Has anyone seen William Shatner's twitter? He is arguing against the use of cis and how it is an insult. He seems to be doing quite well too.

DickKerr you are really mixed up. Cis is nothing to do with gender.

How'd you work that one out, exactly?

EweSurname · 05/08/2020 08:40

Does anyone know what this means? I’ve read it a few times but can’t work out his point

Eh? What do you think it is then?

(Apart, obviously, being a prefix commonly used by chemists to distinguish between isomers)

Cis is nothing to do with gender.

Are you deliberately hilarious?

AnyOldPrion · 05/08/2020 08:47

I’m happy about William Shatner. Loved Star Trek when I was younger.

Like BubonicPlague, I had no objection to cis when I first encountered it. Indeed my main problem with cis relates entirely to the current claim that men are literally women and that on that basis, women oppress men and those men are really ‘the most oppressed women evah’.

Cis is one of the tools currently being used by men to claim their needs are greater than women’s, and thus women’s rights must prioritize men.

It means that the twitter algorithms detected 'Uncle Tom' as being a slur and that a human upheld this even though it was being quoted as part of a song, presumably with no intended allusion to the 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' meaning.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/08/2020 08:48

That the user wasn't referring to Uncle Tom in the US racist sense, but "Uncle Tom Cobley and all" as a synonym for lots of people.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/UncleTomm_Cobley

But Twitter's algorithm thought he was calling James O'Brien an "Uncle Tom" (even though he is white) and he was suspended.

@ItsLateHumpty

I’m loving Shattners’ twitter fire, he is not happy with cis Star

This is disappointing as hell. Trans and cis are just descriptors, not categories of people. It’s on you if you think cis is a term of harassment 🤷🏻‍♂️

William Shatner @WilliamShatner
Why would you use “descriptors” like those in tweets towards others if it isn’t negative & exclusionary? Those are terms you certainly can use to self describe yourself & put in your bio, Calling someone a CIS man or CIS woman in a tweet means you’re trying to segregate them.

Never would have thought you would be like this towards people who are different, didn't think all those years of teaching us how to accept aliens and life forms as part of the universe would come to not accepting people of our own species. What a let down

William Shatner @WilliamShatner
What a complete let down that people use that term mostly to harass I object to the labeling of others by the woke or whatever higher plain of thought you think you are a member of. You are getting upset at me for nonlabeling & demanding I label people? 🙄 Fine you are craycray 🤷🏼‍♂️

Shatner really nailed the problem of people designating others as 'Cis' (and expecting others to do likewise) in these two tweets, didn't he?

Great! We can stop having this endless conversation then.

There's a few people on twitter who may need this explaining to them as well, as they seem quite insistent that cis is all about gender.

merrymouse · 05/08/2020 09:07

Never would have thought you would be like this towards people who are different, didn't think all those years of teaching us how to accept aliens and life forms as part of the universe would come to not accepting people of our own species.

This person confuses 'accepting people' and 'subscribing to a belief system.'

My lack of belief in God does not imply that I do not 'accept' the existence of the Archbishop of Canterbury as a human and UK citizen who should be protected by all relevant human rights legislation.

As far as I know the Archbishop of Canterbury does not regard my lack of belief in God as a threat to his existence as a person (although he may regard it is a problem for the C of E).

Helmetbymidnight · 05/08/2020 09:08

maybe Martysouth can explain to self-identifying Cis-woman Littlemeadow123 that shes really mixed up too?

What is wrong with saying cis and trans to describe whether or not you identify with the gender you were born with

EweSurname · 05/08/2020 09:18

Thanks! I wasn’t sure what mike hind meant about “you don’t risk suspension only for asserting the biological basis of sex on twitter” as plenty have been so couldn’t work out whether he was being sincere or ironic!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 05/08/2020 09:20
@Rufusthesniggeringreindeer

I've already said that you shouldn't force labels onto people. But at the same time, you shouldn't tell people not to identify as cis if they want to. I am cis. I've had people on here tell me not to call myself that, which is quite frankly, a fine example of pot and kettle. They are telling me how I should identify myself.
I understand that you have a problem with people telling you what to call yourself and that you don’t have an issue with other people refusing the label

Im only on page 2 so something may have changed as i read so i apologise if it has

But I don’t think anyone here SO FAR has told you that you can’t call yourself cis

Bloomburger · 05/08/2020 09:26

Littlemeadow are you not bothered at all that you are now relegated to a subset by a group of people who are not actually women claiming that label?

Babdoc · 05/08/2020 09:29

Calling a woman cisgender is an insult. It means she accepts the vile gender stereotypes associated with being female in a patriarchal society- that she is comfortable with being oppressed, underpaid, sexually assaulted, regarded as hysterical, emotional, weak and empty headed, interested only in fashion and make up. That she should only aspire to children and housework, and defer to males.
Gender is a totally artificial social construct, unlike sex which is fixed at conception and unchangeable for life.
No feminist woman would ever accept a cis label - we reject the entire concept of gender roles. We are women purely because of our XX chromosomes, and we have nothing else in common with each other except our biology and oppression.
Our personalities, characteristics and skills are completely diverse, and include everything that gender stereotyping would consider male.
This is why using the cis word is offensive.

Dragonglass · 05/08/2020 09:30

Well this kicked off a bit after I went to bed.
Personally I have a few problems with the use of cis.
It is completely pointless and a waste of 3 letters. I am a woman, that is it. If I needed describing to someone then white, short woman would be more useful.
It also assumes that my sex and 'gender identity' match up. What does this mean? That I like to bake and wear lipstick? As I don't agree with gender identity then how can that be. My sex is female, end of story.

Finally as Shatner says in 1 of his tweets, it is often used in a negative and exclusionary way. It is derogatory and insulting. Maybe it's just my perception but it is almost sneery.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 05/08/2020 09:33

Oh good

I rarely post without reading further but it does happen...but its very pleasant for my post to still be relevant

I liked star trek and still have a fondness for william shatner et al (the tribbles being my favourite...i even used to have a tribble)

Shatner is a character, did anyone see the show where he went traveling with henry winkler oh and another very funny guy whose name escapes me...great show

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 05/08/2020 09:35

Maybe it's just my perception but it is almost sneery

It can be very dismissive

Babdoc · 05/08/2020 09:39

nauticant, thanks for the twitter link! I’ve now read it. I think Shatner is more annoyed at being accused of white straight male privilege than making a stand to defend women, but for a Canadian to express any anti woke heresy is wonderful!
And yes, he may be mindful of his daughters future, but as he’s 89 now (yes, I know!) I think it would be granddaughters or even great granddaughters he’d be worried about!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/08/2020 09:39

Maybe it's just my perception but it is almost sneery.

It's not just you.

Helmetbymidnight · 05/08/2020 09:41

very dismissive.

cis-privilege - the idea that women have it way easier than men who identify as women.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/08/2020 09:41

Sounds sincere to me, as he's picked such a revealing example of how Twitter moderation works.
