Biden has completely obliterated woman’s sex based protections as he said he would do.

www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/01/20/executive-order-preventing-and-combating-discrimination-on-basis-of-gender-identity-or-sexual-orientation/

“Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports."

Biden just passed all the worst parts of the Equality Act by executive order (so without going through any legislation at all). It is limited in effect to agencies (I think) but those agencies include the Bureau of Prisons, Dept of Housing and Urban Development, Dept of Education, Dept of Labor etc

This will of course be unchallenged, even welcomed by the media. It will likely have a knock on effect around the world.

And I am so angry. So so angry. He was never the ‘least worst option’ he is the absolute worst option.

The legal protections for people part is overdue. That’s good. But sex and gender have been very effectively conflated here. Because he has his sexist goggles welded on, the new President can’t see or doesn’t care that the obliteration of same-sex attraction and same-sex spaces part of this move creates the opposite effect to equality for women and children. TRAs easily cover all that up with the glittery rainbow hand waving about the few nasty feminist bigots making a fuss.

This type of stuff is also relatively low cost for cash-strapped governments to implement so it sends out an easy and attractive socially liberal signal on Biden’s part. We have to watch out for this coming our way too.

And of course he’s not worse than Trump, he’s better on lots of issues- it’s just that the bar has dropped extremely low and mainstream politics is highly misogynistic. Sad

ChattyLion · 21/01/2021 09:34

You might also ask the exact same question why New Labour, with its huge Parliamentary majority in the 90s and 00s, did nothing about providing abortion in Northern Ireland. They didn’t want to offend any men basically. Women’s lives and dignity and finances and their families just didn’t even figure.

rogdmum · 21/01/2021 09:35

Oh look, 24 hours in and we’re already being told haud yer wheesht. Trump is gone, thank God, and I’m not going to spend the next 4 years saying, “Oh, but it would be so much worse under Trump.” From this point forward it is utterly irrelevant what Trump may or may not have done during a second term. Biden is now President. Biden should be judged on his actions from day one. Executive orders should never be above scrutiny, particularly on changes that are being quietly slipped in through this convenient back door. If not now, when is appropriate? A month from now? A year from now?

TiredAndGrumpy85 · 21/01/2021 09:35

Yes I admit I'm not well versed in US lawmaking but I've never understood why the Democrats haven't tried harder to place abortion rights on a more secure footing when they've been in power. Call me cynical but it seems quite convenient to be able to hold it as a threat over women every 4 years.

The only way to make it secure would be via constitutional amendment. Amendments are rare and overwhelming support is required if you look at the processes. It has never been a realistic option.

@CaraDuneRedux

The Olympics has specific rules, the USA can't impose their own ones.

feelingquitehopeful · 21/01/2021 09:37

The one concern I always had about Biden is that I don't think he is in charge of the narrative, he is just effectively being instructed to sign up to the policies he does not really understand. He is being told by those that shout the loudest, by well coordinated groups that choose their moment well.
Biden looked weak before, he now looks extremely weak and easy prey for those with their own agendas. I am worried about this development coming so soon, with no time to reflect or consider the consequences is going to be part of a much broader problem with his presidency. Of course it is great Trump has finally gone, but really is this the best we can expect from the Democrats? Sad

Right now it is right to protest. Of course. I certainly haven't suggested it should be above scrutiny.

I know that - but the Olympic committee always "follows the money."

And they already let transwomen compete - eg Laurel Hubbard in weight lifting.

Fancy a bet on it? My 20 quid says significant numbers of transwomen in the medal tables in 2024.

RoyalCorgi · 21/01/2021 09:44

Love the comment about how no black or muslim American would care. You really want to think that no black American women, no muslim woman is going to care about males being placed in women's sports teams, women's prisons, women's refuges? You think those women don't ever intersect with those services? Don't need female spaces?

Absolutely. In fact, Muslim women will care more than most - Muslim women are not going to want to share changing rooms with biological males, and parents aren't going to want their teenage daughters (or indeed teenage sons) getting undressed in front of members of the opposite sex. This is going to be a huge issue for Muslims and for orthodox Jews.

Someone mentioned Tulsi Gabbard - unfortunately, she's no longer a member of Congress.

I think Biden must be insane to have signed this executive order, and I can't even imagine what might be going through Kamala Harris's head that she thinks it's OK. Probably our best hope is that there is a robust legal challenge to it. As far as sports goes, the US will soon have biological men in its women's Olympic teams - though maybe the next Olympics won't be until 2024. Maybe that will wake people up? I don't know. We keep hoping stuff will wake people up and it doesn't happen.

PurpleHoodie · 21/01/2021 09:45

And that will tarnish the Olympic brand.

What is the point of the Olympics if the Olympic Committee knowingly and wholeheartedly stuffs it full if cheats?

PurpleHoodie · 21/01/2021 09:46

JamieLeeCurtains · 21/01/2021 09:50

What is Tulsi Gabbard up to these days? Is she still politically active at all?

Well if you look closely enough Bidens medicare for all and the $15 minimum wage came feom his fellow Democrat Bernie Sanders who has been advocating these for most of his political career.

But shhhh it was all Bidens idea!

As for Kamala she tried to go for President and her own party and many more rejected her. She won't and doesn't care about women's rights either

Imnobody4 · 21/01/2021 09:56

Biden said he would do it and now he has the power it's the first thing he does. When someone shows you who they are - believe them.
And please can we never mention Trump again.

OldFolksTalkinBoutBackinMyDay2 · 21/01/2021 09:57

My 20 quid says significant numbers of transwomen in the medal tables in 2024.

My £20 says Olympics is completely free of transmen.

This, in spades. Let us remove the beam from our own eye first...
PurpleHoodie · 21/01/2021 10:03

Harris and Biden are riding a wave of "Black and other ethnic minority Rights"

Let's have it straight. They mean men. Black men's Rights. Brown men's Rights. And American women need to wake up to that fact.

Disappointing. Very disappointing.

BelleHathor · 21/01/2021 10:04

It will also hurt him politically once the stories start to emerge
That relies largely on a MSM that is non partisan and judging by how most of the media was positively gushing yesterday, looks like Biden will be able to do whatever he wants without it being reported critically.
Oh well like a PP said neutral people tried to warn about this prior to the election and were shouted down.

Signalbox · 21/01/2021 10:05

For the fundamental reason that if words have no meaning, and a political party is determined to lie and gaslight over material reality (i.e. that sex is binary and biological men and women exist), then I can never, ever support such a crazed, illogical position

I think this is right. There is something very unsettling about laws being used to support a falsehood. It would of course be possible to support trans people from a position of reality but instead they’ve gone down the ideological route where words cease to have meaning and we are all forced to live with the consequences.

NecessaryScene1 · 21/01/2021 10:07

Can't believe I've just read 'Biden is worse then Trump'.

I can't believe anyone thinks which one is "worse" is what matters.

Okay, you have to make a call on the day you actually vote, but for the rest of the 4 years when one of them is actually running the show it is not important

WomenAreBornNotWorn · 21/01/2021 10:11

I'm so sick of the vulnerable in society bring shit on. Women,children,BAME,animals... Newspapers are stressing how he is an inherently good decent man with boundless humanity. Not sure what sections of society will benefit from that 'humanity'

turnitonagain · 21/01/2021 10:11

Gosh many on this board are illiterate.

In an America where minorities face police violence, white supremacist violence, xenophobia - trans is not the TOP CONCERN for most in that community and never will be before those issues are resolved.

I have black relatives in the US, some who vote Republican, most who are devoutly Christian. Not one - none - has ever discussed trans rights with me. Ever. Never heard it at any large gathering or political debate.

If you can find me 5 black or Hispanic activists with any sizable following for whom this is their main issue I’ll be quiet.
