Important new initiative for government workers. This is where a huge fight back is going to happen in behind the scenes government, in memos and meetings. If we don't win in the civil service, it doesn't matter how many demos or cases we win, how many twitter threads we write, sooner or later sex differences will be erased. If you work in government/public sector get involved asp.

seen-network.uk/

"We are happy to announce the launch of our new UK cross-government staff network, the Sex Equality and Equity Network.
SEEN is a staff network committed to promoting and supporting sex equality and equity between women and men in our workplaces, and helping all staff to thrive at work and fulfil their potential. The focus of our network is on challenging sex discrimination and upholding rights and protections that relate to sex (including the protections provided to those with the protected characteristics of sex, pregnancy and maternity and sexual orientation, as set out in the Equality Act 2010). We recognise that to achieve this and ensure sex equality and equity sometimes requires treating women and men differently, according to our different rights and needs.

We are also committed to the protected belief (covered by the protected characteristic of religion and belief in the Equality Act 2010) that biological sex is binary and immutable, that biological sex matters for both women and men in our everyday lives, including for our rights and needs in the workplace, and that biological sex must not be conflated with, or replaced by, the concepts of gender or gender identity."

Didn't know the MoD had ALBs Smile

oliver123 · 13/12/2022 11:36

The UK govt website lists the ALBs for all depts (scroll down to see the MoDs). The MoD has 26 and includes the 3 armed forces museums, advisory bodies, research, equipment/components/services development & delivery, medical/safety, pensions committees, and so on. All specialised & varying sizes etc.

Tallisker · 13/12/2022 11:43

Sorry I wasn't doubting, I just couldn't imagine what MoD ALBs could be. Thanks to oliver I now know!

Found some for my own department that I didn't know about too, so thank you.

oliver123 · 13/12/2022 15:01

I know what you mean - the quantity and ‘why’? I remember the so-called bonfire of the quangos years ago…. (under Cameron?) A bit like the Hydra, they’ve just grown back 😂 as the cutting costs headlines hid the fact that there are specific needs for them.

Slothtoes · 13/12/2022 22:52

The ALBs are extremely specialised to what they do and we really need that specificity sometimes.

Thank you for link.

Thanks both for the links. Nice to see complaints having an effect.

Help!

I'm a Scottish civil servant on my way in to work, it's our team Christmas lunch today.

I'm going to have to stay sober amn't I?!

I'm so so angry

ResisterRex · 23/12/2022 09:09

Forth Flowers

I'd either not go, or arrive late and then leave early citing urgent work that needs doing. No drinking.

Borderlinehungry · 23/12/2022 09:34

Agree, Forth, stay sober.
You doubtless won’t be the only one not 100% keen (civil service understatement) on the bill.
Nearly the Christmas break.

👋Hello there, another one, we're everywhere.
Has anyone heard anything yet from the network yet?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 06/01/2023 13:48

Not a squeak.

Not heard anything at all

GreenAllOver · 09/01/2023 08:39

There’s a ‘please hold, we’re sorting out data issues’ message on DEFRA Yammer from late last year.

SEEN now has its own Yammer page, and (though there are a few deleted posts) that seems to have created a space where there can be debate rather than pile-ones and unevidenced accusations. Still only a few people posting and following, but given the initial reaction I completely understand why. I am still too worried about the career implications even to ask to join.

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 10/01/2023 15:05

@GreenAllOver could you ask to join and then ask a naive question asking about what it's all about? Gives you plausible deniability* if questioned, but also opens the floor for people to 'explain' it to you, thus potentially nudging any casual onlookers over the summit also...?

*Sad that you need this, but having worked in DEFRA a while back I do understand

Borderlinehungry · 14/01/2023 15:23

Has anyone heard anything from this network beyond the initial acknowledgement?

WomanWithoutNeedOfPrefix · 15/01/2023 11:03

I was in touch with them last week and they are still having problems with GDPR. They will be in touch as soon as they can.

wrongthinkofficial · 24/01/2023 21:41

Any news? Jealous of those who can see the Defra yammer, could do with a laugh.

Not going to say which department I'm in, but I know Whitehall officials in FCDO, BEIS, DfT and DfE who are very aware of what is happening, male and female, from all backgrounds. We're not alone!

GreenAllOver · 01/02/2023 07:49

Wrong, you’ll enjoy the irony of this! Notice on Yammer, advertising an event., along the lines of “Note, while virtual events are open to all, only trans and non binary people should attend in-person events”.

Which is of course fine, and right. But if the newly renamed Gender Network advertised an event as women only, trans and non binary people should not attend, I think it would get a very different reaction.

That's delightful. I hope at least one brave soul has used a '😐' emoji.

I'd be tempted to identify as non binary so that I could attend such the special event. I'm sure wearing DMs and avoiding mascara for the day would be sufficient?

ScrollingLeaves · 01/02/2023 16:22

💥📣Has everyone on this thread had a chance to consider signing and sharing this petition to update the Equality Act to make clear the protected characteristic ‘sex ‘ means biological sex?

We need 100,000 signatures for the Government to consider a Parliamentary debate.

I've done it and asked everyone I know to do it. I'm shocked more haven't. Will promote it yet again on my social network.
