Free beer for men at Bills' restaurant

Bills are offering free beer to men for Father's day. I asked them on their live chat if Transmen are included in the offer. The reply was 'it shouldn't be a problem'. So I replied 'ok so as Transmen are bio women are all bio women included in the offer in line with equality?' The answer 'I'm not sure but we do consider all of our customers to be equal'. As this appears as a politicians reply & does not answer my question I have sent them an e mail with my question. I await the reply.Any thoughts?

It’s only because we saw the hooha at Mother’s Day when companies offered things ‘for mums’.

notmyrightsasaurus · 02/06/2022 14:24

If Bill's restaurant think that TWAW I'll be adding them to my boycott list

PrelateChuckles · 02/06/2022 14:26

Yes, I agree sara.

notmyrightsasaurus · 02/06/2022 14:28

it devalues the cause to create a ruckus over a free beer offer.

I disagree, the more we bring attention to these companies the more likely the MSN will pick up the story which helps the sunlight flood in for their readers.

Reallyreallyborednow · 02/06/2022 14:33

I thought this too Grin if there’s anything to be upset about here it’s probably the gender stereotypes attached to the offer really

but if you prefer beer you must have a man brain so are trans according to the ideology. If you like sweet and sparkly prosecco you are clearly a woman.

so get up there and claim your manly beer!

Workquestion12 · 02/06/2022 14:46

With the greatest respect, it's Bills...poor person who had the deal with this query. 🙄

Darkorangebiscuit · 02/06/2022 15:09

If enough of us contact them they'll probably put out a statement.

bills-website.co.uk/contact/

I've been scouring their website and it mentions that they have accessible toliets but no mention of their toilets being single sex so it's probably worth asking that too when you contact them.

miltonj · 02/06/2022 15:14

This is such a non issue and such a strange thing to get worked up about. It makes us as GC people look so weird and argumentative. Can we stick to fighting for women and girls safety?

Making sure their toilets are single sex and that this policy is adhered to is fighting for women and girls safety.

miltonj · 02/06/2022 15:41

@Darkorangebiscuit yes that's fine, but this post isn't about single sex spaces (which I agree with) it's about free beer on Father's Day!!!

A couple of years ago a supermarket was offering a free hot drink to men on Father’s Day. My mother knows the cafe workers and joked that she could just identity as a man. They said it her “sure , why not” and she got her free cup of tea.

Surely this is the point. If they want to offer a "free drink to men" on Father's Day (itself a weird concept as not all men are fathers) then they need to define the word "man" and have a policy to determine who are actually men, and who are lying about being men in order to get a free drink.

Otherwise it is not a free drink for men, it's free drink for anyone who wants a free drink, and they are misrepresenting their promotion and they might be committing sex discrimination against women by implying that they are less entitled to the free drink than men are.

GCRich · 02/06/2022 16:32

Just to clarify that sex discrimination point - if the free drink is for anyone who claims to be a man then it is a free drink for anyone who wants it, but men are more likely to identify as a man and therefore women are being discriminated against.

CuriousCatfish · 02/06/2022 16:36

What a load of nonsense this thread is. The live chat person was probably rolling her eyes and thinking there's always one, it must be a MNetter.

Oh don't be a dick. If you really want a free beer you can present as a trans man and go and get one - you've been told that's ok. Otherwise just leave it be - it's not really got anything to do with you.

I don't think this helps the gender critical camp though - quite the opposite.

It is more likely to make Bills think that they need to pander to people with special identities for an easy life.

GCRich · 02/06/2022 17:10

Obviously there are much bigger issues, but there is such a thing as principals.

I would like to know that Bill's are doing "the right thing", which is, IMHO, to have a scientifically accurate definition of the word "man" and not serve women the free drink.

If, however, they are using the word "man" in a Stonewall approved way then two very important things. (1) They need to know that they are idiots. (2) they need to know that the only meaningful way that they can determine whether someone is entitled to a free drink is whether they say "I am a man - free drink please". And if that is the policy then I think that they should make sure that they inform all women who enter the premises of the fact so that gender conforming women don't miss out on free drinks offered to gender non-conforming women.

TheBiologyStupid · 02/06/2022 17:12

As long as Bills' (never heard of them) do the same or similar on Mother's Day I don't see the problem? Although this could be an occasion when self-id could come in handy, I suppose!

KPem · 02/06/2022 17:17

Has anyone brought this to JKR's attention?

If she tweeted about it then it would probably be picked up by the Daily Mail, Talkradio, GB News etc.

TheBiologyStupid · 02/06/2022 17:18

Svara · 02/06/2022 09:53

If it's for mothers/fathers day then lone parents should qualify for both

Definitely!

The vast majority of people employed by Bills are minimum wage wait staff. They really can do without having to field this entirely unnecessary pettiness from people like you.

Also its principles, not principals.
And people who say "but it's the principle of the thing" are almost always fighting an unnecessary battle and losing sight of what actually matters.

saraclara · 02/06/2022 17:29

Seriously, why do you feel that they have to justify this to you?

I imagine she has better things to do than tweet about free Father’s Day beer.

This thread is absurd and I generally consider myself GC

LemonPalmTree · 02/06/2022 17:52

Once again astounded at the small minded petty thinking of some MN posters when it comes to trans issues

Musomama1 · 02/06/2022 18:07

Surely this is a cue for a group of female GC legends to sport beards, storm Bills and declare they are men for that day...?

Just an idea.

Go on! It would be brilliant.
