I saw this on bbc: www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-57169541

I’m not familiar with Demi but notice every week the bbc is reporting on some young celeb and their special lgbtq status.

I suspect it’ll have an influence on young people and maybe it’ll peak and people will get bored of it.

I remember 10+ years ago it was really common and cool to come out as bisexual. Though now there’s a whole array of statuses you can choose from.

One minor mystery is why the convention is always to refer to they/them (rather than just "they") - or are there people who pair the subject pronoun up with a different object pronoun than its usual one? Nothing would surprise me these days - maybe there are people requesting he/her or she/him. It clearly isn't a matter of listing forms exhaustively, or the reflexive "themselves" would need to be included along with the possessive determiner "their".
Apparently that's not what the slash means. Pink news recently described how someone had changed her pronouns to she/they. When I queried it I was told that means you can use she-type pronouns or they-type pronouns. So she/her means you can use she-type pronouns or her-type pronouns. Which makes no logical sense at all to me but I'm getting used to that.

A lot of the girls I teach are fans so I suspect this will come up in school. I feel so sad every time another woman rejects womanhood.

Bythemillpond · 19/05/2021 19:07

Again, Lovato emphasized that she's open to working with the frozen yogurt shop "to help align the messaging to where I feel safe going in there and I can eat the froyo that I went there for

Why would a business want advice from someone who had to have the fact that people have actual medical problems and allergies explained to them.
I think the Froyo thing showed the arrogance of someone who couldn’t get their mind round the fact other people might not want sugar for their own reasons. The fact that the only reason DL could come up with that sugar free yoghurt was sold was to encourage EDs seems like someone who can’t think outside their own experience.

StealthPolarBear · 19/05/2021 19:07

The phrase 'call out' can fuck off too.

Cleanandpress · 19/05/2021 19:19

@transdimensional

The English language seems to be widely misunderstood. When people say "I use they/them pronouns", they actually mean "I ask others to use they/them pronouns [when referring to me]". Everyone uses they/them pronouns (and he/him and she/her). It all depends who we're talking about. And if we're talking about ourselves, we use I/me pronouns.

According to the Guardian: "The pop singer will use the pronouns they and them to describe themselves".

Surely, they'll continue to use I/me to describe themselves, unless they're accustomed to speaking about themselves in the third person? I guess one cannot rule that out.

And "refer to" would be more correct than "describe". Pronouns refer to people or things. Pronouns do not describe. Adjectives describe.

I haven't read the whole thread but exactly this all goes though my mind every time people say "use pronouns".
Thank you.

I'm coming out as non binary or at least something similar. My employer has offered a bursary for further study for those that are under represented. I reject gender as a social construct used for oppression and gender questioning people are eligible

KaleSlayer · 19/05/2021 19:29

Maybe arrogance. But I think some celebs are so used to have people just go along with what they say, because the people around them are making money from them, that they just don’t get exposed to others opinions anymore.
I think it was Ed Sheehan who spoke about the importance of having people around you who will say ‘no, that’s not right’ when you’re a celeb. He spoke about the importance of keeping trusted people around you, old friends and family who basically tell you if you start acting like a dick. He said it’s easy to have people on the payroll that will just let you get out of control.

Demi’s past makes for very sad reading. But I really don’t think this latest move will solve her issues.

I think PR companies these days just have a tick list of stuff to get their less talented stars attention:

  1. Leak nudes/sex tape.
  2. Disclose previous abuse.
  3. Announce Nonbinaryness or queerness.
  4. Seek treatment for drug addiction.
  5. Announce you are now in some sort of cult: Buddhist/Vegan/Canadian.
  6. If nothing else works pronounce your support for Donald Trump.

My brother recently announced he is non-binary, in an email to the family containing a helpful reading list so that we could educate ourselves.

Surely the word 'brother' too gendered? Ze needs a gender neutral adjective. How about 'wanker'?

NecessaryScene1 · 19/05/2021 19:47

So did you already know he was a fucking knob, or did this come out of nowhere?

Siblingquandary · 19/05/2021 19:49

I had my suspicions

NinaMimi · 19/05/2021 19:51

@Siblingquandary

My brother recently announced he is non-binary, in an email to the family containing a helpful reading list so that we could educate ourselves.
What did the reading list include?

I’ve tried to “educate” myself but there’s really no explanation of what non binary is and I don’t expect to find any reading material which will illuminate it. None of it stands up to questioning or the application of logic.

Siblingquandary · 19/05/2021 19:54

No idea, I'll have to check the email...

Cleanandpress · 19/05/2021 20:01

It is quite baffling from a woman with what looks like 85 different products on her face and eye make up that Liz Taylor wore in the 1950s.

I cant help thinking non binary is a retreat from the idea you have to have a body you can put a thong bikini if you are a woman. I swim regularly and young women come out of the changing rooms with completely bare arses. Horrible. I can't imaging being that age and thinking that was something women should normally wear.

Siblingquandary · 19/05/2021 20:05

I do remember that he did caution us against listening to T**fs.

I think his exact self descriptor was "non-binary trans feminine"

So... Yeah...

Cleanandpress · 19/05/2021 20:07

Is he going to wear a thong bikini at the pool so we can see his hairy arse Sibling?

Siblingquandary · 19/05/2021 20:09

Frankly, nothing would surprise me.

But I am detailing the thread about celebrities, apologies...

Not at all Sibling. We share your bored incredulity.

GroggyLegs · 19/05/2021 20:19

So many 'I's in that frozen yoghurt debacle article. Diva.

Never mind you nearly binned off a family business for selling sugar free yoghurt for diabetics, make it all about YOU love.

Love is gender neutral.

FakeColinCaterpillar · 19/05/2021 20:41

Personally I think we should ALL be given a gender neutral pronouns and that will confuse them. When they’ve all given themselves super special pronouns what will they have to do next to be special.

My pronoun is a noise, like a kazoo. If you haven’t got one you have to make the noise yourself.

StealthPolarBear · 19/05/2021 20:44

How dare KAZZZZHOOOO call me 'you'. My second person pronouns are moo/mour.
