"‘It might never happen, love’ is no basis for law" Janice to the point, as ever.

Weird that men like Alistair Campbell and Lloyd Russell Moyle have so much faith in their fellow men not to abuse loop holes or special status. I take it they've not bothered to follow the stories about police rapists?

And seeing how Russell Moyle used his physical presence to intimidate Miriam Cates in parliament, I would say he is precisely the kind of man I never want to share an enclosed space with.

Exactly. It's wilful blindness or maybe it's arrogance or ignorance - I can never decide which because they all result in the same stupid statements.

Or Lord Falconer, who pompously wafts away concerns, tweeting that “the vast majority” of new male GRC holders “are likely to be genuine”.

What doesn't he get? This reform will get every predator in the land rubbing their hands in glee. Fill out a form and access women and children in all their private spaces. Yay-hay.

I wonder if he's so misogynistic that he thinks surely no 'normal' man actually wants to become a legal female - yuck. Not even a dyed in the wool predator. Only poor, poor men on the brink of true desperation would ever consider it.

And the bit they never want to say out loud - that the harm caused to women by the minority is acceptable collateral damage in the interests of not making men sad.

I think it's important to make them say it. Which is why we need to keep asking, politely and calmly and persistently.

Though for me, the issue is not just 'men' in women's spaces. Eddie Izzard, for example, feels no safer than any other male in my intimate spaces. I don't want others deciding for me that Eddie unseeable personal interpretation of a gender identity entitles him to use spaces dedicated for women. I don't believe that sexist stereotypes should be perpetuated so I genuinely can't see any difference bewteen him and other males.

This is the whole point

I think this is exactly it for many men.

Peppermintaero · 21/01/2023 10:37

Off to buy The Times to support Janice Turner.

Alistair Campbell is a disgrace, just like every other person who prioritises men’s wishes over women’s needs.

OldCrone · 21/01/2023 10:42

Genuine what?

Genuine crossdressers?

Genuine autogynephiles?

Genuinely so deluded that they actually believe that they are women?

Or just genuine predators?

Datun · 21/01/2023 10:44

But yeah, great article. She never waffles. Every word counts.

And again, it's not only women's concern that is significant, it's the reaction to it from certain men.

Highlighting that, analysing it, pointing it out to other women, and men, is vital.

Overt sexism is easy to spot. But this insidious, under the counter variety, cloaked in oh-so-fucking-faux 'progressiveness' needs challenging at every turn.

These men need to know that their attempts to stick it to women are going to be held up. On Twitter, in the papers and yes, on Mumsnet - getting involved in politics for 23 years. Akcherly.

Yes that got me too.

They 'genuinely' want one that's for sure. And if a man reellly reelly wants something, then being genuine about that is enough, of course.

God, I Janet Turner drinks.

Sorry. I don't understand what you mean. Can you explain?

Nor can I. It's a perfectly common opinion. I'll check.

Exactly.

One of the very few upsides of the trans debacle is that it has exposed the misogyny of so many ‘progressive’ men. They really do not regard women as fully human.

I'm going to try my comment again, while I wait for a response from HQ.

I understand why people make a distinction between transvestites, transsexuals, and predatory men who will exploit the gender recognition act. Janice Turner, herself, makes a distinction between men who are called transwomen, and man who aren't.

But for me, the motivation is irrelevant. Men who want to use women's spaces (set up to address sexism ffs), against their will, are already exercising their sexism.

Women aren't a resource, they're not a tool to be put into the service of men.

Also, it's the height of enough to use the very solutions women fought for to address sexism, to perpetuate it!

GyozaGuiting · 21/01/2023 10:59

I’ve posted this article elsewhere on here today, glad it’s getting the attention it deserves.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 21/01/2023 11:00

‘Keep Mumsnet out of politics….’ …actually keep women out of politics aka government, aka public life. That’s what they mean.

Keep politics in Mumsnet, I say, even the ranting anti Tory people , even the right wing conspiracy theorists, the secessionists, the unionists, the Royalists, the Megan defenders, the republicans…..let everyone have a say, and let’s debate their opinions. That’s what élevâtes it to a serious site, and one which obviously makes these MRA tremble.

RoyalCorgi · 21/01/2023 11:03

Good piece here from MBM about the limits of Lord Falconer's tweeted thread:

We’re expected to pray that careless laws, framed for others’ benefit, don’t hurt us in practice

Sums up the entire debate in one sentence.

newtowelsplease · 21/01/2023 11:04

@howmanybicycles

This bit of your comment is what I was referring to:

"I don't believe that sexist stereotypes should be perpetuated so I genuinely can't see any difference bewteen him and other males."

I was agreeing with you, that there's no difference between the risks that various types of males, whatever they call themselves, present. This is why the law needs to allow for excluding them from women's spaces. All of them!

Brilliant article - with a shout out to mumsnet 😀. Thanks for the share @Igneococcus

I do wonder how many people who never go on mumsnet but do read the Times will wonder what the hell is going on here that warrants its own placard telling us to basically shut up.

If even one person comes here and reads some threads and see the bigger picture them once again the TRAs have done our job for us. It's like they just can't help themselves!

Ponks · 21/01/2023 11:18

Janice Turner is such a refreshing voice of reason and sanity.

Datun · 21/01/2023 11:20

My comment was deleted for offensive generalisations. I've tried to retype it, but to be honest, I can't see which bit they are talking about! And I'm not interested in playing comment ping-pong. So I've left it. My 'replacement comment' pretty much covers it anyway.

The point of my comment was I divide the people in this conflict into men and women. To me it's irrelevant to subdivide the category of men into men with motivation A, or B, or C.

There, that's not a generalisation, that's my own thought process on how I address this conflict.

They really cant.

Telling the world that you want biggest gathering of women in history to keep their noses out of politics, is such an own goal, it's difficult to believe. And yes I'm bloody laughing. 😂
