It’s not SELF indulgent, because it’s everyone else having to do the indulging! Pronouns are for use by other people when referring to you.

I think the thing that fucks me off the most about this (among many things that fuck me off a great deal) is the wording 'I use the pronouns...'. No. You don't use them. You demand that everyone else use them.
As far as I'm concerned, the only sensible answer to the question 'what pronouns do you use?' is 'it depends what I'm referring to'.

These are people stuck in their teenage years. Limited intellectual, social and emotional development, no careers, limited social conscience or awareness of the global issues in the world, just an inordinate interest in their own narrow perspective.
They could all do with a stint of community service working with those struggling with poverty, abuse, poor housing, refugees, children with special needs, poor mental health and the rest.
After 6 months seeing the real challenges that people face in the world I suspect the self indulgent pronouns would be speedily abandoned.

Oh, I wouldn’t be so sure about that . I’m sure the demands for simultaneous pronouns are just around the corner. After all, the pop star Halsey had a fit when a magazine used the pronoun “she” when her requested pronouns were “she/her”!

@RoseisMadder it's right about sparking conversation though. A very young colleague of mine who is leaving soon but not nearly soon enough is the first of us to include her pronouns in her email signature and it caused my two colleagues to have the aforementioned T*RFY conversation.

I'm not sanguine though. The time will come when most of those in the management swim in my organisation will be doing this and only whiskery old holdouts like me will still be avoiding the issue. I've no doubt diversity training is on its way, to make sure that any genuine cultural diversity that deviates from Silicon Valley norms is stamped out.

Only the privileged and indulged have the time and head space to worry about pronouns. Can you imagine a single.mum.of 4 working 2 jobs and still having to choose between heating and food, even giving a shit what her work colleagues call her when she's not even there.

It is Whatwouldscullydo . I've infinite time for self absorbed teenagers fretting about this stuff - they're so often the centre of their own universes, working out where they fit in the world. But some of these look to be adults?

I act as if pronouns and gender is the most boring thing imaginable and I don’t indulge it (and I do find it boring!)it just shows to me that we can’t win.

But I can imagine in Western funded NGOs in Afghanistan it might be de rigueur or even a status symbol.

Yes, the actual article is called "How To Affirm the People in Your Life Who Use Multiple Sets of Pronouns" and yet this makes it clear that they don't want to be affirmed, so much as for us to get it wrong and not really be sure what we're supposed to do, so that they can suffer the agonies of "not feeling safe" or being "misgendered" and then feel even more special and brave.

Absolutely some are adults! And it’s bloody shocking! They’re often people who feel powerless or insecure in some way eg a longterm health condition. They feed off each other and gradually get more and more self-centred without realising how fucking ridiculous they sound!

The demands are so narcissistic that I’m often gobsmacked. Saw one on Twitter berating their actual allies:

“Allies do not get to decide what makes good allyship, how the fight is fought, or whether or not a person is an ally. We'll let you know what we need from you”

The entitlement is off the scale! Use my special pronouns that change every two seconds, nod along when I name my idiotic ‘identity’, and whatever you do or say will never be enough because we keep moving the goalposts because we have no actual life without this banal crap to focus on 🙄
