Biden has completely obliterated woman’s sex based protections as he said he would do.

“Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports."

Biden just passed all the worst parts of the Equality Act by executive order (so without going through any legislation at all). It is limited in effect to agencies (I think) but those agencies include the Bureau of Prisons, Dept of Housing and Urban Development, Dept of Education, Dept of Labor etc

This will of course be unchallenged, even welcomed by the media. It will likely have a knock on effect around the world.

And I am so angry. So so angry. He was never the ‘least worst option’ he is the absolute worst option.

Many of us have questioned his ability to lead the country at such an advanced age

Again with his age.
He's only 4 years older than Trump. Did people go on about his age all the time? No.
From some of the posts on here, you'd be thinking he was a doddery, can't spit words out type of person who doesn't know what he's doing, but on watching the inauguration speech he didn't sound anything of the sort - sounded assured, decisive and not like someone losing his marbles like you and others seem to want to portray him as.

I do not say this lightly, but from day one I have always wondered why Biden has not been able to speak freely, why his wife has been by his side so much prompting him along,

Confused He has a wife who is there with him and supportive. That's being twisted as a bad thing, why? I swear, it's getting more and more conspiracy theory and far right on here by the day.
HecatesCats · 22/01/2021 20:08

Oh give over

cyclingmad · 22/01/2021 20:12

Bidens campaign polices on medicare for all and for $15 wage were actually Bernie Sanders policies he has been championing for a very long time.

Not that Biden will ever admit it.

Then again what to expect the news is reporting that within a day of Biden being in, he has now ramped up vaccinations to 1million a day. He refused to acknowledge that it was already at 800k in the weeks before his inauguration.

Taking credit for stuff he hasn't actually done. Then again why would he credit trump at all, doesn't fit the narrative of trump is bad and I'm your saviour. Hmm

zzizzer · 22/01/2021 20:21

People went on about Trump's age all the time. They thought/think he has dementia.

Yes. This.

Floisme · 22/01/2021 20:24

Yes please give over with the ageist twaddle. Kamala Harris is 56 and just as delusional about biology as Biden.
I know you'll all be shocked to know the Guardian is thrilled

www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/jan/22/transgender-athletes-joe-biden-executive-order
The order contains necessary protections for transpeople, like jobs and housing, that everyone would support. Why then is that failing rag trumpeting the part of order that is directly damaging to girls and women?

Do you know what, men need to learn they don't have the authority to decide what happens with women's spaces, sports, anything. They don't own us and don't get to hand out and take away sweeties at their whim. Why are we letting them think they do?

Good to see a major American news outlet covering this and pulling no punches.

Interesting point. It reminds me of this article by Lachlan Stuart about his work on the 2019 Labour manifesto, which lots of TRAs made a fuss about because along with lots of actually straightforwardly trans-beneficial policies it included the bit about preserving sex-based exemptions.

It dismayed the pop up people and LGBT Labour because it was the removal of the established legal rights of women that interested them.

Nowhere, ever, have I seen any recognition from any of them of the astonishingly bold, tangible and very expensive commitment that we gave to improve the lives of trans people by ensuring adequate and much improved access to health care services.

It’s not because they didn’t know.

It’s because that’s not what they’re interested in.

And I’m the transphobe?

Aye, right.

NotBadConsidering · 22/01/2021 21:09

Well, the Guardian article puts to bed the idea that TRAs aren’t seeing this as a win when it comes to sport. Plenty of claims on Shrier’s Twitter feed, and from some of our posters here that the executive order doesn’t actually mean anything in relation to sport. Better tell the Guardian that Quaagars and jj!

Quaagars · 22/01/2021 21:10

That's not what's implied though as you probably know - his age is brought up all the time as a stick to say he's losing it, doesn't know what he's saying, in a way that others don't get.
Nothing to do with what he and Kamala say on trans issues.

7Days · 22/01/2021 21:34

Trump got all that shit as well though. remember the column inches dedicated to the way he drank a glass of water, or walked up some steps?

The problem is, whatever norm you break orweapon you play, it will eventually be turned against you.

MiladyBerserko · 22/01/2021 21:43

Thanks for that link necessary

This bit is brutal:
'The whole unnecessary fuss — and the subsequent unhelpful media narrative — arose from their utter discontent that the Labour Party had committed to continuing the legal entitlements of women (and men), as defined by the protected characteristic of sex, to be allowed service provisions on the basis of their sex when — and only when — it was a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim to define access to such services on the basis of sex and not on the basis of a differently defined ‘gender’.

This may well not be the policy of LGBT Labour but it is long standing Labour Party policy. It was not changed when we introduced the Gender Recognition Act in 2004 and it was explicitly underscored by the Equality Act in 2010. It has never been changed by decision of our Conference, or by a decision of the Courts, or by a statement from any Party Leader, or by the wording of any election manifesto, or by any policy announcement. It wasn’t even considered controversial until after the 2016 report of the Westminster Parliament’s Women and Equalities Select Committee, which itself did not accept the recommendations along similar lines submitted in the evidence provided by trans rights lobbyists including Stonewall.

But it dismayed trans people, according to Heather’s account and the actions of pop-up people like Ellie-Mae and her ilk. It dismayed the pop up people and LGBT Labour because it was the removal of the established legal rights of women that interested them.'

MaudTheInvincible · 22/01/2021 21:48

because it was the removal of the established legal rights of women that interested them

Brutally stark isn't it, that sentence?

MiladyBerserko · 22/01/2021 22:03

I think cognitive ability / not suffering age related impairment is a reasonable expectation to have of a world leader.

Maybe if the US would stop voting in old men who show signs of impairment, the questions wouldn't be required.

feelingquitehopeful · 22/01/2021 22:08

I don't think it is unreasonable to question the cognitive ability of either, Trump or Biden, given they are both pensioners and one is pushing eighty. There is a natural physical and mental decline as we grow older, that is well documented.

It is inconceivable to me that ANY President of the USA would do this. Inconceivable. So we absolutely must question capacity.

For the record, I am a natural Democrat supporter; no one could be happier than me to see the back of Trump. But we must be truthful. This is not the healing landscape we were promised, this is not the equality we were led to believe was possible under a Biden administration. It is not really surprising that people, particularly women, but everyone that cares about women and girls will feel cheated and lied to.

Harris will not be the first or the last career politician that chooses to look the other way in order to secure the next foothold. Right now her silence is deafening.

It is okay, we are all paying attention now - pretty much every woman in the west is paying attention now, so we get serious about this. We have clearly been too nice for too long.

DickKerrLadies · 22/01/2021 22:23

@AbsintheFriends

Slight sports derail here, but the year 1921 stuck in my mind so I looked it up and yes - it's 100 years since women's football teams in the UK were officially banned by the FA from playing in Association grounds. Largely because women's football had got too popular during WW1 when the men were away, and when they came back they didn't want to share their facilities or their supporters. So women formed the English Ladies' Football Association and played on rugby grounds, but it took 50 years until the ban was lifted in 1971.

Another 50 years on and men have found a new way of making women move over or bow out of sports.

It's an interesting side note that one of the supporting arguments for banning it was put forward by doctors, who said it was too dangerous for women. How ironic that, 100 years later the narrative has switched to it not being remotely dangerous at all for women to play against bigger, heavier, more solidly-muscled male bodies?

Link here. www.historyextra.com/period/first-world-war/1921-when-football-association-banned-women-soccer-dick-kerr-ladies-lily-parr/

Another interesting side note from the linked article is that "without the restrictions imposed in England, the United States emerged as the benchmark for women’s football during the second half of the 20th century. The US team has since won three World Cups and four Olympic gold medals; England have no major honours in the women’s game."

I'm sure America's supremacy in the game is only going to increase from here on in.

This is what gets me though - you don't "speak" for all women though.
There's clearly a lot of women out there who don't have a problem with them standing up for trans rights, and LGBT rights, otherwise they wouldn't have got elected.
I'm one of them (not in the US, but you mention women in the West so that'll be me then.)
I am paying attention.
I have been reading.

OvaHere · 22/01/2021 22:42

Does anyone remember Miriam Ben -Shalom? She was one of the earliest American voices in this debate speaking I think about lesbian women and Michfest.

She's currently digging for women's sport protections in the proposed Equality Act. I won't link to the site as it's not allowed but this is what she has to say.

We are a group of Wisconsin women who are fed up with males being counted as females in women's sports.

We are concerned that the passage of the federal Equality Act as written, will be a disaster for women and put an end to Title IX protections. There will be no more sports teams and events for women only.

The funds we are raising will be used to pay the ad companies we are working with for both a billboard, pictured here and a TV ad campaign on local channel 27 WKOW . The TV ad will run for two weeks and we will own it once it is produced so we can share it with others and on social media.

The Biden administration has promised to pass the Equality Act as soon as they can and has already issued an executive order that replaces the category of "sex" with that of "gender identity", giving any man permission to claim a female "gender identity" and be counted as a woman.

NiceGerbil · 22/01/2021 22:43

A quote for from the guardian

'Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports,”'

This comes up over and over and over.

There is no denial of access to any of these things anywhere.

What there is, is a no to children accessing sex segregated things for the opposite sex.

No one is saying the trans girls in Connecticut can't run. They are saying they are male and so should run with the males. Change with the males shower with the males.

To frame this as being excluded entirely is a sleight of hand, a lie. A lie that seems to have been consumed wholesale by an awful lot of people who make decisions on this sort of stuff.
