Pride in London getting ratioed

I don't know what's happened, maybe the interns who delete the critical comments are off sick or something, but lesbians are taking issue with a Facebook post by Pride in London saying "Happy #LesbianVisibilityWeek! A week dedicated to celebrating and supporting all LGBTQI women and non binary people in our community" and it's glorious:

Why indeed.

FreyaFolkvangr · 27/04/2021 17:46

This is brilliant. It's felt for a while like there are a depressing amount of lesbians who have (for whatever reason) rolled over and accepted the TRA line that men can be lesbians and are the most oppressed humans ever. I have friends like that and their stance baffles me. So to see so many women actually stand up and say 'we're not taking this bullshit anymore' has cheered me up so much. There's such a sense of people not wanting to be silent anymore.

"This comment section is like being in the peasant’s revolt and we’ve just burned down the tax collectors house"

This was my favourite comment.

That facebook page is a thing of beauty, again as usual reasoned polite arguments on one side, abuse and no substance on the other side. Though for me a very low point was GC feminists being blamed for violence against trans individuals because having GC views means that others think it acceptable to go out and cause harm. (Directly translated as 'whatever a man does it is always a woman's fault')

Yes, this is my “favourite" of the ridiculous arguments used by TRAs. We are supposed to believe that transsexual prostitutes in Brazil get murdered because the johns have been reading Julie Bindel. It is utterly deranged.

This is bloody marvellous - so many women speaking out in their own names.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 27/04/2021 23:12

I thoroughly enjoyed reading those comments!

Mollyollydolly · 27/04/2021 23:40

It's a great thread and the best bit is the laughter. They're laughing at them, and nothing is more powerful than laughing at fools.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/04/2021 23:43

I quite agree. I saw another thread where laugh reactions were being described as literal violence earlier.

In every revolution, when people are no longer afraid, that is the turning point.

@Scout2016

"Alan Turing died for your sins, Gary" is winning for me.

They have scheduled the Pride event for 9/11 on the 20th anniversary too so their PR department are doing really well.

Wow - that is beyond insensitive Angry. I wonder if they dont even know what 9/11 was

There are now 2000 comments telling Pride in London in no uncertain terms that they were wrong to drag GBTQI women and non binary people into a celebration of Lesbian visibility.

I'm astounded and delighted that they still haven't got round to deleting all the comments that fail to comply with what they have for so long insisted is the majority belief, that a woman is anyone who says they are a woman, and a lesbian is someone who is attracted to the same GENDER.

I'm picturing a frantic scramble as they try to get hold of the person with the moderation password so they can erase the proof that the overwhelming majority of people agree that lesbians don't have penises, and women who love women do not have to prioritise every other letter in the QUILTBAG+ before themselves in lesbian visibility week.

Lots of comments mentioning the LGB Alliance, and how wonderful it is to once again have a charity that puts our own needs and interests first.

Lesbians have had enough of being erased by the institutions we created. The way things are going we'll be able to celebrate real pride again before too long. With other lesbian, gay and bisexual people. A family friendly event, where we can hold our heads up high and have a great day out, without having to feel ashamed to be lumped in with middle aged men dressed as adult babies, and those people who get off on dressing up as human/dog hybrids.

StarStar what a joy indeed.

lesbian people

Lesbian women...there fixed it for you.

WarriorN · 28/04/2021 06:31

Oh my, Angela Pope wins hands down!

Siablue · 28/04/2021 09:20

Are Pride in London the same organisation where all the non white volunteers resigned because of racism? If so they really don’t get inclusion do they. The comments are funny.

StrangeLookingParasite · 28/04/2021 15:04

Ahhh, I read a few more comments every time, and it's such a pleasure.

AngeloMysterioso · 28/04/2021 15:33

They’ve turned off comments now. I’m surprised they haven’t gone on a deleting spree, although if they did there’d be no comments left at all!

Rhannion · 28/04/2021 15:51

I bet someone got their wrists slapped for not monitoring the comments which were brilliant and funny too.
They deservedly got their arses handed to them on a plate by nearly all those who commented.

zzizzer · 28/04/2021 16:04

Makes you realise the power of censorship though. If people can't speak up, then they're left thinking they have a minority opinion when actually it's damn mainstream.

The phenomenon is known as preference falsification

Preference falsification, according to the economist Timur Kuran, is the act of misrepresenting one’s wants under perceived social pressures. It happens frequently in everyday life, such as when we tell the host of a dinner party that we are enjoying the food when we actually find it bland. In Private Truths, Public Lies, Kuran argues convincingly that the phenomenon not only is ubiquitous but has huge social and political consequences. Drawing on diverse intellectual traditions, including those rooted in economics, psychology, sociology, and political science, Kuran provides a unified theory of how preference falsification shapes collective decisions, orients structural change, sustains social stability, distorts human knowledge, and conceals political possibilities.

A common effect of preference falsification is the preservation of widely disliked structures. Another is the conferment of an aura of stability on structures vulnerable to sudden collapse. When the support of a policy, tradition, or regime is largely contrived, a minor event may activate a bandwagon that generates massive yet unanticipated change.

In distorting public opinion, preference falsification also corrupts public discourse and, hence, human knowledge. So structures held in place by preference falsification may, if the condition lasts long enough, achieve increasingly genuine acceptance. The book demonstrates how human knowledge and social structures co-evolve in complex and imperfectly predictable ways, without any guarantee of social efficiency.
