More celebrities coming out as non-binary

I saw this on bbc: www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-57169541

I’m not familiar with Demi but notice every week the bbc is reporting on some young celeb and their special lgbtq status.

I suspect it’ll have an influence on young people and maybe it’ll peak and people will get bored of it.

I remember 10+ years ago it was really common and cool to come out as bisexual. Though now there’s a whole array of statuses you can choose from.

If I was a celebrity I would strongly consider coming out as non binary because the alternative is that you are assumed "cis"

Like a sort of green force field. Yes I see that. Hiding their GC behind the NB.

@KaleSlayer

It’s quite tedious isn’t it. She’s clearly trying to stay relevant after lots of issues over the last few years. I think she’s probably quite vulnerable.
Demi goes by they/them pronouns. Stop misgendering them. /gen
Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 20/05/2021 22:54

A woman at work came out as non binary on our intranet to an audience of 5000. She'd produced a helpful two page document about the importance of pronouns.

She was praised by senior management bringing their whole self to work. Sigh.

(That's a concept that can get in the sea too. It's clear from my employer's stonewall affiliation my whole terfy self is unwelcome. And they don't pay me for my whole self.)

🤣 Demi has literally just changed pronouns. People won’t always get it right when they’ve been used to Demi being she/her for so long.

So.......go away. HTH Smile

blueangel19 · 20/05/2021 23:34

She had quite a lot of serious issues and nearly died of drugs. I think she has brain damaged as a result.

I don't believe in your ideology. So I certainly won't genuflect to it by having anyone dictate to me how I can refer to someone who isn't even here. In the same way I am not demanding that you refer to me in a particular way when I am not there or demand that you stop mis-sexing. I could, of course, do as you do, but giving authoritarian orders to others is not in my nature.

I use sex-corresponding pronouns. Or none. Depending on the rules of the space I'm in. But I certainly won't bow down to totalitarian demands based on a harmful ideology. I got enough of that growing up under a totalitarian regime. And despite the Staasi, the jail terms, the relentless propaganda, people still found a way to defy the demands of those criminals who ruined ran my country. As we are finding ways now.

It's not ideology. Misgendering people can be really bad for their mental health.

Demi goes by they/them pronouns

Demi doesn't get to choose the words I use. If Demi asked politely I might go along with the request, but inside I'd still be going "she really" so what's the point?

KaleSlayer · 21/05/2021 00:41

Gender ideology is bad for many people’s mental health.

It is.

IdblowJonSnow · 21/05/2021 00:42

A lot of disappointing hate on this thread. Why do people care if there are some individuals who don't wish to identify as female or male?
I know a child who has just told people they are non binary. They don't have any issues, aren't following a fad, don't want any drama or attention. Just quietly getting on with things.

The kids at school have, fortunately, all been very tolerant and accepting. Quite unlike the bunch of vicious posters on here.

OldCrone · 21/05/2021 01:17

Male and female aren't identities, they're sexes. Why do people want to 'identify' as sexless?

Why does this child think they are 'non binary'? What do they think this means? What do you think this means?

CharlieParley · 21/05/2021 01:53

It's not ideology.

The doctrine of gender identity is not based in material fact but faith. The belief that an inner feeling overrides biology and from that idea flow various other ideas about how society ought to be organised and what laws we should have. Disbelievers are treated not as agnostics but as heretics, to be punished and silenced. That is about as ideological as it gets.

Misgendering people can be really bad for their mental health.

Demanding that I ignore my own beliefs and knowledge in order to pander to a stranger's beliefs is bad for my mental health. I'm astonished that you would resort to this. Prioritising the mental health of complete strangers over my own is inimical to my wellbeing and runs counter to self-care principles. I also find it incredibly offensive and hurtful that my polite and respectful refusal to espouse your belief is framed by you in this way. That you seek to shame me into submitting to your demands is obnoxious, preposterous and, in my view, qualifies as coercive behaviour. You do not own me, my thoughts or my beliefs. I will not bow down to your religion. Get over it.

And maybe think about how cruel and selfish your attitude is. It's pretty much the same attitude that reigned in the country I grew up with. And that was a totalitarian state.

CandyLeBonBon · 21/05/2021 03:27

Misgendering people can be really bad for their mental health.

Gaslighting is really bad for MY mental health, which is exactly what this is. My mental health is equally important as DL's so I'm going to do what is right FOR ME, because I am pretty sure that DL has enough issues surrounding frozen yoghurt to be too worried about my opinion.

HTH

ThonsDesperate · 21/05/2021 08:08

Not to be facetious, I genuinely don't understand how a complete stranger 'misgendering' someone when they are not within earshot, is bad for their mental health. How? If I ever have a conversation with Demi Lovado (unlikely), I will say 'lovely to meet you Demi'. Demi will never know that I believe Demi to be female. Polite friendly chat. Everybody happy.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 21/05/2021 08:10

Oh oh - apparently Them Sam and the person who announced they were ‘them’ this week have recorded a duet (insert your own joke here).

Ahhhhh bit it makes ‘sense’ (kinda)

FakeColinCaterpillar · 21/05/2021 08:23

I hope they are called ‘them too’.

Well exactly. I don't wish Demi or indeed the majority of people any harm. I still perceive the sex of a person, especially if meeting them IRL.

One could argue that it is the people perpetuating the false message that people like me wish Demi harm, are the actual people who don't have Demi's best interests in mind.

As far as I can tell, it’s damaging to the mental health of those who believe in such a thing when they read or hear about “misgendering” being done to famous people, and are offended on their behalf. Of course there is no way whatsoever that Lovato or anyone else whose pronouns they’ve demanded people change will ever know how I refer to them.

I am yet to have it explained to me why third person pronouns don’t refer to a person’s sex. Why does he or she refer to a person’s gender identity all of a sudden? Who decided this? When did it come in? Who made it the law of English language? Why do I have to comply?

BreatheAndFocus · 21/05/2021 08:56

What I found sad is that Demi implied that in order to be able to properly express her gender, she/they had to be “non-binary”. I find that so regressive I could weep.

I grew up being told that as a girl I could do/say/feel what I wanted. I could wear what I wanted, do my hair how I wanted, play with whatever toys I wanted, follow whatever career I wanted, etc.

Now NB seeks to dig up those long-buried stereotypes and push them round on a platform like f**king deities! Short hair cut - boy, don’t want to do sexy poses - boy, feel sensitive and cry easily - girl, have a mix of those things like 99% of the whole bloody human race - ooh, non-binary! Much applause all round!

I feel sorry for Demi and I think they’ve had a number of difficulties in their life, but this announcement is sad - not for Demi’s sake as much as for the many young people who will think it’s cool, and swallow these ridiculously old-fashioned stereotypes and then label themselves and try to squeeze themselves into stupid, pointless and restrictive boxes.

Exactly. Unless DL specifically said to me "you think I'm a woman, don't you?", I would be able to avoid the question. Unfortunately with a lot of these people there seems to be a need for drama and attention and they do want to force people to either say something they don't believe or "misgender" them, as a power trip and a dominance display.
