Stonewall drop Mermaids?

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 12/08/2020 15:46

Seems Stonewall used to direct young people to Mermaids. But the link has been removed from the page?:

www.stonewall.org.uk/help-advice/coming-out/coming-out-young-person

And the page that used to be on there appears to be blank:

www.stonewall.org.uk/organisations/mermaids

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark, y'all.

@SerenityNowwwww

I suppose a lot of schools were ‘advised’ by them too. Plus that Pudsy Bear charity thing...
There was also a link with a Scout leader - will need to dig it out.

While I'm here I'm going to have a little rant about the charity sector in general.

I've worked for 3 charities and encountered the same problems over and over again:

  • inept Trustees with insufficient (or in many cases no) professional experience of the sector they are there to provide oversight of; very often too many stakeholders on the board and not enough experts.

e.g. it's laudable to have parents of children with disabilities on the board of a disability charity but if you only have those people and nobody with a background and real expertise in child safeguarding (for instance) then you will likely create an organisation with a very weak safeguarding culture.

  • lack of oversight of the charity sector in general. It is basically an unregulated sector in terms of operational delivery.

The charity commission simply do not have the resources or expertise to understand the myriad different services being delivered and exist fundamentally to check for embezzlement.

I reported the organisation I used to work for to the charity sector as they were fundamentally failing to adhere to safeguarding legislation to keep vulnerable beneficiaries safe and were also failing in their duty of care to staff in providing a safe workplace. The Charity commission never even responded to me (I was paid off on in the end as the organisation bullied my for whistleblowing and I started the tribunal process).

  • a tendency to believe that philanthropy is all that's needed; a good heart and good intentions and sod running a professional workplace. The road to hell is paved with good intentions and often well meaning, underpaid staff who are badly trained or not trained at all and not sufficiently supervised by the poorly experienced and trained people above them can create a perfect storm.

I don't think many people really understand their services many services delivered by the third sector working with vulnerable people are really not inspected at all in the way that ofsted inspects schools or the Cqc inspects care provision.

This was exactly the issue with kids company and I'd be unsurprised if mermaids is the same.

houseofcardsdown · 12/08/2020 18:37

Sorry for typos.

Tl:dr

Core services for vulnerable that have been outsourced to the third sector as part of 'big society' are unregulated, often delivered by underpaid, untrained staff overseen by inexperienced, equally untrained trustees.

SerenityNowwwww · 12/08/2020 18:41

Twitter says stonewall have completely dropped all references and the charity have done the same for stonewall. Somethings definitely up.

SerenityNowwwww · 12/08/2020 18:45

Twitter now says that Starbucks has removed them from their site (but not social media). Biscuitgate.

This!

But also governments thinking "great they can do it all for us! For free!" and then don't look a "gift horse" in the mouth.

Totickleamockingbird · 12/08/2020 18:56

Can anyone please explain what they think is happening in this drama? So Mermaid is suddenly being dropped by loads of people. What happened? How did this come about? A quick google returns just vague news like the law article review news. I don’t understand. Can anyone please explain?

SerenityNowwwww · 12/08/2020 18:57

Did it start with the BBC or NHS? Maybe it’s just the house of cards effect.

Kids company trustees:

Sunetra atkinson/sastry: Worked as a BBC make up artist

Erica Bolton: founding director of an international PR agency specialising in arts and culture

Jane Tyler: former partner at a law firm

Richard handover: former boss of WH Smith

Vince o brien: former chair of British venture capitalist association

Andrew Webster: former HR executive of a pharmaceutical company

Alan yentob: former British television executive.

I can't see a single name on that list who would have an in depth working knowledge of youth services, children's safeguarding, therapeutic provision or anything else that kids company were delivering.

Camilla Batmangheilidjh was of course responsible for operational delivery but who was overseeing her? A board with no understanding or expertise of the sector. How could they possibly oversee what she was delivering without understanding the sector?

this shitshow is not the work of any one body. The blame is shared out. Together, they have contrived a collective madness that has co-opted the police, the legal system, and the media, as well as the NHS, schools, prisons, etc.

They all should be held to account. This all needs dismantled.

Nobody knows. All we know is a few prominent people and organisations have dropped Mermaids all of a sudden.

It could be a massive coincidence. But given the dodginess of Mermaid's general way of operating, it wouldn't be at all surprising if the shit was about to hit the fan!

Or it could just be that there are court cases coming up to do with childhood transition and the legal teams are looking more closely at this. Seeing that the BBC and NHS no longer link (is that correct?) may cause a chain reaction.

Whatever the cause, we know what a shitshow Mermaids is and it wouldn't hurt to archive associations with the charity now so we have evidence of how widespread their support is, without organisations doing due diligence.

I work in the charity sector too houseofcards & I know what you’re saying. Did you see the survey civil society did with trustees? 97% said they were confident of spotting & stopping wrong doing in their own charity. Cue hysterical laughter.... It’s terrifying how wrong so many of them are!

The charity commission is primarily responsible for ensuring charities comply with charity law

If a charity is providing a regulated service it should be monitored by the same regulator as the private sector so any personal care service should be monitored by the CQC

Education services by ofstead

Any contract awarded by a local authority should require compliance with local authority safeguarding procedures

I think The problem is really in the provision of things like information & advice, support groups & befriending. None of those are regulated. None of those are inspected. Funders will ask in great detail how you do things but they don’t check, as long as you have a policy they won’t look any further

It’s No one job to objectively check if Mermaids information, advice & support is accurate, fair, provided without prejudice & of a high quality. Any evaluation will be paid for by mermaids themselves so not objective

It’s a huge gap in monitoring & regulation

houseofcardsdown · 12/08/2020 19:18

Kit19 I agree wholeheartedly!!

Place I whistleblew at was a befriending charity. No personal care involved so not inspected but in reality trustees seemed to think it was fine if a volunteer went into a toilet cubicle to help a beneficiary out ShockI could not get the trustees to understand why that wasn't ok, nor why we really genuinely did need to have an accident book to record incidents in. They thought that safeguarding was 'nanny state gone mad' despite being involved with extremely vulnerable people.

See also: counselling charities. Unregulated, peeps! I worked for a youth counselling charity that had a safer recruitment policy it didn't bother to follow. No identity or reference checks, before sending people off to spend an hour alone with very vulnerable children.

It's the cracks that are the problem and there are SO many.

I haven't had a chance to check if the link is still live on these - the date is when my link checker gizmo last saw the link, so it gives an idea of which may be out of date (but not totally reliable, it might still be there)

Residentials, forums and emails are not transparent in any way shape or form.

They can have dbs checked young volunteers as part of the policy; there's no dbs that can record the kind of emotional manipulation that detransed people describe when they become part of the trans cult, in real life or online.

I still see links and references to Mermaids on the Stonewall site too but it's a useful reminder to archive everything now, not that I think they could deny it really but it doesn't hurt.

I have access to some wayback machine Stonewall links and some stuff on Blockers in general.

needaMNnamegenerator · 12/08/2020 19:32

I can only find one link to Mermaids from a police force, I'm surprised!

Ask NED - How can we help? | Devon and Cornwall Police www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/contact/ask-ned/contact/5e50e907-9a29-e711-a365-00505601867d

Has anyone else seen others?

OhHolyJesus · 12/08/2020 19:33

All those links needaMNname - amazing work!

needaMNnamegenerator · 12/08/2020 19:49

Thanks OhHolyJesus - it's the power of technology! It's from a backlink checker. I have a list of 5000 websites that link to Mermaids (the limit of my free trial - there would be a lot more if I paid for it).

If you can think of how to search it, I can look up sectors. I could do the same for anyone else (Stonewall?)

So far I've searched on .ac.uk, .sch and police.
