Colleague discussing the "benefits" of FGM 🤢

Feefee00 · 20/02/2023 09:28

A colleague has recently moved from a country in Africa. He was telling another colleague about the benefits of FGM. He was complaining how it's getting banned everywhere when it prevents women being unfaithful, getting raped while their husbands are away. He also said when women wear trousers it can rub on the clit causing excitement. I got really upset about the conversation and said the thought of someone holding their daughter down and inflicting that on her is barbaric. I then walked away I can't believe people believe this in 2023 and we have people in this country who believe in it. I want to report him but I'm scared of being called racist.

Has anyone dealt with this kind of thing? Or what the procedure is ?

If it's a hospital and he discusses FGM with patients at the hospital they might wrongly assume his views are medical advice.

How is someone who believes "FGM prevents women being unfaithful, getting raped while their husbands are away. He also said when women wear trousers it can rub on the clit causing excitement." working in a hospital anyway?
Does he also believe in exorcism of evil spirits and juju men as medical practice?

2bazookas · 20/02/2023 11:04

FGM is illegal in UK and anyone promoting/encouraging it may face police investigation see "aiding and abetting"

www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/female-genital-mutilation

I would initially report all his comments to HR. naming him and the other witness, and demand that he aplogises to you for such vile talk and undertakes no such criminal aiding and abetting of FGM will ever happen in the workplace.

If HR don't pursue it I'd take it to the police.

WarriorNun · 20/02/2023 11:08

I don't know, but believe due to reading between the lines, that one of the reasons for reporting to the police is because that even DSGs May wobble over taking it seriously, especially if it's a colleague or someone they know personally.

So handing onto people within the organisation increases the potential for it to be watered down.

The other reason is that in these instances time can be of the essence, travel, airports etc.

Yes he was also discussing JuJu , no the patient wasn't present at the time. I have reported.

I don't have his details I don't know his full name or where he lives just his first name. So I need the organisation to step in as they will have more details. If I ring the police and say Joe but I don't know where he lives or if the kids live in the UK they don't have much to go on.

I lived in Africa as a child. JuJu men terrified me. This is middle ages belief in evil sprits, drilling holes in peoples skulls to let the bad thoughts out, burn the witch levels of backwardsness. It has no place in any society other than a historical record of how badly people can behave when they believe in this nonsense.
Anyone who genuinely believes in it should be nowhere near a hospital.

2bazookas · 20/02/2023 11:25

it's an independent hospital male only MH so
no patients are immediately at risk.

So far as the hospital is concerned, the risk is that they are employing overseas medical staff who approve, and might procure or carry out criminal surgical abuse while in the UK. Or instruct it to be done elsewhere. I think you'll find they are very interested indeed (and so are the police).

It's a criminal offence for a parent (while in UK) to permit aid or abet FGM to be done on their daughter back home, in another country.

The police will contact the workplace and figure out who is he fairly rapidly from a first name and place of employment.

”joe the staff nurse/HCA or works at city psych unit on ward x, who is a recent immigrant from x country” will identify him easily enough.

2022again · 20/02/2023 11:45

Hopefully you will get the appropriate action from your HR department/safeguarding lead, I would say that if he works in health care this would compromise his ability to work within our health system….he may be working in a male only mental health environment now but you don’t know what future employment he may move into and female patients within mental health can be very vulnerable. The fact that he has had this conversation openly already demonstrates lack of appropriate professional boundaries…I do hope the colleague he was having this conversation with was likewise shocked.

His daughter is at risk. There is no way he'd be so open about "the benefits" at work and then not inflict that on his daughter.

Report to HR and the police.

You are not being racist.

This, 100%. He sounds extremely dangerous and absolutely vile. PLEASE report him to the police and HR.

WarriorNun · 20/02/2023 12:07

If he's caring for men with MH he could potentially radicalise them with these ideas, so I would say he's also safeguarding risk from this pov, in that he clearly doesn't recognise the issues.

OnlyTheWeedsGrow · 20/02/2023 12:07

What did the colleague he was speaking to say or do?
I would hope s/he has also reported it.

DarkForces · 20/02/2023 09:35

I'd be suggesting that if men want to prevent rape and infidelity, maybe we should be cutting their penises off.

Yes. A permanent and viable solution to the problem. anaesthetic optional

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 20/02/2023 12:26

ancientgran, I'm sure that poster was referencing men with the attitudes as expressed by the OP. I was too. Not men in general. I can see now that it reads that way, sorry.

All decent men want to prevent rape and infidelity - they just don't look to women for the solution to that.

Sorry, OP, derailed your thread a bit.

Mammajay · 20/02/2023 13:04

This thread dismays me. Anyone with these views about fgm and JuJu should not be working in a hospital or school or any setting where their role gives them status and authority. The fear of being accused of being racist often stoops people from calling it out so well done op and let us know how you get on.

Sunriseinwonderland · 20/02/2023 13:09

Tell him women don't rape, men do how about removing the penis, that would prevent all of these problems.
Report him to your manager, he should not be saying clearly sexist things like this at work. He is paid to work not express his opinion on FGM. It isn't rascist.

Sunriseinwonderland · 20/02/2023 13:10

P.S At work I have no opinion on anything. I am paid to work not air my opinions.

Aquamarine1029 · 20/02/2023 13:10

I wouldn't want this man anywhere near me. I would report this to every single entity I could.

If I knew someone was going to commit FGM I'd phone the police in a heartbeat. But this thread is about dobbing someone in for having an opinion, and that's not on. Albeit a vile, disgusting, misogynistic opinion, but an opinion nonetheless.

It’s up to the authorities, not OP (and certainly not us Mumsnetters) to evaluate if that opinion is likely to materialise into physical harm.
It’s an opinion that is at odds with UK law.

unclebuck · 20/02/2023 13:26

What did the other colleague say? I would be very vocal about this and also inform the police so that his daughter receives support/protection

AngeloMysterioso · 20/02/2023 13:32

I want to report him but I'm scared of being called racist.

Pretty sure that’s how those bastards in Rotherham and Rochdale got away with their horrific crimes for so bloody long.

Feefee00 · 20/02/2023 13:40

I did report it to safeguarding cause he has a daughter. People saying women should have their clits cut off to stop them cheating/getting raped is barbaric it's illegal here. I can't believe people believe it in 2023. The JuJu thing I don't know much about it he was talking about witches and curses which I was also surprised people still believe. I've been too sheltered I think.

"He was complaining how it's getting banned everywhere when it prevents women being unfaithful, getting raped while their husbands are away."

He thinks it prevents women being raped? I was unaware that rapists raped women to give the women pleasure<boak>.
