Curious to hear thoughts on the new ad from John Lewis. It strikes me as sinister. Why does a small child have to send out a message of LGBTQ equality? Why is he acting like a drag queen.

@KittenKong

I wonder what their Christmas ad will be? I assume it’s being frantically reviewed right now...
Grin

Elf is firmly on the Shelf, I presume.

mustlovegin · 27/10/2021 16:33

Some of the comments on Facebook are terrifyingly obtuse

God knows who's managing their SM accounts. Going by what's happened with this ad, I doubt JL are being very prescriptive as to how they should or shouldn't respond

ArabellaScott · 27/10/2021 16:35

@BatmansBat

Does this mean that I can’t have a cup of tea and just watch when my children are trashing the place? Safe in the knowledge that JL insurance will pay?

Gutted.

If you bought the insurance before they email you to tell you that children wilfully destroying the house aren't covered, you might have a case.
JemimaTab · 27/10/2021 16:41

In their latest statement, John Lewis are saying you’d have to buy an additional add-on to cover “accidental (not deliberate)” damage. But they STILL don’t say whether this would cover what the kid is doing in the ad.

DadDadDad · 27/10/2021 16:41

@mustlovegin

That is good news... but not necessarily for all the right reasons. But still

JL's management are not stupid, and at least this will teach them to scrutinise more closely what advertising agencies propose as opposed to giving them free rein. The agencies may be working to agendas which may be very different to those of the companies who employ them. It would be desirable that other businesses got the message also

When it comes to selling a financial product, they seem to have been particularly negligent - it should not just have been JL management signing this off. I work in insurance, and we all know that we need to take compliance very seriously. At some point, this ad should have been signed-off by the compliance department of the insurance company underwriting the policy.

It might be a pain but compliance are there to protect the company from breaking FCA rules and risking a fine and reputational damage!

BatmansBat · 27/10/2021 16:42

Sadly I haven’t got that insurance yet.

I am in the middle of half term and it increasingly sounded like something to amuse the DCs whilst I had some time out.

Alas, not to be Sad.

So pleased to hear this news! It’s so worrying that it got through each stage of approval. Wtf are these John Lewis employees on?!

ArtemesiaK · 27/10/2021 18:57

My DH takes Private Eye. I can guarantee he will have no idea what that cartoon is about.... :)
Lucky he has me to explain things....

Exactly my question. Such appalling judgement. How on earth can they run a business.
madisonbridges · 27/10/2021 19:02

It was just a bad advert. It was irritating to watch someone trash a house and then JL make out that they'd cover the costs. I don't know what JL was thinking!

KittenKong · 27/10/2021 19:03

So if they add are pulled - what happens to the airtime they have bought?

APerson44 · 27/10/2021 22:19

The way they finally clarified that they cover accidental and not intentional damage, yet on YouTube we're throwing out statements backing themselves up before it was pulled. Do one John Lewis, I will not be Buying ANYTHING from you again and my last purchase was £900

Bellusaurus · 28/10/2021 00:53

I enjoyed the Guardian summary:

It first ran on 11 October and featured a young boy dressed in his mother’s makeup, dress, jewellery and heels ...

What's with the assumption the makeup, dress, jewellery and heels weren't his father's? The Guardian gets more terfy by the day Grin

APerson44 · 28/10/2021 10:29

They are Stonewall partners and the colours worn in the video are trans not terf. In that statement they may be speaking to teans parenthood. Who knows at this point, it's easy to get drowned in political agendas these days!

KittenKong · 28/10/2021 10:43

Parenthood is parenthood. No kid gets a free pass to trash the house surely?

APerson44 · 28/10/2021 13:04

Absolutely

wigglerose · 28/10/2021 13:20

I think they tried to re-do their Tiny Dancer advert from a few years ago but failed miserably.

Helleofabore · 28/10/2021 13:25

Wigglerose if that was the case, they 'Riverdaled' it, if you know what I mean.

wigglerose · 28/10/2021 15:02

@helleofabore Sorry I don't.

Anyway, here is the advert:

I'm not terribly keen on some of the dance moves, but it has a lot more heart than the recent advert. The brother's reaction is spot on.

ginghamstarfish · 28/10/2021 15:10

Just saw in the news that they have pulled this ad and contacted all their insurance customers to clarify that damage caused by such action will not be covered. What a bunch of idiots, can't believe someone got paid for this.

KittenKong · 28/10/2021 15:15

“Yeah, we’re, like, gonna do this ad - but like sell way we don’t sell, ya?”

Helleofabore · 28/10/2021 15:19

Riverdale is a quite a 'grown up' version of the Archie comics that was shown on Netflix.

This was a 'grown up' dance compared to the girl blissfully dancing along.

wigglerose · 28/10/2021 15:52

@helleofabore yes then

Lovelyricepudding · 28/10/2021 17:14

A metaphor for the transgender movement?
SparklyDino · 28/10/2021 18:12

Wooo hoooo came straight here to celebrate! I don't care how's he's dressed but the way he wilfully wrecks the house and his sister's pictures, just gave me the rage!
