I was going to title this “couple who have chained themselves to each other” but after reading the report that’s clearly not what has happened. Her boyfriend chained her to him to stop her leaving him.

This woman has been hospitalised due to the ulcers this chain has created on her arm.

Lots of grinning faces on Facebook. This is a woman who has literally been chained to her a abusive partner to prevent her leaving- it’s causing her physical injury- they’re publicising his abuse of her. And people are laughing.

What the actual fuck needs to happen for people to recognise abuse when they see it?

You don't seem to have read the piece, or understood it,

And btw before I even read the article the thing that piqued my interest from a feminist perspective was that the chain was on the arms that allowed only him to be able to drive the car. Then I read the article and it was even worse than I thought.

Convincing people that coercive control is real shouldn't be this hard. That said, it's taken a disappointingly long time to convince the legal system that it exists so perhaps it's not so shocking that the general public is lagging behind in understanding despite the work of Sally Challoner and her sons.

But - laughing at those wounds? No, that's unaccountable.

At best, their relationship isnt working if they keep arguing to the point where she has to walk away. And at worst, he is an abusive arsehole.

Yes and so many people won’t bother to read the article to find out that information- so to them it will be as simple as “her choice to hurt herself.”

I bet her friends and family would have a different word to use to describe their “quarrels”.

Yep- she can’t even text a friend for help because he is sitting right there beside her.

I do understand abuse thanks, having left an abusive marriage. The last thing I would have ever done would be to take part in an interview blatantly showing me being abused, and there's no way an abusive man would want that either.

Those photos are awful. She doesn't look happy. This is very disturbing.

I didn't see any quotes from her, did you? Sounds like it's her partner who participated.

What is with the opening paragraph making out this is some soppy lovesick joke?

Even without the part towards the part towards the bottom that 1) makes clear how this was his idea 2) in response to her removing herself from his presence and 3) she had to be encouraged/cajoled/forced to go along with it, I wouldn’t be laughing at this. At its most benign I’d see it as an act of self-harm.

It’s a heavy industrial chain. It’s welded shut. Two people can never be apart for a second.

There would be something deeply disturbing about this even if the backstory wasn’t out there and she hadn’t been been injured.

It’s a truly horrible story, not a daft stunt.
