This was the question:

Do you agree that there should be sex-segregated facilities for women in hospitals, schools, refuges and prisons?

Alex Sobel, Labour MP for Leed NW said: No.

Right. Coordinated campaign time.

People. How about we all email or write to our MPs with Mary's question and get their answer?

Yes! We could do a doodle poll with a simple yes or no responses!

My Tory MP knows the score and whilst he will tow the party line he knows what a woman is (and I can't tell you the relief I felt when I got his response.)

Does this misogynist MP Alex Sobel have a daughter? I do feel sorry for his wife.

I'm up for that. I've a Labour MP, thankfully not one who makes a dick of themselves like this on Twitter so I'm hopeful they will be receptive. What puts me off is tales of young staffers destroying these kinds of letters before the MP can see them.
ChattyLion · 04/02/2021 22:04

So when he says ‘I don’t want the votes of bigots’ he really means he doesn’t want the votes of the majority of his constituents (who like most people DO want same-sex carers, single sex toilets and hospital accommodation when they are vulnerable).

OK good luck with that Confused
I’d like to see this as a question for every panellist on current affairs shows. Great idea to contact MPs

Mollyollydolly · 04/02/2021 22:04

Good idea. I'm going to do it right now and cc in Keir Starmer.

PotholeParadies · 04/02/2021 22:04

There is the possibility that if it's a big enough influx, MPs will mention it to each other on their whatsapp group and MPs who've apparently got none will wonder why.

The AIBU thread, if anyone wants it

To think a sitting Labour MP should operate in line with their manifesto http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4156519-To-think-a-sitting-Labour-MP-should-operate-in-line-with-their-manifesto

Genius! Do this if you're emailing.

Even if a staffer deletes every single email so his/her employer never sees it, Keir Starmer's office can still see that x number from y constituency asked this question.

Wow, we Women are probably 50% of the voters out there.

Sometimes l feel that there is so much anti-women sentiment out there and that's the hate crime in my opinion.

bourbonne · 04/02/2021 22:11

Ah, so emailing is best? I've never written to an MP before and for some reason pictured it all done by paper letters! I vaguely assumed their email inboxes got filled up with slacktivist spam, but I suppose they must be as able to cope with the 21st century as any workplace...

Eowynthewarrior · 04/02/2021 22:14

How can this be someone in a mainstream political party in a western deomacracy ? Shame on Labour for allowing this and for an MP expressing such sexist views to retain the party whip. If racism was expressed in such an overt manner quite rightly there would be no place in any mainstream party

PurpleHoodie · 04/02/2021 22:17

Politicos in Leeds. Again.

PotholeParadies · 04/02/2021 22:21

bourbonne, there are normally pros and cons to each method.

Currently though, if you send it by post to their office at House of Commons, there is the possibility that your MP is participating in debates over Teams from the other end of the country and will not lay their eyes on their own post.

Email sent to Starmer and tweeted it too asking others to do the same. I'm so sick of this stuff I'll fill up every email box in the land if that's what it takes for women to be heard.

Sulkywoman · 04/02/2021 22:34

Hasn’t replied to some of mine...

PotholeParadies · 04/02/2021 22:34

I think the Daily Mail, which campaigned for single-sex wards back in the days when eliminating mixed-sex wards was part of Labour's election manifesto, might like to know about Alex Sobel.

If you happen to be acquainted with any DM journalists, please contact them.

Man's a plonker. Either too stupid to grasp the arguments, or too terrified of his constituency workers and researchers to step out of line.

Thank you. I've just done it - sent my MP an email and cc'd Keir Starmer. I had to include my postal address and phone number, which makes sense to show I'm a constituent, but is also terrifying considering the toxicity of this issue. Isn't it mad that I am literally shaking now for having entrusted my own MP's office with my opinion and home address?
FoxBaseBeta · 04/02/2021 22:43

Just seen this shared on Facebook Shock So, according to Alex Sobel, vulnerable and abused women don't deserve the safeguarding they're entitled to under law Angry

EdgeOfACoin · 04/02/2021 22:45

I see his follow up Tweet was about gender neutral toilets. Why do these people always bring it back to toilets???

NiceGerbil · 04/02/2021 22:48

To pretend they didn't just say they didn't think women deserved single sex prisons, refuges, showers etc etc

SuperHighway · 04/02/2021 22:49

@PartyofPun

Hard drive check time.
My thoughts exactly.

'Keir Starmer needs to climb down off the fence and sort this shit out, or check if there’s space back at the CPS for when he’s unemployable along with the rest of the party.'

Well said. I'm sick to death of him avoiding this issue and hoping it will all blow over. It wont. Women's safety and dignity is at stake here, and being undermined by members of his own party. What an utter disgrace

merrymouse · 04/02/2021 22:53

I really want the DM to run a headline saying ‘Labour: mixed prisons are the future’ so that Starmer and other MPs are forced to get off the fence and explain where they stand on this.

PotholeParadies · 04/02/2021 22:56

I have similar reservations. But I am going to do it anyway. I've always deeply admired Elizabeth Fry, whose work campaigning for the welfare of imprisoned women's was covered in child-appropriate detail in the history textbook I had.

It is absurd that anyone could want to go backwards.
