Scottish Parliament final debate on Gender Recognition Reform today

At some point after 2pm, in the Big Room (the Chamber).

www.parliament.scot/chamber-and-committees/whats-on-and-watch-live/whats-on#wm

Will be interesting to see how the Amendments go down, if they are all struck down as the ScotGov wishes - www.holyrood.com/news/view,gender-recognition-reform-crunch-vote-after-shona-robison-warns-msps-over-amendments

'the Scottish Conservatives have warned that the debate could lead to a "travesty of democracy" because a 15 minute time limit for each proposal will "shut down" discussion.'

Are they really going to keep going with this all night?

2Rebecca · 21/12/2022 20:07

I wish they'd put the amendment details up on parliament TV

BlackForestCake · 21/12/2022 20:08

Knowing how little the SNP cares for parliamentary procedure, is there any danger they could try to just dump the remaining amendments and move to a vote? Can they do that?

ArabellaScott · 21/12/2022 20:08

Amendments here, scroll down to 'Timed groupings' doc.

Yesterday they said they would go until 2am but actually they broke up shortly after midnight, I think. But that was yesterday and there was still a bit of wiggle room. Now, the homework is due in tomorrow. Maybe they’ll get up really really early and finish it all before breakfast.

DameMaud · 21/12/2022 20:15

I find this all very confusing and having to half listen. So far only 1 or 2 amendments passed by Jamie Green. Have I got that right? Anyone clear on what they were?

ArabellaScott · 21/12/2022 20:16

Sorry, DameMaud, I've dropped the ball. If you look through that link posted upthread you might be able to see them? Otherwise, I think transcript up tomorrow.

No apologies needed Arabella! You've been doing us all a great service!
Just hoping someone more process-savvy might have been following in detail as ears perked up at sounding like 2 agreed.

Whatthechicken · 21/12/2022 20:19

seems like the desperation to get it through is showing, why?

Abccde · 21/12/2022 20:21

I can't figure out what Labour are going to do.

There has been talk of them whipping to support the bill, but after today's discussions where I think some MSPs have really got home the impact of WAG, well how can a party that is in opposition support this ?

Its an evil bill for WAG.

Also, the only way to reduce the power of the SNP (And I think that absolutely needs to happen even if you support independence (they are rotten to the core) is to have a strong Labour party.

But Labour are going to through away this golden opportunity? Does the Trans Lobby really wield that much power?

To keep Kate Forbes from resigning when she gets back from maternity leave in the new year.

Abccde · 21/12/2022 20:24

*throw

FrizzledFrazzle · 21/12/2022 20:24

I think Labour are going that supporting the bill is win-win: they get to look nice and progressive now because they are supporting trans people. Then if it goes pear shaped, they point the finger at the SNP. So frustrating.

Russell Finlay:

'Today shortest day of the year, but it perhaps feels like the longest'

Yep. I've hit the wall again!

Labour? Throwing away a golden opportunity? It's what they do best.

Ain't that the truth

To keep Kate Forbes from resigning when she gets back from maternity leave in the new year.

Or move down the Stonewall league tables?

I can't see that it's about Kate Forbes.

If she was principled she would be voting.

It's about Power and Sturgeon wielding hers.

And as others have said, pass it without too many questions being asked.

Sturgeon is good at apologising and saying it shouldn't of happened and she will learn from it - until it happens again just a few weeks later.

Sturgeon talks a lot - her talk is cheap.

This shows how mad it is.

Qu: does this close off the UK gender recognition panel to people living in Scotland?

A: until commencement they can use that route. Then they can use the new one.

I think he was looking for a straight yes or now here. Answer seems to be no but it typifies these past couple of days. It's all as clear as mud.

'MSPs are so far behind that they're just going to complete the amendments tonight, with the final debate and vote on the Gender Recognition Reform bill now taking place tomorrow.'

'everything that isn't the stage three amendments has been moved forward.

So MSPs will sit on to finalise the bill tonight, then have the debate and vote on that finalised bill tomorrow.'

From the Beeb. I'm calling it a night, can't focus anymore.

Will transsexuals move to England.

The Scottish GRC will be handed out like sweeties.

I can almost see if becoming the lada of GRCs compared to the UK one which is the Porsche.

Easier is not always better.
