This was the question:

Do you agree that there should be sex-segregated facilities for women in hospitals, schools, refuges and prisons?

Alex Sobel, Labour MP for Leed NW said: No.

What the hell is he thinking

I suspect it is more about being internally consistent, than about active thought. If you are in for a penny, then you have to be in for a pound. There is no picking and choosing the bits you like and don't like.

How has it become "woke" to hate women? How did this happen

It is not so much about conscious hatred, as much as arising from a world view in which all human beings are equal ( as in sameness), and a world in which it is assumed women, now, have equal rights. ( except they don't all over the world, of course)

From a failure to really understand the basis of women's exploitation and oppression. From a superficial understanding of feminism. From a lack of real empathy with the place and position of women.

I’m moving to Leeds in March and he will be my MP.

Looks like I’m going to be busy in my retirement!

gcnq It’s like bad science fiction, isn’t it, too implausible. I often feel I’ve woken up into a nightmare.

The weird thing is, Leeds used to be a centre of feminist activity in the 1970s and 80s.

I see his follow up Tweet was about gender neutral toilets. Why do these people always bring it back to toilets???

Because they talk from a position of privilege and lack the emotional intelligence to understand that other people have different experiences.

Because their knee-jerk reaction is that women, particularly older women are irrelevant.

Also, I suspect because men like this aren't particularly interested in the issue but take their cue from MPs like Nadia Whittome and Stella Creasy, who for reasons of ambition or naivety have a position that is completely incoherent.

I see the editor of the Yorkshire Post has taken notice:

I wonder what the farmers of North Yorkshire make of all this gender stuff. I imagine the idea of sex being on a spectrum is news to people whose livelihood depends on producing new sheep and cows every year.

I really don't get this political football that is trans issues. You can be fair to people with trans issues without denying natural female gender and denying them safe women only spaces.

Any politician should think clearly about this and weigh up the number of women voters against the number of trans voters.

Neither sector should be discriminated against

That is good, but I hope he realises that this is also about prisons and hospital wards.

Very much agree about the sheep and dairy farmers!

I'm so pleased feminists are screaming this from the rooftops and being a pain in the arse to the woke contingent. Keep on getting the message across and women will genuinely wake up to the threat this is to their wellbeing and security 👏👏👏👏

Gender isn’t the issue here. The issue is sex.

Men do not belong to the sex class of women, however they choose to present, whatever their “gender identity” is, whatever their name is, whatever their inner feelings are. They belong to the sex class of men.

Interesting that he also has "Jew" in his Twitter biography. Do you think he will be campaigning for mixed spaces in orthodox synagogues alongside prisons and changing rooms?

Janice Turner from The Times has also tweeted about this.

Every candidate at every election will be asked this question from now on. They need a better answer than dismissing the Equality Act, international human rights law & decades of feminist struggle in a single word, like this Labour MP. Judging from my postbag, women are watching. t.co/TVo8v2SHVn

This.

It is very apparent that for some men, trans issues are being used as an excuse to let loose their gynephobia. When you have a man seriously trying to say that the entire class of female sex should not be entitled to privacy, dignity, safety, freedom from harassment, the right to group by their sex, their right not to be forced to undress in front of a male, regardless of their own feelings, needs, faith and beliefs..... because the possible need of a male person outweighs all of it?

It's no longer excusable.

It's also ridiculous that it exposes while talking about 'no such thing as sex' is their given reason for this, they are demonstrating entirely sex based thinking, in which one sex class is subordinate to, lesser than and for the use of the other sex. The language borrowed from trans people is just being used to further their personal gynephobic agenda.

I very much agree with Janice.

Also the situation is likely to become more fraught in the US, and because of sports, likely to involve more denial of the existence of sex and a higher profile for this issue on social media and in the mainstream news.

I think there will also be more fall out from what is happening in Scotland.

Starmer really needs to get his head out of the sand. The Tories scent blood.

The question was actually asked of Tracy Brabin candidate for Mayor. Alex just replied. Tracey doesn't seem to have responded to the question yet.
Somehow watching her video I think I know what she thinks.

@merrymouse

I think the key issue is hat this MP refused to explain his position and would not accept that women had genuine concerns, but instead called them bigots.

Yes. He thinks that people who don't want mixed-sex facilities are bigots.
Recently I have seen a lot of comparisons of single-sex spaces to apartheid, so unfortunately he is not alone.

1980s Tory - "Gay people are all drag queens who just want to hang out in bars"
2020s Tracy Brabin promotional video - "Gay people are all drag queens who just want to hang out in bars".

I'm not really seeing the change in message...

Yup, if you go on any left-leaning FB sites, its a veritable feast of white men in their twenties/thirties calling anyone who wants single-sex spaces 'Jim Crow' etc. etc.

A couple of posters earlier asked if he has a wife. I think he has a wife and two children.
I really fail to understand how anyone can have views like his.
