bigots know they can’t post without being held to account. It’s actually become quite run off the mill now, which is nice :)

ijclark -“Oh look a squirrel”

after reading this thread I’ll definitely be voting Tory until the left have started to respect and listen to women

Hey, if you want to vote for racists, that’s entirely up to you of course :)

True feminism is…throwing women of colour under the bus to preserve a narrow idea of feminism. [slow hand clap].

Oh of course. I think her rejection of feminism is a problem too. Also a bit weird that I sent her evidence of targeted harassment of a female colleague a couple of years back and she didn’t even reply (her colleague’s office did to thank me for raising it though).

Ooops, you gave yourself away there, ijclark. Defending women’s right to dingle-sex spaces is a rejection of feminism is it? Only if you think feminists believe women should obey men and give way to men. Which only makes sense to transactivists and related misogynists.

Ofcourseshecan · 22/02/2023 23:02

Single-sex spaces!

Hey, if you believe women should have Dingle spaces, that’s up to you. They can Dingle as much as they like imho.

I had a similar conversation locally with a door knocker from Lib Dems, although I was not quite as on point as the OP.

Me: “Can I ask one question about the Lib Dem position?”
Him: “Sure”
Me: “What is a woman?”
Him: “I’m not here to talk about trans issues, but gathering feedback about local issues.”
Me: “This is a women’s issue, not a trans issue.”
Him: “Well, here is a survey in case you want to give feedback on local issues”
Me: “I have a wife and daughter, and that makes this a local issue. Until more than one party knows what a woman is, I’m stuck with the Tories, which is deeply unfortunate because keeping them in power is the last thing this country needs”

He then politely said goodbye and went on his way.

Am now wondering what to do next. I don’t actually think the Lib Dems are likely to become relevant again any time soon, either in this local area or nationally, so filling out their survey would feel like a bit of a pointless exercise.

We had a Tory round, we had a lovely chat about how ridiculous the whole situation was. How Nicola Sturgeon had been essentially brought down by her inflexible rejection of women's rights. How crazy it was that they were putting men in women's prisons. I said it was nice to see that someone was on the side of sanity and reality, and that it was a very common sense side to be on.

Genuine question…do you think only white women need “saving”?

VictorStrand · 22/02/2023 23:05

Well, yy, it's easy for the Tories to pretend to be sensible now when they were the ones who started all this bullshit.

Not the last time I looked - I thought I’d blocked the bigots (GR was a mare).

I think women’s genuine concerns are not being taken seriously. We need a calm and serious discourse about this. Two weeks ago at the University of East Anglia a woman reported a male (on two separate occasions) being in the communal ‘female’ changing rooms with his tackle out. There were cubicles available, the male chose not to use them but instead to expose himself to females. There was no reason for the male to be getting his penis out on show in a ‘safe’ female space.

When the woman complained, her complaint was minimised. This is not right.9

ijclark · 22/02/2023 23:08

Wild how quickly this thread descended into “I believe in feminism, but not for women of colour”.

Second-wave feminism still grappling with the idea of emancipation for all women I see…

CampervanKween · 22/02/2023 23:08

Wasn't it Labour who brought in the ridiculous Gender Recognition Act in 2004. That so needs to be repealed. It's a complete nonsense.

VictorStrand · 22/02/2023 23:09

The funny thing is that when the Labour Party is asked about this eg the infamous Jess Phillips' interview - they always pretend no-one is mentioning it on the doorsteps. That's why it's good to let Rosie and the party know too.
Lots of people are talking about the erosion of women's rights on the doorstep, in shops, in universities, outside student unions, etc.

CampervanKween · 22/02/2023 23:10

I used to have a stack of Fair Play For Women leaflets by the door and I would hand them out to canvassers. It was an easy way to get the information out. I once gave one to a labour candidate who said he'd go away and research and get back to me.

WinterMusings · 22/02/2023 23:13

@BadgerWadger patronising wanker.

'It's more complicated than you think'

errr no, it's really not you twinkle & despite being a mere woman, I can do 'complicated'

fuck off! He wouldn't have got as far as Rosie.

Get some books on feminism, that might be a good start :)

PopGoesTheProsecco · 22/02/2023 23:15

Here’s the link. Basically, woman complains about an exposed penis in her supposedly safe ‘female’ space and gets told ‘it’s complicated’. No, it’s not.

Also, what about religious beliefs? They’re protected too aren’t they? So some religions have separate male and female prayer areas - whose rights trumps whose?
