Kirsty Blackman, an SNP MP who has been very critical of Joanna Cherry and GC feminism has put out a tweet demonstrating she has completely misunderstood the two sides of the argument:

"I am a woman, I live as a woman, and I dress however I like... That's why when we hear 'Gender Critical' individuals talking about 'proper women' or 'real women' I am gravely worried"

The comments are amazing.

She has no idea what she's on about.

This is the same woman who thinks TW are adult human females because she once saw it written on a picture of a T-shirt.

PothoIeParadies · 22/02/2021 00:10

She's written a blogette. Strawman?

Nay. There's enough straw in it to provide bedding for an entire stables!

Getting popcorn for this one...

Her blog post is an amazing example of a straw man. She writes: “when we hear 'Gender Critical' individuals talking about 'proper women' or 'real women' I am gravely worried. Policing what women wear or what they look like is drawn directly from the 1950s my Granny finished school in.

Absolutely, biology is real, but it is not possible to tell what chromosomes or genitals someone has by looking at them. I do not believe there should be restrictions on how to 'woman'. “

Gender critical feminists have never said that you have to wear certain clothes to be a real woman. That is ludicrous. She spends a long time stressing that she wears jeans and hoodies and doc martens and is still a woman. Yes, we know. Literally no one is arguing that women have to wear dresses or they aren’t women!
She then jumps to “it’s not possible to tell what sex someone is by looking at them.” Sure it’s possible. I do it all the time. But now her argument has shifted which is we say women have to be a certain way, which is... they have to be female.

DeRigueurMortis · 22/02/2021 02:51

She really has zero grasp of the issues at all.

I'm embarrassed for her....

MoleSmokes · 22/02/2021 03:59

Batshittery archived for posterity, in anticipation of deletion when she gets hammered by the Gender Gang for outing herself as MacTerf, stating that female biological sex exists - although male sex can apparently be flipped by magic of swapping bloke-boots for kitten heels.

I've seen this misperception before. Some people genuinely think that gender critical feminists promote stereotypes instead of trying to dismantle them.

I don't understand how you can be an MP speaking out on this subject without having a rudimentary grasp of the basics, but there you are.

Intelligence doesn't seem to be a prerequisite for being an MP.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 22/02/2021 06:44

The really sad bit IMO is that Kirsty Blackman was the MP from the lovely heartwarming www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/2679290-Found-a-toy-bunny-outside-the-House-of-Commons thread back in 2016. And now this.

WarriorN · 22/02/2021 06:51

So she's saying w and g are raped because they wear girly clothes?

Because I'm certain a rapist does know what chromosomes they have no matter what they wear.

Galvantulang · 22/02/2021 07:44

I saw a few comments saying is she a) genuinely clueless that she has it arse backwards b) trying to fudge the issue c) both?

The mind boggles.

notyourhandmaid · 22/02/2021 07:50

Lying about what 'GC feminism' (aka, feminism) says while presenting a manifesto for it... oh, dear.

I don't hope she receives the kind of vicious abuse GC feminists tend to online, although of course she will get some of it, but I hope she realises what's really going on, after all this.

Horehound Are you sure he was a boy? One can't tell by looking, you know.

Winesalot · 22/02/2021 08:17

It will be interesting to see if she finally works out that her premise for ignoring women so far is faulty.

I doubt it will make much difference to her because the underlying belief system is going to be still the same. It seems that believes people can effectively change sex and, in the case of males identifying as women, access all the rights meant for protecting women. I don’t think she is confused about her consent to that.

She just has this part wrong. And has been soothed into believing she can’t tell the difference of who is a woman in real life.

Cwenthryth · 22/02/2021 08:23

Is anyone a constituent of hers, what are her responses to letters/emails or meeting constituents to discuss this topic? (If you’re worried about outing yourself please name change for the thread!)

If she was my MP I’d be very very tempted to ask for a meeting to help her understand - she seems very confused.

nauticant · 22/02/2021 08:40

If you look at the trans activists in the tweet replies you can see the deployment of "gender expression" in terms of it being a separate concept to "gender identity". "Gender expression" works to catch any criticism that all this gender stuff is about stereotypes and to divert it away and neutralise it, with the argument being "this talk about stereotypes is about "gender expression" but we're talking about something different, we're talking about "gender identity" which exists completely separately to stereotypes".

This means that "gender identity" is solely a sense of how someone perceives their own identity at any moment in time. Now I'm not too bothered about that, because self regard of one's identity is a mental process which exists for us all. The surprising trick is that society and culture has to be reconfigured to comply with this. That whenever the person with the special identity encounters a rule of society in conflict with their self-perception, then that rule must be removed.

There's another trick involved too. It's that when someone tries to get to grips with what "gender identity" means, the answer they receive is in terms of what it is not.

WarriorN · 22/02/2021 08:54

You can't make laws around tricks.

Yeah. I'm happy to revise my present view if (a) someone could provide me with an alternative meaningful definition of woman to AHF (not the formless, shifting morass or whatever it was) and (b) could provide me with the objective criteria that comprises one's gender identity.

Since both seem impossible to answer, I cannot believe in the existence of a 'female gender identity' .

If it isn't possible to tell if the person in front of us is male or female then:

Why are puberty blockers so important for children?
Why are cross-sex hormones necessary?
Why do mtf transitioners spend so much money on facial feminisation surgery?

It's a mystery.

Sexnotgender · 22/02/2021 09:06

So embarrassed for her.

For those hard of thinking.

THE ONLY REQUIREMENT FOR BEING A WOMAN IS TO BE AN ADULT HUMAN FEMALE.

Couldn’t give a shit how you dress, whether you wear makeup or not, what shoes you wear etc.

GCAcademic · 22/02/2021 09:08

This is what happens when people engage in tribalism and don't actually listen to other points of view. Embarrassing.

Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 22/02/2021 09:09

I don't understand. How has she misunderstood what the GC is so badly?!
