Cis vs thabit

Cis is a term that has been imposed on people whose gender is consistent with their birth gender. It's a horrible sounding word and sounds like sissy so it's very inappropriate. Alternatives like birth gender and biological gender are contested and clumsy. So how about using the Arabic word for "consistent" which sounds rather nice: "thabit"?

WOMAN

FeinCuroxiVooz · 21/02/2023 23:26

a different word for the same concept is still just as offensive.

I have a female body. I am not in denial about that fact. As it happens I have no gender identity at all and don't have any idea what having one might feel like, but even if I did have a gender identity it would be offensive to have a word that imposes such a narrow sexist category on anyone if they haven't chosen it themselves. those who want to claim the term cis for themselves have every right to do so, but it's the assumption about the inner identity of every who isn't waving a pink&blue banner that is horrible.

which bucket of horrible sexist stereotypes do you most closely claim your personality matches? You can have A or B or there's one in the middle apparently, but you have to choose one of the buckets and if you refuse to choose we are going to assume that you are actually choosing bucket A and that you hate people who choose the wrong bucket.

On the one hand: "A rose by any other name" and all that.

On the other hand: fuck off.

Woman is fine as it is.

It's like coffee and decaffeinated coffee. You do not need to specify the original version, just the altered one.

Love the coffee analogy

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 22/02/2023 08:14

Nah

weightymatters73 · 22/02/2023 08:18

The problem you have is a very small proportion of the population want to be called something that require the other huge majority to be called something else.

The obvious QED is the majority get called that and the small proportion get the qualifier - "woman" for the majority and "trans-woman" for the minority is far more sensible.

Should start calling it out the term cis-woman for what it is - misogyny.

Happylittlechicken · 22/02/2023 08:19

Wonder if OP will be back…..

Kucinghitam · 22/02/2023 08:23

What's wrong with WOMAN?

Brefugee · 22/02/2023 08:32

I overthink these things sometimes.
If TWAW then woman is ok for everyone? (that is the logical end to that thought, not necessarily my own thinking on the subject)

So no need for cis. But. Trans women, from what i can see, often like (?) to use the qualifier "trans" so transwoman? but that's not a woman so many don't like that either. So trans woman. But then many don't like that because it's still a "qualifier". but if TWAW - then woman should be ok, ad nauseum ad infinitum

then my head explodes.

Hmmmmmmm

Abccde · 22/02/2023 08:42

Cis simply means not trans so they say.

To me that means, that Trans are the real woman and any one else who is not trans or cis should count themselves lucky that they can still be called women.

Fuck that for a laugh. How this bastardisation of language has been allowed, I will never understand.

I am a women because I am an adult human female.

I don't need any additional words to describe me or any other woman.

I know what I am and I know what a woman is.

A transwoman ain't that.

Unfortunately whilst sman is ok, gman is a bit tricky to pronounce. Otherwise it's a great system 😂

Of course only swoman and sman would be required for the sexes but the genders would need additional eg grapist.

I'm struggling to say it without sounding like Mrs Doyle offering a cup of tea..
'Gman, gman, gman'

Sex is real.

gender is a made up concept.

woman describes adult human female and nothing else is needed.

others can describe themselves however they want, but they can’t impose that on me.

Shodan · 22/02/2023 08:49

Woman is a great word, why don't we use that? Informative, snappy, rolls off the tongue easily- I vote for woman.

Everything else can be non-woman.

Booblessbeauty · 22/02/2023 08:53

I am a woman

I have no breasts, no uterus, no ovaries. I take medication to supress female hormones, I am bald and mostly wear mens clothes

Dont you dare try and redefine me into a "subset of woman" alongside some other "subset of women"

I am 100% woman, and noone with a Y chromosome is going to come even within shouting distance, let alone touching distance of what that is

borntobequiet · 22/02/2023 08:56

Uh?

borntobequiet · 22/02/2023 08:57

That was to the OP.

Flowers

yup

the whole ‘but what about women who have had sexual organs removed to treat diseases, are they really women?’ thing is not the gotcha those idiots think it is

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 22/02/2023 09:10

Woman is fine thanks. It's been fine for years... just because a sub group have decided they want to be called women doesn't mean we need to change it. Let the sub group think up their own name. How about trans-women?

Ironic isn't it... trans-women don't like being called trans-women so women are labelled transphobic if they say it. And when women say they don't like being called cis women trans-women don't like that either so women are called transphobic.

guinnessguzzler · 22/02/2023 09:39

Love it @MichelleScarn that is definitely the correct pronunciation.

Love the coffee analogy

I would too, except for the fact that coffee and decaffeinated coffee are both coffee.

The real equivalent to “transwoman” would have to be something like decaffeinated tea that was calling itself coffee.

Mrs Doyle would be having conniptions at the cheek of it.

SidewaysOtter · 22/02/2023 10:21

Trans are the real woman and any one else who is not trans or cis should count themselves lucky that they can still be called women.

That attitude definitely abounds. When I first set foot into the Feminism boards about five years ago, talk of this was the thing that peaked me. I went on to Twitter and came across some charmers saying “We trans people own womanhood now, you’ll have to be something else”.

Blew my mind.
