Having been let down by Stewart Lee I wondered if anyone knows how Dylan Moran stands on gender woowoo? I have tickets to see him soon...

Just to add to the discussion is how some well known atheists (Matt Dilahunty and Mr Atheist/Jimmy Snow) have fallen for TWAW.

They say magic words cannot change a cracker into a bit of a body, yet they push the magic words making a man a woman.

@Featuredcreature

Oh god, fuck them all, insulated wokey blokes. I went to see Ross noble last year and he didn't say anything either way tbh. He was good too. Richard herring is kind of amorphous too, I haven't heard him say anything egregious about jk, he seems to avoid the issue if possible.
He's said he thinks TWAW bu accepts that others have a different point of view. You know, like an actual adult.
ScreamingMeMe · 11/02/2022 08:40

@TooBigForMyBoots

What do you want in a comedian *@billydilly*? Someone who makes you laugh? Or someone who agrees with you?
I think i depends. I don't want to go and see a comedian who goes an a sneery rant about terfs as lart of their act. So I'd avoid Stuart Lee.

However I went to see Nish Kumar last year. He's very much TWAW and ver leftwing (which I no longer consider myself) but apart from calling himself cis gender and mentioning transphobia a couple of times, it wasn't a big deal. He still made me laugh a lot.

Tree543 · 11/02/2022 08:48

@Carriemac

My favourite Dylan Moran show remains How Do You Want Me (RIP Charlotte Coleman, Emma Chambers, and Frank Finlay) I loved this show too, though how weird that they are all dead now?
I loved this too. Will be disappointed if DM is TWAW.
WinterTrees · 11/02/2022 10:25

I don't see it as a matter of only wanting to expose myself to people with the same opinions as me, but being really put off by people who use their platform for aggressive anti-women rhetoric, or mocking and shaming feminists.

I'm guessing that few Jewish people will now be buying tickets for Jimmy Carr's shows, or people from the GRT community. I'm guessing that Jim Davidson's audience is mostly made up of white people. For similar reasons I would avoid Stewart Lee, Josie Long, Marcus Brigstocke, Nish Kumar, Rosie Jones and all the rest of the people who have joyfully signalled their willingness to shame women for standing up for the rights they won after generations of relentless struggle and lives lost.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 11/02/2022 10:36

I deliberately go and see comedians that I don't agree with at the Fringe.

Reginald D Hunter is a misogynist - but he makes it funny.
Frankie Boyle, the early years - absolutely vile, but brutally funny. Lost it now.

What I LOATHE is an insipid comedian repeating a mantra and getting an obligatory round of applause from the obedient audience because the Cultural Revolution demands that we all believe TWAW and we all hate TERFS. It's not funny. It's not even hack, it's not a joke, so get it out your set and write a joke.

I went to see Jen Ives last year, "Peak Terf". I won't be rude about someone's work, but I will say that it struck me it was the only show at the venue which didn't sell out.

I'm rather looking forward to seeing what Mary Bourke does at Edinburgh. A full hour of GC stuff from her would be fantastic.

This.

HoyaSaxa · 11/02/2022 11:26

Very pleased to hear that Tim Minchin has not swallowed the gender woo. I always get the impression that he respects women.

Al Murray - anyone who is interested in history and hosts a podcast about the Second World War surely won’t have a huge amount of truck with sending male sex offenders into women’s prisons. Also I know this is tangential but he’s been on The Rest is History, and the co- host of that Dominic Sandbrooke is very GC.

Letsnotargue · 11/02/2022 11:26

We saw Dylan Moran a couple of years ago in Edinburgh, and wished we hadn’t. I can’t remember any of the content of his show, just that he seemed bemused about why he was there, forgot half of his jokes/stories half way through… it was sad and if he hadn’t spent a lot of the act talking about drinking herbal tea as he didn’t drink anymore I’d have thought he was recovering from the previous nights hangover. I wish we’d just been left with the memories of when he was good tbh.

Ducksareruiningmypatio · 11/02/2022 12:10

I'm so upset at what Eddie Izzard has become.
I used to love him Sad
I had to unfollow him. I avoid things with him in, he just annoys me so much now.
He's very much male when it suits him and it's to his advantage. Fuck. Off.

Same here. What happened to "These are not women's clothes. I bought them. These are my clothes."

How the hell do you go from that to saying you have a "girl mode" and wearing fake breasts?

I meant Mark Watson not Mark Wilson. I doubt he's on MN but sorry anyway.

Babdoc · 11/02/2022 17:45

Damn, this is depressing. I have already bought a ticket for Moran’s tour this year, on the strength of loving his “Black
books” series. I may have to walk out of the show if he starts on any misogynist twaw crap.

MaChienEstUnDick · 11/02/2022 17:45

If you get the chance to see Simon Evans show The Work of the Devil you should. Talking about the content will spoil the show but its about identity but tackled intelligently, though it does start off quite Daily Mail. It made me think a lot, which I like.

MaChienEstUnDick · 11/02/2022 17:47

I saw a few comics this year though and literally all their acts were 'oh isn't working from home hard, my wife's got a really annoying voice.' Saw thing at the Fringe with four comics all doing the same riff. Could have spent a few hours on MN and got the same jokes for free, tbh.

itispersonal · 11/02/2022 17:55

I wasn't too sure about Tim Michin when I went to see him in Blackpool. I think this song 'shame' sums up cancel society and he does talk about the left purists and any degree of difference you are shamed. He also mentioned if you return to an argument just calling someone a bigot, you've lost the argument. But he made a comment about JK which I thought was ambiguous, but I could have just misunderstood! Especially as a recent Instagram post of the Australian religious rights bill shows he's a moderate leftie.

A friend knew him at that stage and still felt that he was very much on a power trip, she disliked him a lot. Shame as I used to go and see him in his early days and found him absolutely hilarious, and so inventive.
Igmum · 12/02/2022 07:17

Ben Elton is GC. Saw him on tour a few years ago. Totally recommend. I gather that his latest books also take up the issue

NecessaryScene · 12/02/2022 07:47

Is it kind of the modern equivalent of the mother-in-law joke? I do get the same vibe from these Wokoid comedians as I did from lazy 70s/80s comedians. Not actually exploring anything thoughtfully.

There was a reason so-called "alternative comedy" (like the aforementioned Ben Elton) arose in the 80s.

Santiagopink · 12/02/2022 07:52

Saw John bishop recently. No trans stuff in his show but early on in the set there was a very vocal, loud transwoman in the audience so JB engaged with them and rather than take the piss as per the usual way of dealing with hecklers he did the whole stunningvand brave congratulations then said fuck JK. Got a big cheer. Ruined the night for me but actually there was very little that was funny in the set anyway. Just lots of misogyny and old man jokes. Total waste of money.

SingToTheSky · 12/02/2022 08:39

That’s so disappointing, I love Black Books and saw DM live in the 00s. He was great. I’m amazed he’s fallen for the woo, or that he’s lying to protect himself - I thought he was one who wouldn’t give a shit what people thought of him.

Saw Ross Noble last night as it happens, he was a bit more offensive and made more political references than I remember (saw him in the 00s) but didn’t reference trans stuff or gender in general. He did make a comment in response to heckling “oi! I’m trying to be woke here” :o

Lottapianos · 12/02/2022 09:10

'JB engaged with them and rather than take the piss as per the usual way of dealing with hecklers he did the whole stunningvand brave congratulations then said fuck JK.'

Nice. What a lazy smug way to get some woke cookies. Hope he's proud of himself

floralembroidery · 12/02/2022 09:20

Don't get why people are so keen to see comedians who are basically misogynists? I see enough comments on Twitter for free full of misogynistic crap, I don't feel the slightest inclination to actually pay someone to make those same comments, just because they're a 'name' comedian. Confused

I like my comedians to be funny. Misogyny isn't funny. Ergo I don't go to see misogynist comedians. Same reason I don't go to see racist comedians. I have no desire to be open minded about racism any more than I do about misogyny. AFAIC, normalising misogyny and financially rewarding misogynists for spreading anti-women propaganda is not something I want to be part of. Why would I pay to hear myself and women in general abused? Confused
