www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/01/20/executive-order-preventing-and-combating-discrimination-on-basis-of-gender-identity-or-sexual-orientation/

“Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports."

Biden just passed all the worst parts of the Equality Act by executive order (so without going through any legislation at all). It is limited in effect to agencies (I think) but those agencies include the Bureau of Prisons, Dept of Housing and Urban Development, Dept of Education, Dept of Labor etc

This will of course be unchallenged, even welcomed by the media. It will likely have a knock on effect around the world.

And I am so angry. So so angry. He was never the ‘least worst option’ he is the absolute worst option.

Does anyone have any insight on how this might go if it got to the Supreme Court with the two Justices Trump secured whilst in office?

The impression I've picked up is that the US legal system favours individual rights (for some people's rights at least). They're not as focused on weighing that up against a larger good that's favoured on this side of the Atlantic.

Another impression I have is that this links into the US legal system viewing children more as the possessions of their parents with less focus on the rights of the child, as being distinct from the parents'.

Arobase · 21/01/2021 08:37

Wait till they ban abortion because it is discriminatory healthcare based on sex against transwomen.

No, thanks, I don't have time to wait that long.

feelingquitehopeful · 21/01/2021 08:39

I am worried Biden is not really in control, and this has only made me feel more uneasy.

I'm going to say as an Iraqi born woman that Trump was absolutely worse, he didn't "own it", he was a white supremecist. Mike Pence joked about lynching gay people. Don't pretend this administration is worse. Trump wasn't doing it from a place of love and respect for women, was he?

OldFolksTalkinBoutBackinMyDay2 · 21/01/2021 08:40

@rockinaftermidnite

Oh good grief. The man hasn't even been in office 24 hours and yet already you lot are picking him apart. Give him a chance at least!

No. Not "picking him apart" at all!

Posters here have been rightly upset about Mr Biden's support for identity politics.

What do you think about IP?

nauticant · 21/01/2021 08:41

Said no black Muslim or Hispanic American ever.

If particular racial groups are entitled to prioritise their interests and what they want to campaign on, then this should also apply to other groups, for example groups of women. Or is there some reason why women have to attend to everyone else's interests first?

Gncq · 21/01/2021 08:44

Oh no I'm not a black Muslim
I can't have an opinion!

RhapsodyandAshe · 21/01/2021 08:45

@wootmoggie image didn't load.

SirGawain · 21/01/2021 08:46

Perhaps you think the well known liberaly minded Donald Trump would be better for women's rightsGrin

RhapsodyandAshe · 21/01/2021 08:48

Sorry yes it did, was there when thread reloaded.
Modern American democracy is all show boating with no substance behind it. When there is more choice of bread in a supermarket than there are political parties, how can that be considered democracy.
Also fuck Biden and Trump, they are both misogynistic arse holes.

YouSetTheTone · 21/01/2021 08:49

@nauticant well said. Let’s not ‘be kind’ all the time!!
I’m glad I live in England and not the US, Canada or Scotland at the moment.

NecessaryScene1 · 21/01/2021 08:51

Perhaps you think Donald Trump would be better

Well, it's not a total hypothetical - he was president for 5 years. What did he actually do for/against women's rights? And how does it compare to Biden so far?

Genuine question on the first - I don't follow US politics that closely, but I'm assuming Trump did very little positive or negative or I'd have heard about it. What did I miss?

(And that's my general view of Trump - all talk and ego, very little action. I fear there will be a lot more actual negatives from this presidency.)

Floisme · 21/01/2021 08:53

Or is there some reason why women have to attend to everyone else's interests first?
Thank you. I am so sick and tired of women being expected to be mum to the whole world, even on FWR.

TiredAndGrumpy85 · 21/01/2021 08:56

I couldn't have voted for Trump if I were a US citizen because of the appalling separation of immigrant children from their mothers, but I can still be seriously disappointed in Biden and Harris. I don't feel I can get excited about their victory.

We should have laws which make it illegal to discriminate against people because they don't conform to sexist masculine and feminine stereotypes. Any law that refers to the notion of "gender identity" is a bad law IMO. I am increasingly of the view that the concept of gender identity is incredibly sexist, holding womanhood to be a feeling that both male and female people can feel, rather than a significant material reality for half the population.

Helmetbymidnight · 21/01/2021 08:56

Perhaps you think the well known liberaly minded Donald Trump would be better for women's rights

Genuinely mystified by this attitude.

Donald Trump was a shit - in virtually every way. That doesn't mean we can't talk about or expect better than Biden removing women's rights on day one.

Is that really so hard to understand?

CaraDuneRedux · 21/01/2021 08:58

@babbaloushka

I'm going to say as an Iraqi born woman that Trump was absolutely worse, he didn't "own it", he was a white supremecist. Mike Pence joked about lynching gay people. Don't pretend this administration is worse. Trump wasn't doing it from a place of love and respect for women, was he?
Absolutely.

Trump was, overall, a nightmare for so many groups - women, African Americans and other ethnic minorities, the poor, immigrants, people in prison (let us not forget that in addition to pardoning his mates, he went on a killing spree, brining forward executions of people clearly without the mental capacity to understand what they'd done).

Biden's already done good things (Paris accord, WHO) - most of even this EO, guaranteeing gay and trans people's housing and employment rights, is a good thing.

But (sorry for shouting) notwithstanding all of this, I'M STILL ALLOWED TO SAY IT'S A DISASTER FOR WOMEN'S SPORT, AND WOMEN IN PRISON.

Because it is - it is the beginning of the end of women's sport other than as a quaint hobby for enthusiasts prepared to participate in the knowledge that they cannot win.

NotMeekNotObedient · 21/01/2021 08:58

Another misogynistic areshole.

SebastianTheCrab · 21/01/2021 08:59

@HumphreyCobblers

I don’t expect the trans issue to outweigh everything else. That doesn’t stop me being incredibly pissed off about what he has done to women’s rights in the first two minutes of his presidency.

Are we to never criticise anything he does just because he isn’t Donald Trump?

Exactly. This mania that you're either for Dems or against them has got to stop. It's utterly Soviet.

I too have not been looking forward to Joe taking office. I'm categorically no fan of the man but the reality is Trump had 4 years and did nothing to harm women's rights. He didn't actually roll back any abortion rights.

And if you think there aren't plenty of pro-lifers in the Dems - who are pitched further right than Labour here - you're having a laugh.

Biden will be a disaster for women.

NecessaryScene1 · 21/01/2021 08:59

It's the Mob-type mentality:

"Don't complain about what we're doing to you. Or would you rather those guys got in and took away your abortion rights? Would be a shame if that happened. So shut up and take it."

UppityPuppity · 21/01/2021 09:02

turnitonagain

For me, the trans issue outweighs every other issue.

Said no black Muslim or Hispanic American ever.

As in - because all black Muslims or Hispanic
Americans are monolith in their thoughts and not a single one believes that women should have the safety, dignity, privacy and equity of access afforded by sex based rights and the factual understanding that sex exists and impacts on all our lives?

Not one single one?

JamieLeeCurtains · 21/01/2021 09:02

Biden will regret this.

It's a harmful policy, as will be seen, after women and girls are harmed in jails, institutions and on sport's fields.

It will also hurt him politically once the stories start to emerge.

Disappointing that he did this without further research and consultation.

I just hope it's a very public backtrack in the full spotlight when it does eventually happen.

bellinisurge · 21/01/2021 09:04

You see the sexual orientation bit and you say Yay. And then you see the monstrous gender identity bit .....

Young women will be denied sports scholarship places at university because of this. That is a big deal particularly for those on low incomes. This will backfire on him.

cyclingmad · 21/01/2021 09:07

Lol got to laugh even now Trump no longer President and still people continue to talk about him.

Honestly is this how 4yrs will be, The Dems using Trump as an escape goat, I can see either bow even in a years time itll be well would you have wanted Trump!

Biden is President now, everything he does from now on is on his own merit. No more comparing.

Oh good grief. The man hasn't even been in office 24 hours and yet already you lot are picking him apart. Give him a chance at least!

He has been given a chance. And in 24hr he has signed away girls and womens Rights.

It's a funny thing, but women dont actually have to defer to any man these days. No matter his public face.

Trump had to go. Absolutely. There us not even a question of that. Biden and Harris however have shown how little they think of girls and women overall.
