Important new initiative for government workers. This is where a huge fight back is going to happen in behind the scenes government, in memos and meetings. If we don't win in the civil service, it doesn't matter how many demos or cases we win, how many twitter threads we write, sooner or later sex differences will be erased. If you work in government/public sector get involved asp.

seen-network.uk/

"We are happy to announce the launch of our new UK cross-government staff network, the Sex Equality and Equity Network.
SEEN is a staff network committed to promoting and supporting sex equality and equity between women and men in our workplaces, and helping all staff to thrive at work and fulfil their potential. The focus of our network is on challenging sex discrimination and upholding rights and protections that relate to sex (including the protections provided to those with the protected characteristics of sex, pregnancy and maternity and sexual orientation, as set out in the Equality Act 2010). We recognise that to achieve this and ensure sex equality and equity sometimes requires treating women and men differently, according to our different rights and needs.

We are also committed to the protected belief (covered by the protected characteristic of religion and belief in the Equality Act 2010) that biological sex is binary and immutable, that biological sex matters for both women and men in our everyday lives, including for our rights and needs in the workplace, and that biological sex must not be conflated with, or replaced by, the concepts of gender or gender identity."

Well this seems like a positive step, how long will it be allowed to run though?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 10/11/2022 11:07

This is an excellent development and much needed. Good luck to those who've set it up and hope lots of civil servants find the courage to join..

MountainWitch · 10/11/2022 11:20

Well done to those who've set this up, absolutely brilliant and so heartening to hear about.

Since the Maya case something like this is legally fine just needed to be established. Remember you can have faith staff support for religions which believe all sorts of "questionable" ideas. The Catholic Church and others do not abide by the Civil Service equality thinking on all sorts of stuff.

civilservice.blog.gov.uk/2018/02/08/championing-faith-and-belief-in-the-civil-service/

The Civil services even pays for chaplains in prisons and the military from all sorts of beliefs. They can go to prisons and tell gay inmates they are sinful. Say women are best at being house wives. Say that there are only two genders and how they work is set down in old books.

Guess what now we can have secular women and men saying sex matters, it is about science and equality. A crazy daring idea!

Oh, this is excellent. The very best of luck to them.

waterwitch · 10/11/2022 11:43

Well done to whoever set this up. Good luck - I think a lot of people will be relying on this group to bring back some sanity

Newname500 · 10/11/2022 11:52

Name changed for this but....I'm a member of SEEN :-)

Looking forward to welcoming more members as the word spreads!

emsyj37 · 10/11/2022 11:52

This group has cabinet Office authorisation and approval and it took the group who established it the best part of a year to do the work to make sure it would be a legitimate, recognised, official network. It's here to stay. I'm hugely grateful to those who have worked so hard behind the scenes to make it happen, and am proud to be a member.

Newname500 · 10/11/2022 11:53

Hi @emsyj37 ! waves

Beamur · 10/11/2022 11:55

My DH was telling me about this yesterday. He's civil service.
Sounds like a very welcome move and well done those involved.

Amazing work it really needs more publicity Mumsnet is a good place for that !!!

One question is it open to local government employees?

Hoping it inspires lots more similar groups.

@emsyj37 hi, is this something Magistrates can join? I volunteer as a Magistrate, it’s not a paid role. I am trying to raise awareness with fellow Magistrates that womens prisons are currently mixed sex but have been told in no uncertain terms by my bench Chair that the retiring room is NOT the place to talk about such things.

emsyj37 · 10/11/2022 12:29

I don't honestly know how far it extends in terms of who can join, I am not involved in running it I'm just a member - I'm sure if you email they will be able to advise.

AlisonDonut · 10/11/2022 12:31

Government or public sector.

I'd be in that network like shit off a shovel/squirrel up a tree if I wasn't already retired!

Playludo · 10/11/2022 12:38

I am a member, but haven't seen any comms about this either from my department or civil service news?

TheseCowsAreSmall · 10/11/2022 12:40

Very welcome news. I'm waiting to hear back if devolved administration civil servants can join.

I'm a member, it's a great idea. To the pp who said about devolved government, I think if you have a gov.wales or gov.uk email then you're ok to join.

Sorry, devolved administration not gov.

Slothtoes · 10/11/2022 13:04

Is joining this something that has to be granted permission for and must it be declared somewhere official by government employees or can they just do it?

Playludo · 10/11/2022 13:06

You can just do it. You have to sign up with your work email, but as I understand it they don't share membership.

LaPhroiagPrince · 10/11/2022 13:09

I've just emailed about joining. Pretty paranoid about even using my work email considering that in a science organisation we've been told we mustn't bring GC views to work, but fingers crossed I won't be sacked!

Such a relief to see this happening, I've been so stressed about the cult behaviour at work.
