MI6

I think there is so much to worry about with Ukraine, I wasn't expecting this statement from MI6 about freedoms.... I think a whole society is at risk yet there is more pontificate and point scoring which suggest a 'wall influence.

Completely tone deaf

MI6

Literally fiddling while Rome burns. What an inappropriate, incompetent-looking and heartless tweet.

Haven’t the UK security services got a very long list of many urgent and better things to be doing given the inevitable covert war that is currently being waged against Ukraine and its allies, including in the UK?

That tweet shows such a lapse of professional judgement and leadership, and such a cowed, muddleheaded response to an anti-democratic, threatening and silencing ‘#nodebate’ political lobby in the UK. It actually damages public confidence in the organisation.

And if it's a leadership response to a work culture issue internally, and not just a personal cause for this individual to promote, then that’s really worrying. These government organisations are meant to be politically neutral. An effective MI6 would be a diverse one that supports women. Not flying the flag for male privilege while Ukrainian civilians are being bombed and attacked and forced to fight on the streets or leave their homes.

Slothtoes · 27/02/2022 05:34

He could have said (if he wants to explain), that, due to the ongoing devastation in the Ukraine by Putin’s forces and the urgent global security situation he is NOT going to resume his tweets on any topic other than that, out of respect. That he will instead focus his leadership efforts at work, on supporting and protecting those affected, which of course includes people of all protected characteristics..

That would be him in his very key role supporting democracy. Hopefully this tweet is part of a deliberate strategic ploy, so that the Russians underestimate MI6. Hmm

Not sure how to exactly comment on these two commentd, but at least it's in parts, more constructive analysis.

Are you marking our work? Cos our usual teacher always lets us work unsupervised and have free use of the internet to watch films. Honest.

FannyCann · 27/02/2022 07:03

Not to digress but I subscribe to a newsletter called HeyReprotech which comments on issues relating to ART. The journalist behind it emailed fertility clinics in Ukraine to find out what was going on the women mid process.

The reply, from one clinic, I think neatly encapsulates the appropriate response to our head of MI6.

"This morning, I got an email from Diana Donskaya, head of international marketing at Adonis, a large clinic and surrogacy provider, based in Kyiv:
Alison, my busyness is to protect my family and my country against russian aggression and artillery shelling and rockets from russia
War is our reality today. Try to understand
."

FannyCann · 27/02/2022 07:05

Bother. Bold fail.

That tweet about Stonewall points nails it. This is one of those ‘strong and visible leadership on LGBT+‘ virtual signalling statements for next year’s Workplace Equality Index submission dossier for sure. After I read about the Stonewall marking criteria a whole host of questionable choices by my previous employer’s leadership team fell into place for me.

ThatsNotMyGolem · 27/02/2022 07:21

@Hawkins001, welcome. Fancy a vodka?

aweegc · 27/02/2022 07:27

I think these kind of statements actually put our service men - possibly more than service women, because the sexual threat to them is more obvious - and spies in an altered kind of danger if captured. I realise the armed forces are not overtly engaged right now, however, his tweets will be read by his peers across the world. And remembered. And at some point, our armed forces will be fighting out there. Obvs spies are always active.

It's highly irresponsible.

If you're not following me, think of Abu Ghraib and what US soldiers did to humiliate "the enemy". If they'd had the head of MI6 equivalent spouting this kind of thing, no doubt they'd have been "creative" in different directions.

But of course, maybe they'd have just read the tweets and said, "Oh wow, what an enlightened society. Please, educate us so we can rid ourselves of our bigoted views."

Iwishihadariver · 27/02/2022 07:30

But it says a lot though and it's quite poetic in it's way

Whut? Wtf do you care what we write? Is it only good enough if we have a degree in warfare or something?

You are spectacularly missing the point. The reaction on Twitter is almost universal condemnation and ridicule. Whatever the intention of the tweet, it’s actual impact has been to embarrass our intelligence services. Given that it is reasonable to expect the Head of MI6/SIS to understand the importance of communications in influencing public mood, it is spectacularly ill judged.

Or that he's been hacked.

Or that it's a fake account

I'd go with the latter - because MI6 doesn't call itself MI6, its SIS

meditrina · 27/02/2022 08:41

Also, nothing on the official website to show there are any official social media accounts

(And I noticed that they so use term MI6 after all, but the main name is SIS and surely that's what they'd use on any real SM?)

littlbrowndog · 27/02/2022 08:50

It’s him.

And he did tweet that

Idiot

Whitefire · 27/02/2022 09:03

Is Richard Moore chief of security? Yes

Does the account have a blue tick? Yes

I'm going for it being him. Also the idea that it is a fake account is far more terrifying because if they can't control that what hope do we have as a nation.

meditrina · 27/02/2022 09:05

I managed to not spot the blue tick, which is rather silly of me.

Theluggage15 · 27/02/2022 09:08

I thinks it would actually worry a lot of people in this country, that at such a time as this, when you’d imagine MI6 is extremely busy keeping the country safe, the head is finding time to virtue signal. It’s not very reassuring and is completely tone deaf. I’m appalled by it.

highame · 27/02/2022 09:08

Do think, with all eyes on Ukraine, we must be extra vigilant re TRA's trying to get stuff under the radar. They have form

The account has a blue tick, that means its confirmed its him.

@Lovelyricepudding

I have often wondered if Russia was supporting/backing the LBGTQ+ behemoth in order to undermine western societies. When, in the face of an aggressive military invasion right on our doorstep, the head of MI6 posts tweets like this it suggests Putin was successful.
Oh for goodness sakes. This sort of comment is pretty crass. The rights of LGB and probably various other letters of the alphabet have quite clearly been seriously eroded/destroyed in Russia under Putin and doubtless would be in Ukraine if the Russians take it over.

The tweet may have been foolish but 'liberal values' are a large part of what sets us apart from the likes of Russia.

RobinMoiraWhite · 27/02/2022 09:27

Maybe shock / horror it’s because MI6 really value what a diverse workforce brings to the important work they do.
