This one’s popped onto my radar a few times over the past couple of weeks .. thought it was worth sharing as there is a lot to unpack. Apologies if it’s already been shared .. I checked back but couldn’t see anything.

I know this is an old thread, but having my own negative experiences with this person has led me here. I think some of the main questions that should be asked are: what experience do they have of managing and managing charities specifically? What experience do they have of the VAWG sector? What qualifications do they have? Because I believe they are actually inexperienced for the role which begs the question why were they hired? When MW did “counselling” with me, she had no qualifications for this. And not only that, but she was poor at it anyway, she regularly yawned and looked at her phone. She is not a professional person. She has a huge following and support base but when you scratch the surface there is little substance to her knowledge or experience. How she got a job as a manager when she has never been a manager is bizarre.

Women accessing support services following male violence, abuse and/or rape deserve so much better. I do hope that you were able to access appropriate professional counselling elsewhere.

IDontOnlyLikeJazzFunk · 01/04/2021 10:41

Flowers for you having to go through that Sunflowergirl - that is awful on both counts.

It is a complete mystery why MW got that job at all. They lied about a key qualifier for the position (being female), they should have been sacked straightaway.

When I heard about this quite a while ago (before I knew quite so much about this whole thing) I wondered if MW had kept their job because they had a particular affinity for it and some amazing personal quality that the staff and service users looked at and valued highly.

Then I saw MW on twitter and the utter abuse they give to women that don't fully capitulate to MWs every demand and also the tweet where MW showed a picture of an Indian God of War holding a bloody decapitated head and made some reference to T**fs and I realised that actually MW is not remotely suitable for this job and it is just absolutely shocking that they are in such a position of power.

The Scottish Govt seems to call on MW/Rape Crisis Scotland when they want an attack dog, with MW even wading in on issues totally unrelated to their role. MW seems disproportionately drawn to women's roles and positions of influence and has failed to get elected in several attempts (as far as I can remember).

I am so sorry that you have come into contact with this individual at a time when you needed help and support but they treated you with such cruelty and disrespect.

The other people involved in Rape Crisis Scotland need to have a good long look at themselves and ask if they are doing the right thing because I think emphatically they are not.

ArabellaScott · 01/04/2021 10:43

Sunflower, I'm so sorry to hear you've had a bad experience. Hoping you've found better support since then Flowers.

I wonder if Women's Aid might be able to help?

RapeCrisis is government funded and should be a high quality service ,and accountable.

When you work with a counsellor who is right for you, you should feel understood and supported... - Rape Crisis England and Wales - who work to National Service Standards.

I can't find any info on Rape Crisis Scotland, though. Their website is a bit light on info and there's nothing under 'complaints', I couldn't find anything on who funds, regulates or oversees them.

There does seem to be a theme that people who are trans id land up advising on issues which they have no insight into.

James Morton did a heap of advising on trans prisoners, and yet, James appears to have no expertise of the justice system or crime at all.

These people all know each other, it is as if they are given roles because of their trans status and not because of their capabilities.

I hope you are doing ok, Sunflower. Would you have the energy to complain about your experience with MW? You raise some valid points.

NecessaryScene1 · 01/04/2021 11:07

It is a bit like the stereotypical image of the Freemasons isn't it?

But happening in plain sight - not funny handshakes and rolled-up trouser legs.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 01/04/2021 11:19

It is striking, Necessary. There is a small group of people who all work in parallel, having significant influence, despite having absolutely no qualifications or insight to the area - other than being trans.

Professional trans people are a thing. And, I am not convinced that is enough to do, e.g. counselling of traumatised women.

This person is a TRA first and foremost, I believe they are acting strategically. I've never seen any evidence that they particularly like women let alone care about our oppression.

Sorry you had such inappropriate counselling Sunflowergirl03 Thanks

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/04/2021 11:34

Sorry bold fail with my two quoted paragraphs

PotholeHellhole · 01/04/2021 11:51

Sunflowergirl03 Please do not worry about bumping an old thread.

I'm sorry the sessions were so unsatisfactory. I had myself wondered if perhaps as JazzFunk describes, MW was unusually suited to these roles.

During the #SixWords campaign, I noticed various independent crisis centres in Scotland that were not affilated with Rape Crisis Scotland and took pains to emphasise that they supported the right of women to request a same sex doctor. One of those organisations might be more helpful to you now.

Thecatonthemat · 02/04/2021 15:56

Yes Sunflowergirl3 in normal times one would hope that you and others who were treated inappropriately by this person would feel able to complain. That have already lied to get their posts, and not dealing empathetically or professionally with you must surely raise questions about their role. ( I thought they had been appointed as manager...counselling rape survivors seems a far stretch.))Is there no one in the organisation also seeing the problem? This person should be sacked .

AnnieBarbour · 03/05/2021 20:07

Just happened again! This person has been appointed to another post with a specific EA disqualification.

Rhannion · 03/05/2021 22:25

I know, it’s fucking outrageous

HeirloomTomato · 03/05/2021 22:52

Great news! Inclusion of diverse genders is important so that all feel welcome to use the Centre's services, regardless of how they identify. I look forward to seeing a transman appointed as head of a group that supports gay men who have suffered rape or sexual trauma... or as head of a prostate cancer research group...

... except that will never happen because we all know it's only women's spaces and support groups that are fair game for appropriation.
