They're requesting texts and emails for the discussion later on in the programme.

In fact, they've gone straight to it as the first topic of today's programme.

We've already had "gender assigned at birth" from Emma Barnett. However, they've got gender critical guests in the studio!

Good luck to the guests.

WinterTrees · 17/05/2021 10:07

Ooh, Sarah Ditum and Caroline Criado-Perez!!

nauticant · 17/05/2021 10:10

Well, maybe not in the studio but leading the discussion. Although the gender activists are active in the incoming messages. For example, single sex toilets are "anti-trans".

I am sure they will be somewhat selective of the ones to include. Did they introduced the guests by saying "in the interest of impartiality some say our guests are hateful bigots"?
WinterTrees · 17/05/2021 10:12

EB has read out two messages, both saying that sex-segregated facilities are 'anti-trans'. Aaaaaand now a statement from Stonewall...

CCP and SD have their work cut out.

Claire4567 · 17/05/2021 10:14

Did the bat signal go up early for non supporters of sex segregated facilities - or are the BBC cherry-picking messages?

nauticant · 17/05/2021 10:15

I don't know but apparently they're getting a deluge of messages.

OP posts:
WinterTrees · 17/05/2021 10:17

EB doing that stressy interrupting thing, and saying it's because they've had so many messages on this. Seems odd that both the ones she's chosen to read out were saying sex-segregated facilities were regressive and anti-trans.

nauticant · 17/05/2021 10:18

... and they're done!

That was Emma Barnett's first foray into the gender issue on WH. I'd say she's playing the terminology game while not being wholly on board with the prescribed progressive thinking.

It's lively on twitter:

For example, single sex toilets are "anti-trans".

I can see that if single sex toilets are the only facility, then transgender people have an unenviable choice if acknowledging their birth sex is difficult for them. So an additional mixed-sex option seems a good idea.

Akire · 17/05/2021 10:21

Have I missed it all by 1020?

nauticant · 17/05/2021 10:24

Yep. Done by 10.15. Emma Barnett said they might be returning to the messages they received but didn't give an indication when this might happen.

That was always the case with the pro-bloodsports brigade, and given how much more time TRAs seem to spend on social media than the average person, and the way opposing voices are now scared to speak out on Twitter and Facebook, it's probably many times that for this issue.

Perhaps they could follow their own advice which they so readily give out to women - get over it or if you are assaulted all you have to do is call the Police or the real peach if anyone wanted to assault you then they would, a sign on the door wouldn't stop them.
Nodal · 17/05/2021 10:28

stonewall quote on now saying we should have gender based and gender neutral - interesting

Terranean · 17/05/2021 10:29

She said this move is rowing back!
@Tibtom I missed the bigots comment! How awful!
Earlier on on R4 there was Jess Phillips talking about misogyny as a hate crime.
I welcome mixed sex as an additional space alongside the single sex. Whenever I suggest this on social media, I’m told that would out the transwomen what i don’t understand as other women will also use it if there is a queue etc.

IvyTwines2 · 17/05/2021 10:31

Note the BBC's wording of the Tweet: 'Communities Secretary
@RobertJenrick is to rewrite planning regulations forcing public buildings to have separate male and female toilets instead of gender-neutral facilities, but is this change a step forward or back?'

The negative and brutal-sounding 'forcing', like it's something we don't want, instead of the word 'requiring'.

endofthelinefinally · 17/05/2021 10:33

How will "female" be defined? In these toilets?

adviceseekingnamechanger · 17/05/2021 10:35

Toilets aren't degraded by gender, otherwise we would need 112 different types. It's about sex. Stonewall are unsurprisingly totally disingenuous.

adviceseekingnamechanger · 17/05/2021 10:35

Degraded? Stupid autocorrect- I meant segregated.

Warmduscher · 17/05/2021 10:37

Exactly. But it’s always “Do as I say, not as I do” isn’t it?

Tibtom · 17/05/2021 10:40

I hope she didn't - I was referring to an earlier episode where the presenter decided she needed to state that an organisation (Woman's Place or Fair Play for Women?) was known as a hate group - in the interest of impartiality.
nauticant · 17/05/2021 10:41

The topic is back on WH.

They seem to be taking calls from listeners in this new programme format, in the style of talk radio and similar.
