"‘It might never happen, love’ is no basis for law" Janice to the point, as ever.

Thanks for sharing this, @Igneococcus

Janice - excellent article. It’s a great summary for anyone confused by the events of the last week or so.

You nail the misogyny of those enraged male MPs - can’t be bothered to write their names- towards the brilliant Miriam and Rosie perfectly: “Shut up, bitch. Sit down, bigot.”

Keep writing, please, Janice.

aweegc · 21/01/2023 07:26

Brilliant piece, as usual from her!

I'm glad she included this, "Besides, the Scottish government itself doesn’t see a gender recognition certificate (GRC) as “a bit of admin”. It argued in the Court of Session that a GRC makes a male person female in all circumstances, even the few, vital single-sex exemptions laid out in the Equality Act — and the judge Lady Haldane agreed. In Scotland now, legal sex always trumps biological sex."

This ruling needs to be highlighted in every discussion about the situation re Equality Act's application across the UK and the Scottish self-ID GRCs. The fact that Scotland now has a different legal definition of what a woman is, is hugely significant. When the SNP say that single-sex spaces will remain, for example, and not impact the Equality Act - ie "it's just admin" - it's not merely that a GRC is easier to obtain, it's that there is no legal distinction allowed at all based on biology, unlike in England. This is being exploited by the likes of Starmer (and others).

The journalists who have now started asking proper questions in the trans and women's rights arenas, need to get in top of this quickly. It should be used to ask every question-dodging interviewee which definition of women it is they're applying to their argument.

FrancescaContini · 21/01/2023 07:28

It’s absolutely terrifying as well as mind boggling that legal sex now trumps biological sex in Scotland.

What was Lady Haldane thinking with her ruling?

nancyglancy · 21/01/2023 07:33

Thank goodness for women like Janice Turner. Clear and rational in her anger, able to convey so concisely why women are so concerned. Flowers Janice if you are reading.

Blort · 21/01/2023 07:34

Brilliant thank you

SallyLockheart · 21/01/2023 07:39

Thank you for sharing. Brava Janice!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 21/01/2023 07:52

That is a great article although it makes me sick and anxious to read it. I work in healthcare, have for many years and I know that men will exploit this to gain access to vulnerable women.

Slothtoes · 21/01/2023 07:53

i’ve never been more grateful for how Janice Turner has plateaued at the absolute top of her journalistic game, her writing on women and this politics is impeccable.

aweeGc it’s very frightening.

Igneococcus · 21/01/2023 07:54

There is also this article in the Scotland section:
"Voters both sides of border oppose Scotland’s gender reform, poll shows"

Thanks for sharing and agree, great article. Really shines a light on the misogyny embedded in the ideology and causing so many to leap to defend it. You couldn't support this nonsense unless you really despise women.

newtowelsplease · 21/01/2023 07:58

Fabulous piece. I hope Janice sees this thread as i won't comment on the times website any more due to the requirement to use my own name.

FigRollsAlly · 21/01/2023 07:59

Great piece. I didn’t know that Alistair Campbell had admonished Laura K for covering this, what a pompous git he is.

Whyjustwhy123 · 21/01/2023 08:03

Great article, finding these articles (like the one by Rosie also) so helpful for me to articulate my own argument with others and also share with others who may think (obviously mistakenly) that MN is not a serious source of information.

Great piece. I didn’t know that Alistair Campbell had admonished Laura K for covering this, what a pompous git he is.

He said she spent too long asking KS about the issue
