Feminist T-shirts you can usefully wear in Tesco

(Other grocery suppliers are available)

I’ve not generally been a slogan t-shirt wearer, but it turns out post Covid my off-duty style is evolving to be a lot more relaxed than it used to be! So I’ll now happily be in whatever comfywear whilst doing the shopping etc. I was thinking about the daily acts of feminism and planting seeds of ideas thing and thinking that wearing T-shirts with a thought-provoking feminist message on is a useful thing to do whilst shopping; if people see the message and they find it intriguing they may go away and find out more. Nothing offensive (not counting claimed offence at gender critical belief itself).

The feminist tshirts that I have aren’t really suitable - they are either just celebratory slogans (like courage calls to courage, I incite this meeting etc) or you have to be already in the know to get the relevance, like BirdyRose designs (my favourite Magdalen one is too sweary for polite company as well).

Has anyone got any feminist slogan apparel that would fit these criteria? Thought provoking for observers, not sweary, makes the point clearly?

Hope this all makes sense

I love the 'this witch doesn't burn' one.

Starlitexpress · 19/10/2021 20:03

I'm getting a dinosaur one!

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 19/10/2021 20:10

I'm in dire need of T-shirts that would not be deemed a provocation and would be suitable for general wear plus be thought-provoking.

donquixotedelamancha · 19/10/2021 20:17

I think the woman: adult human female shirt is really effective. Not least because it's probably the most popular feminist message people wear at the moment.

Cwenthryth · 19/10/2021 20:20

Dinosaurs are another reference for the in-crowd though, unless there is a clear caption to “explain” (that if people google it’d bring them to David Lammy’s accusations for example).

Things like “Lesbian Not Queer” for example, apart from
I’m not personally a lesbian so wouldn’t appropriate that.

BUT...you do need to check the orgins of some t-shirts as no point wearing one if the (mostly) women making them are earning fuck all! Spark company have a standard I think for the conditions of the people making the shirts.

The Wildwomyn ones (as worn by JK Rowling)

I like Birdy's too, got the Shrill Siren and dinosaur ones recently.

Btw complete tangent on the dinosaur thing but this was fucking hilarious, (highlighted on Twitter by our very own @RhymesWithOrange ) apparently us stoopid t**fs are using “trans dinosaurs” (ha!) as our secret signal, because the person that requested dinosaur emojis had Thoughts when they did so 😂

My favourite says:

"We are the granddaughters of the witches you weren't able to burn."

I've also got one that I wear to auditions that says: "Strong Female Lead", just to make sure they notice. Grin

RainbowCrossing · 19/10/2021 20:37

God complex much?

I'm a lesbian and don't appreciate it Grin HATE that word. Wish they still called us tribades! Adult human female could cause a few scraps I think. :( much as I'd love to wear one with that on. The transwomen are women crowd are prolific in the circles I move in at least :(
RainbowCrossing · 19/10/2021 20:42

I mean the 'Creator' of the dinosaurs.

I mean that person knows that dinosaurs are an actual physical thing right? The emojis aren't the thing? Isn't this really really basic Saussure? I would have thought any good little postmodernist would be able to do a bit of basic semiotics? Grin

MintMe · 19/10/2021 20:43

I have a Strong Female Lead hoodie which I'm happy to wear on the school run, I also have the sweary Birdy Rose/Magdalden t shirt which I wear on Teams calls if I'm feeling bold as you can't read the wording!

But the meaning of emojis evolves; you can't just stay stuck in the past and hold onto old-fashioned meanings! Emojis are becoming more inclusive all the time.

These are OFAB radfem adult dinosaur females now; they've been liberated!

Duno if it would work for walking round tesco but I have a bunch of various band t shirts (red bubble or etsy) that are bands or musicians I love but keep getting asked about and often lead into feminist discussion of some sort. Patti Smith one (v gnc) ‘girls to the front’ (bikini kills Kathleen Hannah used to start gigs yelling this- look it up) and plenty others.

This is being asked about them when buying coffee/paying at til/parents on school run/kids friends.

Ooh that's a good one! Have you got a link for it?

Ah sorry missed your explanation!
JoborPlay · 19/10/2021 21:15

I have this. I don't rate the fit much though so don't wear it as often as I like.

I love the stickers on one of those sites.
'Hello my pronouns are:
Her ladyship'

or
'Hello my pronouns are:
Fuck/right/off'

some good stuff on these sites.
I haven't felt this passionately about women's rights since back as a teen when my classmates called me 'Milly Tant' - this time it's one helluva a fight to stop the erosion of our rights.

SusannaRowan · 19/10/2021 21:22

Hoping the dinosaur thing doesn't take off, my teenage daughter loves them, has lots of dinosaur clothes, she'd never be able to wear them again (we've already had this happen with Harry Potter). She is GC, but not strong enough to stand up to her peers.

SusannaRowan · 19/10/2021 21:24

Quite like - "This girl just wants to have FUNdamental rights"!

LurkyMcLurcker · 19/10/2021 21:24

I have a few - have always loved slogan t-shirts

My current favourite reads "delicate, like the male ego"

I also have "seize the day with the unearned confidence of a mediocre white man" which I love but is too wordy really

SusannaRowan · 19/10/2021 21:31

Also tempted by, "Women don't owe you sht" and the witchy "In with the wrong crowd" from Wildwomyn.

Motorina · 19/10/2021 21:39

Just a heads up - the Birdy Rose ones are lovely, but the female fit come up TINY.

RainbowCrossing · 19/10/2021 22:06

Ha ha @PaleGreenGhost that would look good on a T-shirt!
