www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/01/20/executive-order-preventing-and-combating-discrimination-on-basis-of-gender-identity-or-sexual-orientation/

“Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports."

Biden just passed all the worst parts of the Equality Act by executive order (so without going through any legislation at all). It is limited in effect to agencies (I think) but those agencies include the Bureau of Prisons, Dept of Housing and Urban Development, Dept of Education, Dept of Labor etc

This will of course be unchallenged, even welcomed by the media. It will likely have a knock on effect around the world.

And I am so angry. So so angry. He was never the ‘least worst option’ he is the absolute worst option.

Oh, is that another of those dissenting women? I thought no women (apart from evil witchy paranoid mners) were at all concerned by any of this fucking egregious land grab.

MaudTheInvincible · 22/01/2021 22:51

@NiceGerbil

A quote for from the guardian

'Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports,”'

This comes up over and over and over.

There is no denial of access to any of these things anywhere.

What there is, is a no to children accessing sex segregated things for the opposite sex.

No one is saying the trans girls in Connecticut can't run. They are saying they are male and so should run with the males. Change with the males shower with the males.

To frame this as being excluded entirely is a sleight of hand, a lie. A lie that seems to have been consumed wholesale by an awful lot of people who make decisions on this sort of stuff.

I agree. It also doesn't acknowledge that girls are people too, and should also have the right to learn without having to worry about access to the loos, locker room or showers.

MiladyBerserko · 22/01/2021 22:51

But not 'all women' are dissenting *Maud'.

Do Remember. Smile

@Mummyoflittledragon

This is what I said every time dh spoke of how much he was looking forward to Biden being sworn in. Don’t get me wrong, I was glad to see the back of Trump. But Biden is a privileged old white man, who doesn’t have a clue what he’s just done.
You've put it so succinctly- I completely agree.
NiceGerbil · 22/01/2021 23:13

Earlier in the thread there were comments that if/ when girls are sexually assaulted more at school as a result of this, people will wake up.

I don't think that's true

In the UK the numbers for rape and sexual assault at school are horrifyingly, surprisingly high.

It has been reported in the mainstream press multiple times.

There was no massive call to action/ outage etc.

My belief is, and I'm sorry this is depressing. That while the whole of society pretty much says rape is bad, rape of children where they're supposed to be safe is appalling, these are the most egregious crimes short of murder ..

In practice actually hardly anyone thinks that at all. Each case is seen individually. And the victim blaming kicks in really heavily.

The bottom line is that damaging ideas around all this prevail because facing up to the reality is just too grim, and facing up to the fact that ordinary nice upstanding boys and men are doing this is just too much to face up to.

It's easier to turn a blind eye. Say the general right things but then with each actual case say oh but this but that etc etc.

Society simply does not care about sex crimes against women and girls, generally. We're smaller and weaker, men have needs, what can you do? It's the way it is

So no I don't think an increase in sex offences will do anything.

And tbh it's not really about sex offences. It's about privacy and dignity. It's about how blokes can be really creepy and intimidating without stepping over the line to illegality. It's not illegal to stare. To stand too close to someone. To strike up conversation with them when you're both in a state of undress. Etc etc.

NotYourCisterinAus · 23/01/2021 00:02

As to what American women think, I had a quick lurk on Lipstick Alley. There's a long thread filled with African American outraged at this development. No doubt the libfems and TRAs will categorise them as "White Feminists".

Quaagars · 23/01/2021 00:15

Or maybe he does know what he's done, but just doesn't agree.

Quaagars · 23/01/2021 00:20

I don't think it is unreasonable to question the cognitive ability of either, Trump or Biden, given they are both pensioners and one is pushing eighty. There is a natural physical and mental decline as we grow older, that is well documented. It is inconceivable to me that ANY President of the USA would do this. Inconceivable. So we absolutely must question capacity

OK, putting aside your argument that once you hit your seventies you've got a mental and physical decline and we must question mental capacity as a result....
Why is it inconceivable that any President of the US would be pro trans rights /pro LGBT?

NotBadConsidering · 23/01/2021 00:41

There are two possibilities:

Either Biden knows exactly what he’s doing, and that makes him a massive misogynist, regardless of whether he’s pro-trans.

Or he doesn’t realise the implications of what he’s doing which makes him incompetent.

Neither is a good look in the first week of a presidency.

dyslek · 23/01/2021 01:25

You forgot the third possibility. He just does not give a fuck.

Irronically he not give a fuck about women or gender confused people.

Short term political expediency. Pleasing his left constituency without compromising the interests of his backers.

NiceGerbil · 23/01/2021 03:52

I go with the last option as well.

Just doesn't give a fuck

Loads of stuff that societies should care about as a whole are shunted off to 'women's' stuff and therefore a problem for women to sort and men can happily not worry.

These include things like rape, CSA, child poverty etc etc

In this case. Men want something. That's pretty important. If there are potential problems. Well that sounds like a women's issue? Pretty niche, not that important

I think the extent that men do 'bros before ho's' is underestimated.

Also the extent that they are still fundamentally discomfited by men who don't act like 'men'.

So men want want something. That's important.

What are the upsides? Men who aren't 'real men' aren't in their bogs gyms etc making them feel uncomfortable. Masculinity is preserved.

Where do they go? In with the girls! They're not proper men.

I hate to say it. And again I say say I am namalt etc.
But toxic masculinity is a thing.

And really an awful lot of men in the UK honestly don't see women as full people. Like they see men. I can count on the fingers of one hand the men I've met in my whole life who saw me as a person first.

In the end for lots of men, women are other. Constructed of stereotypes. Etc. Men and non men.

We're not really whole people. So, of course if a man says he is one then that's ok. In the end we're just tits arse cunt and go invisible after 40 or so.

This whole thing just shows 100% that men see us as not. People in our own right. But as a costume

It's so depressing.

I've always got on better with men than women (not trying to be a cool girl) but fucking hell I choose my friends of both sexes so carefully.

Women, mothers, sisters this is what we needed. An outstanding piece written in the Times today by Janice Turner, covering just about every facet of our thread and our horror.

This is very much hitting the mainstream now as hoped. Telegraph will follow suit.

I agree. I think part of the problem is that for a lot of men, rape is not really a serious crime. They don't see it as having a profound effect on someone's life. After all, sex is good, a bit of sex that someone didn't want is probably not so bad.

feelingquitehopeful · 23/01/2021 07:14

I am certainly not giving up! We make up 50% of the population. We need to toughen up now, not lament 'its the way it is'

Honestly!

It certainly does not have to be this way!

Well, if any American feminists are reading, I recommend checking out the latest Graham Linehan interview on YouTube with Derrick Jensen and Lierre Keith.

It looks as though the Women's Liberation Front (Wolf) could do with more members. Its website is www.womensliberationfront.org/

@TiredAndGrumpy85

Yes I admit I'm not well versed in US lawmaking but I've never understood why the Democrats haven't tried harder to place abortion rights on a more secure footing when they've been in power. Call me cynical but it seems quite convenient to be able to hold it as a threat over women every 4 years.

The only way to make it secure would be via constitutional amendment. Amendments are rare and overwhelming support is required if you look at the processes. It has never been a realistic option.

Yes this. It’s very difficult. It’s much easier legally to chip away at rights on the basis of this, and this now this too etc than it is to create them. It would be a leviathan battle and while it would be amazing I can see why it’s not been the hill the entire party would die on- youve seen from the last few years how impossible it is to get any kind of partisan style legislation through when you don’t hold majorities in both houses. And when you do it’s a very short window to enact your absolutely top priority before the country decides everything is your fault and votes your majority away.

I can’t get on board with Biden is worse than trump for women, it’s a very alienating opinion. Parts of this latest order are very regrettable, and parts were very useful and he would have signed them in good faith, not as part of his Machiavellian plan to abolish the rights of women. If people were explaining the impact he would listen, but I doubt they are. And while he’s trying to get a lot done, this new administration does need to focus on the fact it’s house is on fire, and half the country doesn’t believe in a fire department.
