Another step on the road to restoring women's rights and free speech.
The Telegraph report that Bristol's Students’ Union (SU) having previously "disciplined" Women Talk Back (WTB), its own feminist group, for excluding male-born trans women from talks on rape and sexual assault have backed down in an out of court settlement.

The union has admitted that “affiliated clubs and societies may lawfully offer single-sex services and be constituted as single-sex associations” under the Equality Act.

I'm sure the Guardian will report on this shortly 🙄

Brilliant! I thought about her and this case from time to time. So brave and vindicated for keeping this up!

That's excellent news. Such a shame though that women are having to spend so much time, money and effort to get single sex exemptions upheld.

This has taken so long even though the law was reasonably clear in the first place. I am so annoyed at what politicians' failure to do their scrutiny properly has put women through.
It may be multi-stranded but it is still amazing how quickly the tentacles of 'gender identity ideology' coupled with 'no debate' have spread everywhere through most UK institutions.
Academics/Chancellors who should have known better have allowed this to happen on their watch.

Imnobody4 · 04/02/2023 21:28

Brilliant news. Am so grateful to Raquel for her courage and tenacity.

Fantastic news!

PicturesOfDogs · 04/02/2023 21:33

So pleased to read about this!

but can someone with a bit more knowledge than me help me out on the implications of them ‘backing down’, and not letting it be decided by a judge?

I’m really ignorant when it comes to legal matters.
Will this case have any effect on other similar cases?
Will there be an official ‘judgement’/any paperwork on this?

I know they were keen that their disclosures were not shared with the public

Tinysoxxx · 04/02/2023 21:34

Well done! Clear judgement and gives other women in universities confidence.

BettyFilous · 04/02/2023 21:41

Well done Raquel and her feminist student society group! 👏 I saw Raquel in action at Filia in October. She’s so impressive, I am sure she has a bright career ahead of her.

Wonderful!

nauticant · 04/02/2023 21:53

Well that's just fucking marvellous. I'd forgotten that linking to a case update on a crowdfunder will trigger an auto-censor.

I posted that having lost her case nearly a year ago:

I have lost my legal case against the University of Bristol. The University was able to successfully argue that they do not owe a duty of care to students who, like me, face intimidation and violent threats from trans activist students and staff. The court found that in the enactment of their internal policies, the University did not act unlawfully.

to have carried on and got this settlement shows astonishing resilience.

catandcoffee · 04/02/2023 22:26

So very pleased for her...............amazing woman

Lem0nsherbert · 04/02/2023 22:34

This is amazing news - comes to something when it takes 4 years for an organisation to recognise the actual law, I must say.

Well done, Raquel, and ¡enhorabuena!

deeperthanallroses · 04/02/2023 22:36

I thought I remembered her losing and was gutted for her and what that meant generally - is this an appeal that they’ve settled? Does anyone know what impact it will have if any on future cases since there’s no judgement? Brilliant they made that statement.

DonatellaBella · 04/02/2023 22:40

Excellent news! 🍾🎉
