Sorry, no share token, but pleased to see another significant figure speaking out.

At Oxford, in the PPE course, there is alot of attention paid to 'the authorative voice', which, in none posh person speak is; sounding like you know what your talking about.
Which is all well and good, BUT someone really needs to update the tutors and students that when you are spouting total rubbish, doing it in an authoritative and overbearing mannor does not convince onlookers of your position, it just gives people the rage.

BraveBananaBadge · 25/08/2021 16:49

What is the equivalent struggle of trans people? Where are the centuries of legislation against trans identities? The only legislation at all relating to trans people is the Equality Act (2010), which gives them significant protections in law.

TRAs try to shut down the argument by shouting loudly that anyone who thinks like Simon Callow wishes trans people didn't exist and literally wants them all dead, from what can be gleaned on Twitter. The eloquence and logic between the two factions is like night and day, but it makes no difference to self-congratulatory pot-stirrers like Jones.

Good man. That was wonderful to see I really appreciate that he's made the point about women's rights (& spaces) alongside his (presumably more personal) concerns about the homophobia.

[Did everyone else hear his voice as you read the quotes? Grin ]

I heard Gareth from 4 Weddings & a Funeral Grin
Datun · 25/08/2021 18:27

Well said RoyalCorgi

Especially the conclusion The only legislation at all relating to trans people is the Equality Act (2010), which gives them significant protections in law. After that, what is left? The answer is: the right to get into women-only spaces. And since when is the campaign to get your dick out in the women's changing room the legitimate struggle of an oppressed class?

Hence when anyone asks the question well what rights don't you have, there's no answer. Because they want the right to do something that no man should have the right to do.

Christ almighty but talcum X gives me utter rage every bloody time.
You are not alone, but on the plus side hearing him referred to as Talcum X always brightens my day.

Thank you Simon Callow!

Thank you Simon 🙌 So sorry to see he’s getting a load of shit from the usual suspects. Brave man

Owen Jones is incapable of thinking outside his very small box. He comes across as someone who is quite thick.

@LizzieSiddal

Owen Jones is incapable of thinking outside his very small box. He comes across as someone who is quite thick.
From various accounts he isn't, and he's also a gifted orator.

It feels unwise to underestimate him, his set of skills, and the extent of his reach.

There’s a long and tragic history of members of minorities who’ve won greater acceptance kicking their ladder from beneath them.

That's hilarious.

The ladder doesn't get kicked harder or further than Stonewall gaining acceptance of homosexuality, and then kicking every homosexual under the bus in favour of the opposite of homosexuality.

Disappointingly, but not surprisingly, Joe Lycett and Russell Tovey disagree with Simon Callow.

Would that be with informed commentary rather than #nodebate ? (I'm trying to retain my optimism that people care about the standard of public discourse.)

To my trans followers: please remember there are many, many people who don’t believe your mere existence is ‘divisive’ or that you are a ‘danger to women’ or any equivalent nonsense and that the T is as important and valued as all the letters in LGBTQI+ Rainbow flag Transgender flag

Oh pleeease, Simon Callow is a gifted actor, brilliant speaker and all round witty and intelegent guy. Joe and Russ are two guys you'd tire of after ten minutes in the pub.
FloralBunting · 25/08/2021 20:42

Performative bollocks.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/08/2021 20:52

My thoughts exactly. I found Joe Lycett irritating enough before the wokescolding and I've literally never given Russell Tovey even a passing thought.

I didn't know the names so had to look them up - still don't know JL & only know RT from a bit part in Dr Who a million years ago 🤷‍♀️ I'm not generally good on actors or celebrities but surely neither is anywhere near SC in terms of name recognition?
LazyViper · 25/08/2021 21:59

Haha, OJ is so reliably shrill on this. Every attempt at discussion is an “onslaught” against trans people, “grim” and so on.

I refuse to believe he’s anything other than a satirical comedy character like Titania McGrath. He’s just too predictable to be anything else.

On the plus side, the TRAs must be rattled that another national treasure is speaking his mind. Thank you Simon. Flowers

Thislittlefinger123 · 25/08/2021 22:16

Thank you Simon ❤️ Love him as an actor and now love him even more!

Unfortuantly LOJ is all too real. Iv had the 'pleasure' of meeting him.

You can't help but wonder why people like this can't read any more into what's in front of them than to make out these things are an 'attack' all the time. The generational divide is vast. People like Lycett and even OJ (it pains me to say it) aren't stupid. But these reactions are so misleading.

Ultimately, Callow really isn't saying what they think he is saying - same as JKR or anyone. It's so tiresome.

LobsterNapkin · 25/08/2021 22:36

Actors seem to be about as likely as anyone else to be intelligent, or not. I'm sure that must make some kind of difference in their command of their craft but it doesn't seem to be especially correlated to how they appear to the audience.

Enough4me · 25/08/2021 22:50

@BraveBananaBadge I agree, he said men shouldn't go in women's space, they are saying that he said TW are a danger to women.

They just want to suck up to TW.
