I saw this on bbc: www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-57169541

I’m not familiar with Demi but notice every week the bbc is reporting on some young celeb and their special lgbtq status.

I suspect it’ll have an influence on young people and maybe it’ll peak and people will get bored of it.

I remember 10+ years ago it was really common and cool to come out as bisexual. Though now there’s a whole array of statuses you can choose from.

And if I'm in a group I use he/him rather than 'they'.
Stealth and her friends have gone for a walk. She has so many friends he take up the entire pavement.
Clear?

SpindleWhorl · 19/05/2021 20:47

It's all there from Demi, isn't it? 'Call them out on''; 'open to working with'; 'messaging'; 'I I I I I I I I I me me me'; 'feel safe'. I know she's been through hell but she's kicking the cat there and chucking blame around for a non-problem.

I'd prefer her to say, 'sorry guys, got it wrong, have a nice day.' Anyone who cared about advising her would be suggesting this too.

DL can say "I am this, that, or the other" but the (perhaps painful) fact is that DL is a woman and will have a female sexed body with all that goes with it for the rest of DL's life.

DL now has the option to take that information and do something with it, but in the interests of "feeling safe" and perhaps looking for publicity they have chosen to deny the reality that has made for some very nasty and unpleasant experiences.

They (DL) will be surprised to learn that the past will always be there and eventually need to be dealth with; opting out of the truth won't be of much benefit as time passes.

My new pronoun will be neeee/ naaahh Line the noise a police car or an ambulance makes

Remember when slebs couldn’t speak directly to us plebs? I miss those days.

Twitter needs to get in the bin. Along with calling out. Educating yourself. And getting in the bin, in fact.

They're all over everything now like a rash @womanity. No, I don't want to look at your 15 year old kid's Instagram thanks very much, stop linking to it you careless idiot.

Delphinium20 · 19/05/2021 23:59

It's astounding how, with the Palestine/Israel war, the hunt for an armed soldier in Belgium and the doubling of the death/gunshot rates of children in the US, we also see headline news of nothingness. I guess I'll take DL and this not news over the other things.

I'll Gin to a world where the only headline is the latest non-binary coming out announcement!

@Cleanandpress This is my favorite response yet: We share your bored incredulity

EyesOpening · 20/05/2021 00:47

Once someone “comes out” as non-binary, does anything different happen for them? Will people treat DL differently (apart from some will now think DL is wonderful and some will roll their eyes)? If not much else changes eg you still suffer from misogyny and sexism (although you may now attribute to something else) it’s going to be quite a let down

workreadplay · 20/05/2021 01:42

Most of feminists I know do not conform to gender stereotypes. This is what makes me so angry about the gender ideology, either conform to a stereotype or declare yourself something else. Maybe the way forward is for all of us to declare we are non binary.

Celebrities should either pay someone to run their SM or just keep it strictly professional. Use it to publicise current events and projects, and wish a few fans happy birthday, and call it a day.
baaaaal · 20/05/2021 05:19

Maybe the way forward is for all of us to declare we are non binary.

Don't identify with a gender. Check. I'll just make do with the sex listed on my birth cert.
Tend not to conform to gender norms of either... umm... trick question? How would one navigate life not conforming to any stereotype of any gender?

Unless they meant solely conform with either? In which case, I pass, but I don't know a single woman who fails.

Now we are LGBTQ+ too. Let's go eat froyo and fuck up some statistics! Just need to come out super dramatically on social media first.

My pronoun is a noise, like a kazoo.

I agree with this. Everyone just gets an individual pronoun and then everyone is feeling special enough that we can call people he / she again and use the special pronoun if we don't know? We could even do this thing where we assign the special pronoun at birth and make the parents feel included by having them choose it. It'll be called Special Individual Pronoun.

No need to "Come Out" to the world. Feeling the urge to reinvent yourself? Now you can just dye your hair or change your career or learn a language or something - all of which entitles you to a new identifying label but not one that's going to affect other people's rights or behaviours.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 20/05/2021 05:29

BBC Radio 4 spend a considerable amount of time discussing non binary last night on PM. I felt so more more “educated” after that. Particularly about using pronouns. Apparently we can can use the third party to refer to people. My husband pointed out that it only makes to use one or it.

quiteathome · 20/05/2021 07:22

What is a gender norm?

Or to rephrase it. Does anyone fit gender norms?

Can someone describe a gender normal she person?
Or a gender normal he person?

What do they do? Because I don't actually think I know anyone who is actually fully gender normal?

Or maybe it is because I am getting old

toffeebutterpopcorn · 20/05/2021 07:36

When I look at the BBC news site the ‘kids’ news (forget what it’s called) usually has 4 items under their heading and most days than not there is 1 or more stories about gender/pronouns etc issues. They are really focussing on this - you’d think there wasn’t anything actually happening in the world...

Justhadathought · 20/05/2021 09:34

Or to rephrase it. Does anyone fit gender norms

No! Not unless they are trying very hard.

brainfogmiddleage · 20/05/2021 10:31

Exactly. It makes me feel really sad for young women if they feel so highly pressured to fit into a box that they can't even stop trying, or reduce their efforts, without shoving themselves into a different box.

Many seem so conditioned to see this as about choice and individuality that they can't look out at the world and wonder what exactly is the problem here. Instead it's all about 'healing' and not working hard enough on their 'authenticity', rather than anger at the world for fucking women over.

The froyo thing makes sense - it's not unusual for anger to be misdirected at soft targets.

PaleGreenGhost · 20/05/2021 12:28

Did Judith Butler come out as non binary shortly after being called "cis" by someone. Or did I dream that?

If I was a celebrity I would strongly consider coming out as non binary because the alternative is that you are assumed "cis". A belief in gender ID seems compulsory in popular culture (and if anyone could tell me what happened to alternative culture I'd love to find it again). Being labelled "cis" is abhorrent, highly offensive to me. I have an almost visceral reaction. Non binary doesn't do this to me. I'm an atheist both religious and gender, but if I'm going to be forcibly labelled by others I want the closest fit.

I imagine having suffered for being female and then being assumed "cis" in the public eye is quite re traumatising. I'm sure for some celebrities it's a more judicious decision though. A little like parents suddenly finding their religion when they want their kids to get into a church school.

NotBadConsidering · 20/05/2021 12:37

They always seem so miserable before and after these announcements. And by “they”, to demonstrate the problem this creates with the English language, I mean all the celebs who announce such things, not just this one person “they”.

They - all of them - don’t ever seem to be in a better place after such announcements, don’t seem to be better adjusted, or more self-accepting. It just seems to re-package their sadness into something they - all of them Hmm - think will garner greater sympathy than just...being sad about life due to obvious reasons that Lovato has.

It’s quite tragic really 😞.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 20/05/2021 13:09

It’s the pop star equivalent of the tv celeb ‘Hello rise and fall and rise and fall’ PR stunt.

Tv celeb (not necessarily in this order) - meets partner, gets engaged, gets married, pregnancy, baby, someone cheats, reconciliation and/or divorce, plastic surgery, health scare, sick parent... starts again...

Whenever the career gets a bit quiet, pull something out of the bag. As someone on twitter said today ‘Madonna was found this 30 years ago!’. And wasn’t Jessie J gay for at one point?

Childrenofthestones · 20/05/2021 15:30

It all sounds a bit like "I'm the only gay in the village!" from Little Britain.
Desperate to be special.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 20/05/2021 15:38

Or ‘it girls’ in ye olden days (‘I’m having sex and what are you going to do about it!’).

womanity · 20/05/2021 16:08

Now that Demi Lovato and Sam Smith are both NB, I’ll look forward to them both being described in the same way by the media, who will in no way continue to know, or use language that reflects, that one used to be a woman and one a man.

quiteathome · 20/05/2021 18:17

But where are all the non binary toilets?

What do they identify as when they need a poo?
