Unbelievable: the LGBAlliance tweet that they're going to be at all the party conferences "we’ll be running a stand and a fringe event at the Lib Dems' annual bash in Brighton in September" and whoops the LibDems CEO tweets there has been an administrative error and there is no stand after all for the LGBA, "This is not correct. To confirm: you do not have a stand or a fringe at Lib Dem Conference. I have checked with the team and there has been an administrative error. Sorry for any confusion or inconvenience." A very half-heart apology there.

The LibDems have obviously been fielding complaints from teenagers again.

Why would anyone who is gay, or any woman, attend the LibDem conference with the intolerant attitudes they have?

Most LGB people have gender confusion if not downright dysphoria as children. Lo and behold, we go through puberty, discover we are same sex attracted and it resolves.

That's why LGB Alliance is keen to ensure that any conversion therapy ban doesn't criminalise therapy that helps LGB teens come to terms with their sexual orientation rather than leaping to the conclusion that being same sex attracted and not stereotypically gender conforming = trans.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 10/07/2022 17:09

A whole cohort of LGB kids and autistic kids are currently at risk of sterilisation or unnecessary body modification. The whole world should be concerned about this. It's an absolute outrage and scandal.

Helleofabore, you've previously said you don't know much about the LGBT community so I'm not sure why you keep commenting on issues pertaining to us.

Just catching up.

I presume you don't think of your continual negative commentary on threads in a GC community to be similarly problematic?!

You have an opinion and Helleofabore has what? Issues?

Hypocrite!

theclangersarecoming · 10/07/2022 17:32

It’s a common joke in the U.K. - to say something is like a “vegan cat” is to make a joke that they aren’t the ones making the decision. It’s a reasonably everyday saying, not just used in the context of “trans”.

Vegans might not massively like the saying, they even might take offence; but nobody seriously thinks it’s a slur worthy of getting the Equality Act involved or anything. (Sorry, vegan readers… 🌱)

As an aside, I notice from my Facebook feed a lot of companies here trying to sell insect-based cat food. I wonder how good their business plans are 😂 (though my cat does love a good spider).

Dancingwithhyenas · 09/07/2022 00:10

That’s fascinating. What’s the history with how that’s come about?

It makes sense if you think about it, Dancing. Identity politics is an individualistic 'luxury belief', about as far away from socialism or communism as it's possible to get. That kind of extreme individualism belongs with libertarianism at the far right of the political spectrum.

Communism has always supported women's rights -- in principle, though obviously as with any politics we see corrupted versions of it in practice.

That's why it's baffling that supporters of the gender identiy movement call their opponents "right wing", as an insult. They seem to see themselves as not being right wing. In reality, it's hard to be more rightwing than someone who believes they can transcend reality, and demands that society pays iip service to that belief.

Then I think you need to radically educate yourself on Australian history, instead of trying to defend a random error you’ve made:

Plopper: But US Supreme Court interracial marriage!
MN: That doesn’t have any relevance to the U.K. context
Plopper: But British Empire! <plops in random misunderstood link about Australian interracial marriage laws from an article that actually says this was a policy of individual Australian state governors and not the British>
MN: that article does not say what you think it does
Plopper: doubles down 🤦‍♀️

TOP TIP: No-one has ever been on the right side of history by making up historical fact.

Time to educate yourself on another bit of fundamental U.K. political history, @Hearach15 — Denis Healey’s First Law. You will find it will help you out.

A policy dating that began when Australia was a continent of British colonies.

Honestly, I know that British people like to pretend the ills of the Empire have nothing to do with them but that is quite funny.

I suggest you learn some imperial history. No British colony could pass a law with Royal Assent from a Governor appointed by the British Government.

What exactly IS 'trans people' 'conversion' that could have been included in the bill?

Why should trans people be included in the conversion bill, I hear you ask?

Well:

"Dr. Jack Turban, the study’s lead author and a resident physician in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, said it was the first study "to show that gender identity conversion efforts are associated with adverse mental health outcomes, including suicide attempts.”

I don't know about Labour but the Liberal Democrats received £100,000 from Ferring Pharmaceuticals.

They make puberty blockers.

Wow.

That is so blatant.

They actually compared trans toddlers to vegan cats. If you’re going to malign someone at least get your facts right. You’re coming across as very foolish, dim and a homophobic bigot.

Actually, they said "trans children":

twitter.com/MrJohnNicolson/status/1535349212753317888

But children are people too.

You say I'm a "homophobic bigot", out of interest, are you straight? You do seem it.

No, this is completely untrue. You're just making things up.

Yup. And they're so innocently obvious about it. Because they know no one could actually support, y'know, homosexuality. It's got to be a cover for anti-trans activism.

"your continual negative commentary on threads in a GC community to be similarly problematic?!"

If your ideas are so robust, why are you so afraid of them being challenged?

I did not know this was a safe space free where transphobic and homophobic ideas are meant to be free of scrutiny.

Funny, I have never heard anyone use the expression "like a vegan cat" and when I googled it the first result was a reddit post about the LGB Alliance. You're just making things up....

In the case of the LGBA it certainly is.

They've done more campaigning on GC issues than they have of actual issues pertaining to the gay community. e.g. gay asylum seekers or the rise in hate crime.

Stop spewing "scolding" at trans people for having the temerity to exist and propping up homophobes and I'll stop 😀

Conversion therapy is when sometime tries to make a transgender person cisgender i.e. not trans.

Many survivors describe it as torture:

"She was taken into a darkened room, strapped into a wooden chair and had electrodes placed on her arm. Picture after picture of women were projected onto the opposing wall. A switch was then thrown and an electric shock passed through her body."

AlisonDonut · 10/07/2022 18:23

That links says it was over 40 years ago.

What is the CURRENT activity in this 'conversion therapy'? As in, what would be included in the bill?
