Another step on the road to restoring women's rights and free speech.
The Telegraph report that Bristol's Students’ Union (SU) having previously "disciplined" Women Talk Back (WTB), its own feminist group, for excluding male-born trans women from talks on rape and sexual assault have backed down in an out of court settlement.

The union has admitted that “affiliated clubs and societies may lawfully offer single-sex services and be constituted as single-sex associations” under the Equality Act.

I'm sure the Guardian will report on this shortly 🙄

TheGreatATuin · 04/02/2023 19:57

That is absolutely fantastic. The way she was treated was nothing short of shocking. I hope its a bloody massive settlement for all the stress they put her through

MrsOvertonsWindow · 04/02/2023 19:58

I know she's posted on Mumsnet before.

This has cost her a lot personally and I'm so pleased she's been vindicated. Worth noting that it's yet another women of colour that these vile people have "disciplined / sanctioned". Quite the coincidence.

Well done, Raquel! Brava!

corlan · 04/02/2023 20:02

That's excellent news. Such a shame though that women are having to spend so much time, money and effort to get single sex exemptions upheld.

nilsmousehammer · 04/02/2023 20:06

Bravo Raquel!

And yes: ridiculous that women have to fight like this - those few who have the courage, time, money and energy - to get the law to be upheld.

Because if they didn't, it's not like the police or government intend to get off their bums and do anything about it.

SigourneyHoward · 04/02/2023 20:06

Excellent news! Is there an archive version of the story as for me its paywalled - thanks in appreciation!

CompleteGinasaur · 04/02/2023 20:06

Good Lord, this has been going on for so long that I had almost forgotten about it. I'm sure Raquel, however, has had no such luxury, and I cannot imagine the stress this must have put her through. Brilliant result (although how it could ever have been taken to court in the first place is beyond me - shame on you, Bristol University) and thank you , Raquel.

nzborn · 04/02/2023 20:07

I'm so pleased for her

After what has happened in Bristol, will Swansea University now allow its Feminist Society to function?

IwantToRetire · 04/02/2023 20:33

Congratulations to Raquel Rosario Sanchez for persisting and winning, as you have not just won for you but for all women.

And this is a real admission:

The union has admitted that “affiliated clubs and societies may lawfully offer single-sex services and be constituted as single-sex associations” under the Equality Act.

As so many people and institutions have tried to deny this. Including idiots giving evidence to the Women and Equality Commission.
