Free beer for men at Bills' restaurant

Bills are offering free beer to men for Father's day. I asked them on their live chat if Transmen are included in the offer. The reply was 'it shouldn't be a problem'. So I replied 'ok so as Transmen are bio women are all bio women included in the offer in line with equality?' The answer 'I'm not sure but we do consider all of our customers to be equal'. As this appears as a politicians reply & does not answer my question I have sent them an e mail with my question. I await the reply.Any thoughts?

So we’re all men on Father’s Day. Let them to suggest otherwise.

sawdustformypony · 01/06/2022 22:52

Sounds like a win-win situation. top cis n trans bottoms on seats and great publicity. crafty princes.

CheeseMmmm · 02/06/2022 04:15

How much free beer? There must be t&c extensive and limits. Or they in for ridiculous bill!

tabbycatstripy · 02/06/2022 07:28

This isn’t my hill. Free beer for a young parent who has been persuaded they’re male and encouraged to remove their breasts because of internalised misogyny? I’ll buy them a beer. Poor people.

DameHelena · 02/06/2022 07:45

I think the interesting point here is that if it were Mother's day and they offered women free drinks, it'd be all over SM how trans women were 'excluded'.
Trans men, unless I'm very much missing something on Insta/Twitter, are not howling in protest about this.

Rightsraptor · 02/06/2022 07:55

I've had a complimentary bottle of prosecco in Cafe Rouge on Mother's Day, not had to prove I was a mother nor was I in the company of my children, who steadfastly ignore that day.

I'm wondering now how that works. Is it in reality an across the board thing, with everyone getting a bottle? Or did my friend and I 'pass' as mothers?

Not sure what I think of the Bill's promotion. Will some brave soul go an self ID as a dad and report back?

What would you have liked their response to have been?

Hallyup89 · 02/06/2022 08:15

I don't see the issue as long as all women and transwomen get a free drink on Mother's Day. You're stirring unnecessarily (and probably talking to some young person who didn't know how the hell to respond to you).

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 02/06/2022 08:21

I see your point OP. Society is still allowed to use the word man to mean men, but not woman to mean women.

Dashdotdotdash · 02/06/2022 08:39

Any thoughts?

Mostly that I don't care.

OvaHere · 02/06/2022 08:50

I've never heard of Bills. Is it a chain?
I can't say this bothers me in the grand scheme but there is some precedence of legal action for a similar thing.

I'm reminded of this story about Brewdog, who were taken to the small claims court for a promo they did on International Women's Day.

I think mother's and father's days promos are fair enough, but in the brave new world of self-id, any brand doing such a promo should be prepared for all of their customers to self-id as elligible for the deal.

But many places do a free Prosecco for Mother’s Day. Of all the potential issues this isn’t one.

Mostly because the marketing I saw actually says “dads, grandads and general top
blokes” while I looked up what they did for Mother’s Day and it was a free dessert for “ anyone who has been like a mother to you”

where’s the issue here? I don’t see it.

I suppose I would ask why you're bothering someone working on the chat function of a chain restaurant and expecting them to give you a nuanced and reasoned answer.

user1471504747 · 02/06/2022 09:13

They’re probably paid minimum wage or not much more, won’t be the policy decider, and it’s not really their issue or their job..

If you feel there’s an element of discrimination take it up with the complaints department. They’ll probably be more able to escalate it to the appropriate people for you to get a straight answer, rather than someone on their live chat who usually answers questions about bookings and if there’s a gluten free menu

WeeBisom · 02/06/2022 09:23

A couple of years ago a supermarket was offering a free hot drink to men on Father’s Day. My mother knows the cafe workers and joked that she could just identity as a man. They said it her “sure , why not” and she got her free cup of tea.

It's a bit annoying that beer = for blokes and pudding = for the laydeez.

I would far rather have a beer - in fact if I am out with family I often order another pint while they are having puddings!

(I realise that's not the point of the thread)

I thought this too Grin if there’s anything to be upset about here it’s probably the gender stereotypes attached to the offer really

Exactly. I'm no fan of Prosecco, either. Hate the assumption that women should automatically like sweet, sparkly things.

But Tania 64 said trans men aren't excluded.

What I mean is, I'd expect to see all over Twitter trans women saying that they were outraged, or saddened, or that it was literal violence, or whatever, at Bills offering women free stuff.
Whereas in this case, I don't see an outpouring of outrage on SM from trans men.

RJnomore1 · 02/06/2022 09:52

Yep I get the stereotype issue!

Svara · 02/06/2022 09:53

If it's for mothers/fathers day then lone parents should qualify for both

It seems that transmen are included. It's potentially transwomen and AMAB non-binary people with pre-transition children who may feel excluded - it's their day because they're fathers, but they may not want to accept a beer that's for men. The pudding day is more inclusive, since anyone can be "like a mother" to someone else.

In reality, though, I'm sure they'll serve anyone who's willing to say they're a man. Even Patrick Harvie reportedly can't reliably detect non-men 100% of the time.

Its probably 1 free beer with a meal purchase, like they give out glasses of cava to women on mothers day.

Really couldn't get het up about this tbh.
