Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Feminist T-shirts you can usefully wear in Tesco

(Other grocery suppliers are available)

I’ve not generally been a slogan t-shirt wearer, but it turns out post Covid my off-duty style is evolving to be a lot more relaxed than it used to be! So I’ll now happily be in whatever comfywear whilst doing the shopping etc. I was thinking about the daily acts of feminism and planting seeds of ideas thing and thinking that wearing T-shirts with a thought-provoking feminist message on is a useful thing to do whilst shopping; if people see the message and they find it intriguing they may go away and find out more. Nothing offensive (not counting claimed offence at gender critical belief itself).

The feminist tshirts that I have aren’t really suitable - they are either just celebratory slogans (like courage calls to courage, I incite this meeting etc) or you have to be already in the know to get the relevance, like BirdyRose designs (my favourite Magdalen one is too sweary for polite company as well).

Has anyone got any feminist slogan apparel that would fit these criteria? Thought provoking for observers, not sweary, makes the point clearly?

Hope this all makes sense

The Tate Shop has a guerilla girls one which are the kind of thing you're talking about, although art specific so a bit niche.

Less seriously, I love my 'On Wednesday we smash the patriarchy' t shirt. Etsy I think.

Cwenthryth · 20/10/2021 10:10

Things like “Woman Up” that subvert sexist tropes are definitely feminist and just gently highlight the background misogyny in our culture. DP has one from manwhohasitall that says “Not Just A Pretty Beard”.

I feel like being more direct at the moment though.

[quote risefromyourgrave]I adore this quote, and the colour is lovely too!

That’s a stunning colour. I’ve got the pin badge with that quote which is bonny and they also have lots of lovely suffragette pins.

daisyjgrey · 20/10/2021 11:21

My 11 year old has one that says "On Wednesdays we smash the patriarchy".

Just wanted to add the gorgeous Black and Beech to this list. I have her ‘A mother’s place is in the resistance’ sweat. I’ll add a link if I can figure it out…

Birdy has a "Help! She's thinking thoughts I don't like." T shirt , it's subtle enough to stealth feminist through Tesco in.

@Beowulfa thank you for reminding me of Wave of Nostalgia - daughter and I are off to Haworth one day next week!

Terfydactyl · 20/10/2021 16:28

Oh I love haworth. I must go there soon and buy lots of things. This year for Christmas I'm making a dino list on etsy. All the dinosaur rights all the time, umm well, a dino hat and pin and tshirt and bag.
I'm so proud of us all and David lammy? Was it who called us rights hoarding dinosaurs and gave us a fabulous image to connect with others without getting into bother.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 20/10/2021 17:02

@Cwenthryth

Btw complete tangent on the dinosaur thing but this was fucking hilarious, (highlighted on Twitter by our very own *@RhymesWithOrange ) apparently us stoopid t*fs are using “trans dinosaurs” (ha!) as our secret signal, because the person that requested dinosaur emojis had Thoughts when they did so 😂
The opposition have tried to stop us using anything we come up with - to no avail, but they keep on trying.

They didn't like us having the genderfree/checkered flag (YOU CAN'T BE GENDERFREE! YOU'RE CIS! YOU CAN'T JUST DECLARE YOURSELF TRANS!)

They didn't like us using the 'STOP' red card/square (Hey guys, everyone put a red square in their name! All the **s do it & that'll confuse them!)

They didn't like us using Suffragette colours (That's the XYZ flag, stop appropriating! Suffragettes wanted rights for everyone, not just women - they'd be ashamed of you! Trans people got women their rights! etc)

Now they don't like us using David Lammy's words with humour (It's a trans dinsoaur! If you put it in your name that means you support trans! - seen on twitter several times this very day before I gave up with a sigh & a sore BLOCK finger)

It seems to amount to: Women! Shut up!

To which women eternally shout back: off!

ifIwerenotanandroid · 20/10/2021 17:05

Oops, got caught by the asterisks (painful...)

Last line could be:

To which women eternally shout back: &&&& off!

I've always thought that "love cock, hate patriarchy" would be a good slogan, but then I am very vulgar.

How about 'No wise in our excess'

Wigglegiggle0520 · 20/10/2021 18:14

@SusannaRowan @GAHgamel

Thanks for the explanation!

@Mollyollydolly

I love the 'this witch doesn't burn' one.
Thanks Molly, you've just reminded me to order this one! Smile

I’m swithering about getting “A Woman’s Place is on top” t-shirt. They were sold to fund the first all woman’s expedition to summit Annapurna (10th highest peak in the world). After the successful summit they funded female climbers who didn’t get the same opportunities to climb as men. This was criticised for excluding funding to the best climbers- men.

Im not a climber, but I like the t-shirt.

@WallaceinAnderland, can you possibly explain 'No wise in our excess'? Thanks!

No Ys in our Xs

Redbubble sell face masks in suffragette colours (if you're in an area still using masks or if England goes back to mask wearing).

Oh wow I'm having this printed. I want this. Never a more true statement would adorn my body.

Fabulous, love it. Gonna get it printed on a t or bag real soon.

Couchbettato · 20/10/2021 22:20

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal

My favourite says:

"We are the granddaughters of the witches you weren't able to burn."

I've also got one that I wear to auditions that says: "Strong Female Lead", just to make sure they notice. Grin

Ooft, we are the granddaughters of witches you weren't able to burn. I heard this on a Button Poetry video or something very similar and it resonated with me so hard.

Here are two Aussie sites but their T-shirts are brilliant. I have these shirts myself.

Literal Violets
#ManFriday

are great.

DP bought a Literal Violets tee-shirt because he doesn't give a fuck (well he does, but about me and his daughters and my daughter and other people's daughters) and I didn't get one because I want to design my own which of course I'll never get round to ...
