Biden has completely obliterated woman’s sex based protections as he said he would do.

www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/01/20/executive-order-preventing-and-combating-discrimination-on-basis-of-gender-identity-or-sexual-orientation/

“Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports."

Biden just passed all the worst parts of the Equality Act by executive order (so without going through any legislation at all). It is limited in effect to agencies (I think) but those agencies include the Bureau of Prisons, Dept of Housing and Urban Development, Dept of Education, Dept of Labor etc

This will of course be unchallenged, even welcomed by the media. It will likely have a knock on effect around the world.

And I am so angry. So so angry. He was never the ‘least worst option’ he is the absolute worst option.

This is what I said every time dh spoke of how much he was looking forward to Biden being sworn in. Don’t get me wrong, I was glad to see the back of Trump. But Biden is a privileged old white man, who doesn’t have a clue what he’s just done.

@rockinaftermidnite

Oh good grief. The man hasn't even been in office 24 hours and yet already you lot are picking him apart. Give him a chance at least!
Couldn't agree more. At least decency is being brought back into America's top office. I don't think the world would have survived another for years of Trump - climate change alone, demands action. Hopefully respect for all will be a hallmark of his office as he professes. Can't be worse!
turnitonagain · 21/01/2021 08:09

@EdgeOfACoin

Biden was worse than Trump on this particular issue. Voters had to weigh up everything, including Trump's stance on climate change, his attitude towards women in general, his racism, his attitude towards democracy...

Biden is hideously wrong on this issue, but Trump was worse on so many others.

It’s frustrating on this board that so many posters expect the trans issue to outweigh the many other serious problems facing women in America.

There’s STILL no paid maternity leave in the US in 2021 and there’s a party (happens to be Trump’s) that wants to ban abortion.

You can’t expect people in another country to have your same priorities when they’re facing their own problems.

Er, yes, for the things he's done in the first 24 hours...

Is there some sort of grace period where elected politicians get to enact whatever they want without anyone being permitted to comment on it?

Ah, you're thinking of the last 24 hours when you get to pardon whoever the hell you want then drop the mic and piss off in your helicopter Wink
OvaHere · 21/01/2021 08:12

Dreadful. He said he was going to do it though so it's not a surprise. Sad

It's pretty galling for an administration that has spoken so much in recent weeks about science and truth they promote nebulous, pseudo science ideas like gender identity.

I don’t expect the trans issue to outweigh everything else. That doesn’t stop me being incredibly pissed off about what he has done to women’s rights in the first two minutes of his presidency.

Are we to never criticise anything he does just because he isn’t Donald Trump?

Floisme · 21/01/2021 08:15

There's one thing I'll say for gender lobbyists. They clearly don't hang back thinking, 'Oh wait, there are more serious things going on in the world. Let's get Covid sorted first, and climate change...' Do they hell. Watch and learn.

Or is it possible American voters are not as worried about this issue as you are and that’s why they voted Biden in and why there’s no outcry in the press about this executive order?
Arobase · 21/01/2021 08:17

The left are now worse than the right, the cancel culture & de-fund the police are two worrying trends they support.

Really? Worse than the party which wants to ban abortion? Worse than the faction which stomped all over black rights?

absolutely

it looks like it. it looks like we're meant to lie down and take anything because its not trump.
i dont get this attitude at all.

OhHolyJesus · 21/01/2021 08:18

Does anyone have any insight on how this might go if it got to the Supreme Court with the two Justices Trump secured whilst in office?

The plus of maternity leave doesn't cancel out the horror of gender identity, anyway men can get pregnant now right 🙄 so of course women can't be discriminated against for pregnancy and maternity.

It's like having same sex marriage which is great but you have to have Self ID too. You can't have one without the other. How is that a win? It's a compromise of sorts (by coercion or deception) that ends badly for women, women and children, always.

HumphreyCobblers · 21/01/2021 08:18

Anything is possible turnitonsgain, but none of what you just said stops me from thinking that this was an appalling move in his part. I am appalled that this has happened and worried about the implications for the women of America and how it will impact on the rest of the world.

NecessaryScene1 · 21/01/2021 08:18

Whether politician A is "worse" than politician B is a personal judgment that depends on how you weight issues, and what you think their overall impact will be.

BUT

Regardless of who you think is "worse" you should be criticising A for the bad things they do and criticising B for the bad things they do.

You don't give either a pass on their bad stuff because you think they're better than the other one.

bellinisurge · 21/01/2021 08:20

It's a really shit start. I doubt the republicans will take it lying down.

Helmetbymidnight · 21/01/2021 08:20

when trump took America out of the paris climate change agreements, did they say to environmentalists 'give him a chance'?

nauticant · 21/01/2021 08:21

Surely one of the main benefits of Biden replacing Trump is that people should now be able to criticise what the President and his administration does without being attacked, and hope that perhaps now they will listen to objections, from wherever they come, even from women, and weigh up whether actually they might not have got everything exactly right.

Helmetbymidnight · 21/01/2021 08:22

exactly! its so weird that biden gets a free pass because he's not trump- ridiculous blind attitude-

Quite. Didn't the new Deputy Health Secretary, on their inauguration speech, rabbit on about transgender rights? Is a thought there might be more pressing health issues on the agenda. You know, a vaccine rollout, a national health service, protecting the most vulnerable from Covid.

Goodness me, uppity feminists thinking gender ideology isn't going to be harmful to the policy making. Seems the new administration are making their priorities Crystal clear, and it's not the large swathes of vulnerable & impoverished people with no access to health care that are at the top of the pile.

You have every right to find it appalling.

What I don’t accept is that Americans are being hoodwinked into backing Democrats who want to erase women. Maybe most Democrats agree with this. In which case while you may be appalled, it’s about as useful as me being appalled that Russians seem to love Putin. My internet outrage isn’t going to change their society.

DappledOliveGroves · 21/01/2021 08:30

Give me Trump any day. Yes he was loathsome and sexist but at least you know where you stand with someone like that.

For me, the trans issue outweighs every other issue. For the fundamental reason that if words have no meaning, and a political party is determined to lie and gaslight over material reality (i.e. that sex is binary and biological men and women exist), then I can never, ever support such a crazed, illogical position.

Sure, parties spin things, they manipulate data, they screw things up. However, until the trans debate, I cannot recollect any party insisting that material reality didn't exist.

If a party wants to ban women's abortion tights then clearly I don't agree with that stance. But at least the Republicans know what a woman is.

UppityPuppity · 21/01/2021 08:30

Really? Worse than the party which wants to ban abortion? Worse than the faction which stomped all over black rights?

Wait till they ban abortion because it is discriminatory healthcare based on sex against transwomen.

Black rights - like the rights of black women be seen as human beings and not the dystopian ‘black birthing bodies’.

Every sex based right is in their sights - abortion is NOT safe with these ideologues because it serves to remind that TW are not women.

5 years ago we didn’t think we would be here. 5 years from now - this is exactly where it is going.

We have a women VP who is worked in criminal justice and is the ‘last person in the room’ when Biden makes these decisions. If such a women can’t see it/doesn’t care about women and girls - there is no hope.

highame · 21/01/2021 08:34

I will be interested to see how this plays out. My worry is that, so far, the Supreme Court has rejected appeals regarding women's and girls rights. The other issue is that the majority of the media don't want this up for discussion. However, there will come a point when the scales re-balance. Perhaps for 2 reasons that I can think of, firstly that the underlying theories are anti capitalist and secondly that fetishism and paedophilia proponents latch onto these new ideals and push their agendas quietly. This happened in the UK (think it was the 1980's) and when spotted, the back peddling was very swift.

What happens in the individual States will be very important and don't forget this will have to be very measured otherwise JB will lose more seats in Congress (they lost 5 in the elections and they only have the deciding vote in the Senate). Republicans will use this in their campaigning over the next two years, so the next round of elections will show what is really happening.

A massive divide has opened up and it is now so stark it should be worrying anyone in political life, anywhere in the west. Women need to get really organised because I have a feeling we are the only ones who will be able to right this ship (well us and all the Capitalists 😂)

turnitonagain · 21/01/2021 08:36

For me, the trans issue outweighs every other issue.

Said no black Muslim or Hispanic American ever.
