"‘It might never happen, love’ is no basis for law" Janice to the point, as ever.

Janice is fabulous as alwsys

apparently Campbell discussed it with Rory Stewart on the rest is politics this week & said it was basically all too difficult and nuanced. Good thing Labour never tried to tackle anything difficult and nuanced like peace in Northern Ireland when Campbell was advising the government - oh wait!!!

Sausagenbacon · 21/01/2023 08:39

After AC said that GC women were like 'red-faced golf club bores', in The Rest is Politics, and RS vaguely bleated, I stopped listening to it.

Sausagenbacon · 21/01/2023 08:40

I mean , when they discussed it a few months ago

Slothtoes · 21/01/2023 08:42

I remember how in the New Labour years women in NI were told to shut up about wanting abortion rights there, because to give them the same rights as the women in the rest of the UK had had since the 1960s (it was asserted) would have threatened the Good Friday agreement. Plus ca change

Pot, kettle, black…has anyone seen AC’s documentary on AC’s depression? Self absorbed, insufferable bore. No idea how his wife - who features in the documentary - stands him. And the sex writing 🤦‍♀️😂 he did when younger…

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 21/01/2023 08:50

Janice is amazing. she has been on this for years and she's so clear

fuck knows how anyone could read that and still think gender woo is in anyway a good idea

Abccde · 21/01/2023 08:52

The journalists who have now started asking proper questions

I've not seen that yet. The same journalist who have always known what are going in are asking the same excellent questions they always have.

The (mainly male) journalists are still not asking the right questions or understanding the issue.

BoredOfThisMansWorld · 21/01/2023 09:01

Weird that men like Alistair Campbell and Lloyd Russell Moyle have so much faith in their fellow men not to abuse loop holes or special status. I take it they've not bothered to follow the stories about police rapists?

And seeing how Russell Moyle used his physical presence to intimidate Miriam Cates in parliament, I would say he is precisely the kind of man I never want to share an enclosed space with.

Merrilydancing · 21/01/2023 09:12

Another fantastic article, clearly articulates the issues surrounding GRR.

Parmavi0lets · 21/01/2023 09:20

Looks like AC and his mates are the red faced, golf club bores he was complaining about.

Thank you Janice 💐

Parmavi0lets · 21/01/2023 09:21

Apologies for the incoherent rant there. @mnhq pls sort out the issue with Samsung Internet, it is immensely frustrating!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/01/2023 09:33

There is also this article in the Scotland section:
"Voters both sides of border oppose Scotland’s gender reform, poll shows"

It's really interesting that in the poll a majority of people support "making changes to the current process of obtaining a gender recognition certificate" but not the actual proposed changes to open it up to more people. Maybe they actually want the process tightened up, rather than made easier!

howmanybicycles · 21/01/2023 09:39

Awesome Janice!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/01/2023 09:40

It's a fantastically on point article.

Villagetoraiseachild · 21/01/2023 09:40

Thank you for sharing this. Thank you Janice Turner.
Stunning piece of writing, beautifully encapsulates what needs to be known, read, understood and acted upon.

howmanybicycles · 21/01/2023 09:41

Though for me, the issue is not just 'men' in women's spaces. Eddie Izzard, for example, feels no safer than any other male in my intimate spaces. I don't want others deciding for me that Eddie unseeable personal interpretation of a gender identity entitles him to use spaces dedicated for women. I don't believe that sexist stereotypes should be perpetuated so I genuinely can't see any difference bewteen him and other males.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 21/01/2023 09:58

Though for me, the issue is not just 'men' in women's spaces. Eddie Izzard, for example ...

Is a man.

@Parmavi0lets the Chrome.browser (while an annoying browser in itself) may give you a workaround to the Samsung problem.

Faffertea · 21/01/2023 10:00

Thank you Janice.

As always, a brilliant articulate piece that calmly but clearly lays out the facts.

teawamutu · 21/01/2023 10:00

I'd go further, bicycles - I'd prefer to share a space with a man who knows he's a man than a male with the arrogance and entitlement to claim he's the same as me, and the expectation that I will submit and comply with the pretence.

howmanybicycles · 21/01/2023 10:01

I think so too but in Janice's article, I don't think he'd count as one. This is why clear definitions are vital.

Faffertea · 21/01/2023 10:02

@teawamutu

Exactly. I’d rather share with a man who knows he is, recognises his own discomfort and mine and aims for as little distress for both of us than a man who not only thinks he’s the same as me despite a clear ‘no’ but is enjoying it all so much.

Faffertea · 21/01/2023 10:05

@howmanybicycles
Thats because Eddie Izzard is a man. You correctly read him as such and your gut feeling, evolved over 1000s of years correctly tells you to be wary because he belongs to the group that harm women.
To be clear mods I am not saying Eddie is a predator or wishes women harm. But he is make. And we’re evolved to recognise them to protect ourselves.

howmanybicycles · 21/01/2023 10:07

I've no reason to suspect he's a predator either. He has shown himself to be someone who priorities his need for validation over women's need for safety though which does make him (he's happy for people to use this sex-based pronoun), albeit through an internalisation of misogyny rather than overt predation, a danger to women. Some people think he's a woman. I still don't want him in my spaces.

GallopingGreen · 21/01/2023 10:22

Fantastic article- thank you for sharing. It sets it all out to so clearly. I will be sharing widely as people need to understand the crux of the issues as set out here!
