John Lewis and it’s ‘gender relaxed’ ad

Curious to hear thoughts on the new ad from John Lewis. It strikes me as sinister. Why does a small child have to send out a message of LGBTQ equality? Why is he acting like a drag queen.

More importantly what has any of his extremely destructive behaviour got to do with insurance and why is this child being allowed to destroy the house and wreck the girls painting after throwing an umbrella at her whilst the adult does nothing

YABU not to post a link in your opening post.

Here it is:

KingofQueens · 11/10/2021 20:21

What's it got to do with LGBTQ+ equality? It's a boy being annoying making a mess. He's not acting like a drag queen. There's nothing sinister about it.
I thought we were supposed to embrace children wearing what they like, and move away from rigid fender stereotypes?

KingofQueens · 11/10/2021 20:22

Obviously I meant gender, not fender. Nothing to do with guitars.

gluteustothemaximus · 11/10/2021 20:22

Absolute bunch of bollucks. Not the boy dressing up as a girl, but the utter destruction of the house. Little shit.

Rightsraptor · 11/10/2021 20:23

Looks like incomprehensible male behaviour to me.

But surely insurance doesn't usually cover you for wilful damage, which this looks to be? Spoilt boy goes round the house trashing it and nobody stops him. Tell that to the insurance company and see if they wear it.

MrMrsJones · 11/10/2021 20:27

Typical "boys will be boys" and stomp all over women and girls...

Hoardasurass · 11/10/2021 20:28

@rabbitwoman that is a rather disingenuous take on the advert the child in question is not just throwing glitter about but purposely rubbing paint into furniture and woodwork after throwing an umbrella at what I presume is supposed to be their sister and intentionally chucking her paint on the carpet and it's all good really.
Are we supposed to say that the bullying of a girl is OK or to be ignored

That was my first thought too! Completely rubbish ad for that alone.

Plus JLP home insurance is ridiculously expensive (at least, my last quote was).

Iusedtoliveinsanfrancisco · 11/10/2021 20:30

Highly misleading- no insurance company would pay out.

FrownedUpon · 11/10/2021 20:31

It’s a horrible advert & leaves me feeling really uncomfortable for the girl.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 11/10/2021 20:33

God it's awful. Basically saying let your spoilt little brat do what he wants.

TheUndeadLovelinessOfDemons · 11/10/2021 20:33

He's a boy wearing a dress. He's not acting like a drag queen. Although he's an obnoxious little shit and if he's NT he'd be in deep shit in this house.

SickAndTiredAgain · 11/10/2021 20:35

That was my thought as well.

He’s behaving like a brat while the mum just watches on silently. Weird advert.

Yeah I'd really like to call John Lewis and tell them my kid has wrecked my house because he was expressing himself and will they pay out?

Actually mine is up for renewal. I might just ring them and ask.

But yes, male entitlement. Man trashes house. Women cower.

Not a great message.

littlbrowndog · 11/10/2021 20:36

Why’s that wee boy pouting at the camera in a sexual manner

Fucking dreadful

3peassuit · 11/10/2021 20:36

If that was my kid, I’d cancel his Christmas.

You watched it. The pouting

Dreadful

FreeBritnee · 11/10/2021 20:38

I quite like that ad 😳

SingingSands · 11/10/2021 20:38

Jeez. It's not insurance that mum in the advert needs, it's Supernanny.

PattiPritell · 11/10/2021 20:41

OMG I have faithfully bought from JL rather than other options throughout lockdown and now have bought Xmas stuff but if they keep this up I'm off to Amazon.

RocketPanda · 11/10/2021 20:41

Boy goes around destroying the house and ruining furniture, a girl who is quietly getting on with her painting is disrupted and her experience is ruined and no one does anything to stop him. Insurance won't pay out and the parents don't learn this until its too late and the damage is done.
Hmmmmmmm. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

I'd love to hear John Lewis story behind the development of this ad, and what they think they are portraying.

All I see is a boy dressed in his mums clothes and make up, trashing the house and being a shit to his sister. And why is there no dad in the ad? Why are mum and sister represented as having to tolerate this nonsense - as 'let life happen'.

There might be a few people I'd call - but my home insurer isn't one of them.
