Wish I knew which rights I was 'hoarding'.

@HeadPain

They've all been 'trained'
It's turning out to be very poor value for money.
Theendoftheworldisnigh · 27/09/2021 23:20

To be fair to him, there do seem to be more than twice as many "black British" women MPs than men MPs. And that's in the context of the majority of MPs being men. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_minority_politicians_in_the_United_Kingdom

Theendoftheworldisnigh · 27/09/2021 23:22

@Imnobody4

He also spoke in support of “a degree of positive discrimination” to help increase the number of black men in the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP). He said Labour has historically been “too slow” to understand the structural barriers preventing the selection and election of black men, and called on the party to do “considerably more”. Oh dear.
Why not consider the fact that there are far more black British women than black British men in the House of Commons?
RedToothBrush · 27/09/2021 23:29

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

Does anyone know what % of Labour voters are women? If we went back to 1997 for example?
2019 breakdown

1997 (inc % change from 1992 election)
Gender
Men Con 31% (-14%) Lab 45% (+8%) LD 17% (-1%) Other 7%
Women Con 32% (-12%) Lab 44% (+9%) LD 18% (0%) Other 6%

I've said this previously. Labour are targeting the women's vote primarily to get extra votes. But at the same time making a point of attacking older women.

Older women are more likely to vote Con to begin with, and there are far less votes to be gained in younger women because they already vote Labour (if they vote - they are less likely to vote if younger).

So either they think that this will appeal to sexist males or they are making demographically stunted political decisions which don't reflect real world views and voting patterns.

If this issue keeps coming up as a priority for the party over other subjects, such as minimum wage, its hard to see where they will gain new votes from.

Right when the Tories are facing multiple crisis.

But doesn't Lanny think black people's rights should be protected (quite rightly, I might add)? Why not women's?

"Hoarding" rights. What shite. You either win and have rights, or you don't. If you have them, why would you concede them? And who is he to choose whose rights matter, and whose don't?

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2021 23:34

He is giving away the rights of others not his own, in a trojan horse comparison with white supremacy.

This is based on the sexist assumption that women have privilege over transwomen. And forgets all the reasons why single sex provision was brought in to begin with and why women are discriminated and harmed on the basis of sex.

But yep, its just like racism...

Frikkin' idiot.

Franklin12 · 27/09/2021 23:36

They aren’t having a great conference are they? So they think this makes people sit and think ‘Labour has changed, I like what they are saying now Corbyn has gone’

Even McDonnell was slagging off his own party AT THEIR OWN CONFERENCE!

EarthSight · 27/09/2021 23:40

And they're all on the right, aren't they? Because then those women are much easier to demonise.

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2021 23:43

Emily Thornberry somehow 'defended' Angela Rayners 'scum' comment by saying Rayner was drunk!

I thought that pretty special.

BBC Politics @BBCPolitics
“There may have been drink partaken… people just need to know the atmosphere”

Labour MP Emily Thornberry says Angela Rayner “probably should not have said scum” when describing the Tory government, but does not need to retract the comments

Fucking amazing.

Rayner herself clearly has ambitions to become leader and presumably PM.

I await her getting tipsy at an international conference of some sort and telling foreign dignitaries she isn't keen on them, in similar terms...

Height of professionalism and height of shit excuse making/dig making from Thornberry.

Honestly, message isn't getting through on policy - just who you dislike.

Clymene · 27/09/2021 23:44

Fuck off David

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 27/09/2021 23:47

Thanks Red. Just wondering what the impact might be. Not that they stand a chance of getting to government anyway.

It depends on what happens of course but you can't help but think this ideological path is just going to alienate the over 40s and thats where they need to be making gains on votes most.

Older age groups are less affected by employment issues / fuel issues and are on higher wages too.

So quite a bit of a paradox there.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 27/09/2021 23:56

Surely they know this Confused John Crace in the Guardian was talking about them wondering why they were losing votes and yet they carry on alienating the people who did vote for them.

Well, you'd think.

However.

Mollyollydolly · 28/09/2021 00:13

It's amazing to me how many political commentators still don't see this as an issue. Peston was blathering on last night that Starmer was having a good conference after getting rule changes through. I mean from my viewpoint it's been an absolute disaster.
For clever people they seem very thick.

Enough4me · 28/09/2021 00:15

We can extend it from rights to possessions. I confess I'm a hoarder of women's things like a mooncup and bras. Really should be kind and share them with TW with breasts and vagin... ah, oh maybe not.

Women's rights, like some of women's possessions, serve a specific purpose for women.

Imagine if half of those black women MPs transitioned tomorrow. If someone then came along and said not only “Hey David, now there are more black male MPs than female, so we don’t need any extra black male representation any more”; but then it also turned out that these new “men” were considered much more marginalised and deserving than the “old” men, I wonder whether Lammy would think that was OK…?

LoislovesStewie · 28/09/2021 05:42

BTW This is the man who won a scholarship to The King's School Peterborough. A Grammar School attached to the Cathedral it was originally a boarding school for boys and only became an academy in 2011. Pupils have to show some religious leanings to get into the school. People who attend this school even now, are beyond lucky, most kids wouldn't get a look in. Mr Lammy would have had to attend church regularly to be offered a place and IMHO was privileged to attend. Sorry, but I think that him lecturing on 'hoarding rights' is despicable.

DoraMaude · 28/09/2021 06:24

I've never given a moment's time to anything David Lammy has to say since I saw his woeful performance on Mastermind. The man is as thick as mince.

To be perfectly honest, I'm watching with more and more dismay that most of them are.

Privilege apparently got them where they are, because they seem to be truly incapable.

At this point I want to sit this lot of absolute fools down and point out, in very small words, with pictures:

  • They are busy convincing the UK that trans rights and women's rights cannot co exist. It must be one or the other.

  • This essentially requires everyone to pick a side.

  • What do we think might be the consequence of that, boys and girls? Shall we think about the bit of the Equality Act that talks about not creating hostile environments and causing conflict between groups because that's obviously really, really stupid and unhelpful in a way the average four year old could grasp?

  • Anyone who actually cared about the TQ population, as opposed to just seeing a way to really enjoy letting their misogyny roll and watching women's reaction to this power trip under the guise of virtue, might possibly have the brains to think what may happen to this population when all this plays out over the next few weeks and months? What is this doing for the public image and perception of this group?

  • Let's think about the massive epidemic of violence against women and girls, shall we, that the politicians love to make concerned noises about? The spate of recent murders and the death of 2-3 women a week from domestic partners. The powerful men who are demonstrating to the general public that women and their lives and rights are just a football to kick around and a group you can enjoy publicly deriding and dehumanising are creating and nurturing the culture in which this violence happens.

  • It's no good whining Not All Men, David. Heard it. Too many times.

  • How, you absolute numpties, are you doing anything but major harm to pretty much everyone in your happy little bubble?

He's not so well versed in the ways of the Catholic religion. His 'pope' tweet was an absolute classic.

@ScribblingPixie, he might be well-educated, but, based on that he is lacking in common sense.

Eh? He thought BBC speculation on the colour of the smoke was speculation on the colour of the next pope??

Dear god.

Fariha31 · 28/09/2021 12:12

Maybe David can explain to Rachel Dolzeal how he is not 'rights hording?'
